How to get around the 'has no supported translation to SQL' for a sortable field?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 12, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net
There's an issue I'm having in several areas of my ASP.NET site, but am using the following as an example. If I can get it solved, then I'm reasonably sure it has applications elsewhere.Let's say I have a gridview based on the aspnet_membership table. Its LINQ datasource is aspnet_membership, which exists in my datacontext.By itself, it works GREAT in the grid.However, showing UserId in and of itself doesn't have much meaning; I wanted to include UserName.So, in my Public Partial Class, I created a read-only property UserName: Public ReadOnly Property UserName() As String Get Dim db As New MyDataContext Dim User As aspnet_User = db.aspnet_Users.Single(Function(p) p.UserId = UserId) Return User.UserName End Get End PropertyThis retrieves and displays the correct data, no problem there.However, I'm not able to sort on that new column. When I attempt to do so, I get the following error:The member 'aspnet_Membership.UserName' has no supported translation to SQL.A workaround is, of course, to use a Sql datasource. But as I'm learning more about LINQ and the partial classes, I want to learn how to do it the correct way.

                                         PreviousUpdateTime = gamePlayed.PreviousUpdateTime,
                                        TimeInGame = gamePlayed.TimeInGame,

Here i feel that problem is due to

Individual field - MySQL

I was wondering how to recieve an individual field from my MySQL database.

I have been able to get a row, but what I am trying to do is get a name from my database and set it into the HeaderText in my DataGrid.

The way I am trying to do it at the moment is

using (OdbcCommand cmd = new OdbcCommand(formQuery, con))
                formDataGrid.Columns[0].HeaderText = cmd.ExecuteReader(
                    CommandBehavior.CloseConnection |

This doesn't seem to get a value from the GetValue, but if use

using (OdbcCommand cmd = new OdbcCommand(formQuery, con))
                formDataGrid.DataSource = cmd.ExecuteReader(
                    CommandBehavior.CloseConnection |

it will bind my data into the grid.

I just want to be able to change the HeaderText in the first coