Linq to SQL Web Service cannot be serialized problem

Posted By: Posted Date: September 12, 2010 Points: 0 Category :ASP.Net

Hello All, Ok so I'm playing around with Web Services using Linq to SQl. I apparently have a lot of learning to do. What I'm trying to do below is pull data from the Northwind db Employee Table. I don't need to see the whole table, I'm just trying to select individual(s) but I keep getting the following error "System.Data.Linq.Binary cannot be serialized because it does not have a parameterless constructor" Code Below: Thanks in advance for any advice <WebMethod()> _ Public Function EmployeeInfo() As List(Of Employee) Dim db As New NorthwindDataContext() Dim output = From cust In db.Employees _ Select cust.EmployeeID, cust.FirstName, cust.LastName Return output End Function

Problem to obtain client IP on web service

Friends,

I'm having problems to obtain the client IP on web service. Here's my scenario:

One server with Windows 2003, hosting the web service using .Net Framework 2.0, with IP 10.0.2.50 and host name ServerTransaction.
Other server with Windows 2003, hosting a web application using .Net Framework 2.0, that consuming the web service on ServerTransaction, with IP 10.0.2.51 and host name ServerApplication.
Many other computers on the local network (IPs: 10.0.2.80, 10.0.2.81, 10.0.2.82, ...) acessing the web application on ServerApplication.

On the code of the web service I've tried to use HttpContext.Current.Request.UserHostAddress or HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR") or HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FORR"), but always I can only get the IP of ServerApplication (10.0.2.51).

Any idea or tip?

Thanks and sorry for my bad english.

problem compiling web service

Using Visual Studio 2010.

I created a webservice GetDemographicData asmx, GetDemographicData asmx.cs and then used wsdl to create a proxy, then used csc.exe to create dll.

first time when I generate proxy, it looks and works fine, but when I make some changes to my webservice and regenerate proxy the following problems occur:

1.I lost the function: public DataSet Get_GetDemographicData(string CaseNum, int Version)
2. The namespace changed to my-labs

Why?? Please see my code below:

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

LINQ query with multiple joins, problem

I am using a LINQ query with multiple joins, the last join does not return any values even though values exist in the database. Below is my code.

when the query returns suiteNameTrg and SuiteTypeTrg are empty, all other values are returned correctly.

string suiteNameTrg = string.Empty;
            string suiteTypeTrg = string.Empty;
            using (DataClassesDataContext db = new DataClassesDataContext())
            {
                    var productQuery = from assets in db.ASSETs
                    join relocatableUnits in db.RELOCATABLE_UNITs on assets.RUID equals relocatableUnits.RUID into assets_units
                    from relocatableUnits in assets_units.DefaultIfEmpty()
                   join build in db.BUILDINGs on assets.BUILDING_ID equals build.BUILDING_ID into assets_bins
                   from build in assets_bins.DefaultIfEmpty()
                   join test in db.TEST_SUITEs on assets.TEST_SUITE_ID equals test.TEST_SUITE_ID into test_bins

Problem with passing an Image as binary through web service

All

I have a web service that is accessed by a windows forms application and receives updates like facility name, address, image etc. Everything works fine except the image data is not being passed to the windows app. I am saving the images in database on both sides, so when I pull it from the server I use the following code

if (!reader.IsDBNull(floorPlanOrdinal))

facility.FloorPlan = (byte[])reader["FloorPlan"];

I can see the facility.FloorPlan Dimentions as 103840 when I debug this method which means that the data is pulled from the database fine.

On the forms side though the dimentions become 0, all other values pass fine except this. Here is the facility property in the web service on server side.

Serializing Linq to Entities for use in a REST Service

What would be the best approach to send data retrieved from Linq to Entities over a rest service? For example, if you have a Linq to Entities class, say Products from the Northwind database. I want to return a subset of the Products (based on a query on the model) back through a service. First a retrieve a List<Product> from the context, and then i need to serialize the data and send it over the wire. If I use the exact Linq to Entities class, then there is so much "garbage" that it either fails outright (from a circular reference) or you are wasting bandwith. What is a design to overcome this? Create POCO objects for each linq to entities class you want to send and create custom code to tranform each object in the list to the POCO object? This is the only way I can see doing it, although it would be very tedius to create and maintain (unless some custom code generation was created). Is there a better approach? clients

Problem updating records with LINQ, Concurrency?

My project includes a grid view with some updtable fields, some fields throw an error on update and some do not and it does not really make sense. WORK_STATION_ID does not cause an error, ROOM _ID cause an error, both are int? (I am using c#) and for update I use the code liste below.using (DataClassesDataContext db = new DataClassesDataContext()) { var product = (from p in db.ASSETs where p.ASSET_ID == ASSET_ID select p).Single(); product.WORK_STATION_ID=WORK_STATION_ID; product.ROOM_ID=ROOM_ID; db.SubmitChanges(); } Row not found or changed. Problem Integration SQL Reporting Service 2005 and SharePoint 2007

Hello, I'm trying to make our SQL Reports available on our SharePoint report center. I have SQL 2005 (sp3) report server that resides on a different server than our SharePoint 2007 server. So in our SRS Configuration Tool, we changed the database mode for SharePoint integration (before, we only had it in native mode), so we created a new database for this SharePoint Integration type. Next, I installed the Report Server Add-in for SharePoint 2007 server and it was successful. However when configuring the Report Server, we got stuck at the step "Grant Database Access". For some reason we keep getting error message "Named instance not found" We already installed Service Pack 3 on the Report Server... I heard that the problem is because the mismatched version between the Report Server Add-in in SharePoint and the SQL RS version... but I don't think this is the case for us. Do we need to install WSS on our Report Server too? Another question: We already integrate our Report Server with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0. However I see that when the Report Server is in the SharePoint Integration mode, all the reports in CRM don't work (because Report Manager is no longer available in this mode). Do you think it would be the best practice to install a copy of Report Server instance in our SharePoint 2007 server? Thank you, greatly appreciate all your hel

problem rename sharepoint 2010 search service application admin database

Hi all, i have a problem that hopefully someone has an answer to. i am not too familiar with sharepoint so please excuse my ignorance. we have sharepoint 2010 on a windows 2008r2 server. everything seems to work fine. but as you know, the default database names are horrendous. i have managed to rename all of them, except for the "search service application" admin database. the default is: Search_Service_Application_DB_
the other 2 databases (crawl and property) were renamed without a problem. we are following the article from technet on how to rename the search service admin db (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-nz/library/ff851878%28en-us%29.aspx). it says to enter the following command: $searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication -DatabaseName "new database name" -DatabaseServer "dbserver" however, i get an error about identity being null. no big deal, i add the -Identity switch and the name of my search service application. but the real problem comes the error it throws: Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication : The requested database move was aborted as the associated search application is not paused. At line:1 char:54 + $searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication <<<< -Identity "Search Service Application" -DatabaseName "ShareP

Problem With SharePoint Designer 2010 and the Search.asmx Web Service

I've created a web service datasource on a 2010 site using SharePoint Designer. When I try to make use of the datasource on a page I get the "The server returned a non-specific error when trying to get data from the data source..." message. The datasource connects to _vti_bin/search.asmx. I am using the QueryServiceSoap port and operation QueryX. I've tried various queryXml strings, including site & people searches using both SQL and keyword syntax. eg <QueryPacket xmlns="urn:Microsoft.Search.Query" Revision="1000"><Query domain="QDomain"> <SupportedFormats><Format>urn:Microsoft.Search.Response.Document.Document</Format></SupportedFormats> <Context> <QueryText language="en-US" type="MSSQLFT"> SELECT Size, Rank, Path, Title, Description, Write, Filename, Description, Author FROM scope() WHERE CONTAINS ('"Lorum"') AND ( ("SCOPE" = 'All Sites') ) ORDER BY "Rank" DESC </QueryText> </Context> <Range><StartAt>1</StartAt><Count>20</Count></Range> <EnableStemming>false</EnableStemming> <TrimDuplicates>true</TrimDuplicates> <IgnoreAllNoiseQuery>true&l

Delgation via web service problem

Hi, I have an ASP.NET 2.0 web app which calls a one way web method on a web service. This web method contacts remote servers and pulls back config information to confirm the state of new server builds (config, settings etc) and inserts the collected data into a SQL database. The web app is supposed to pass through the callers kerberos ticket to the web service and then again to the newly built server which is being checked, all via impersonation and kerberos delegation using the calling users administrator privileges. The trouble is, I just can't get the web service to run under the callers context. I have the SPN's set up, delegation turned on in the active directory objects for the computer running the web app and service and the worker process domain user service account. I have windows authentication on and impersonation set to true in both the web app and service's web.config, integrated authentication in IIS, and IE settings are all ok. All has been checked out and passes the tests in DelegConfig, but it still won't work. Where am I going wrong? Thanks for any help!
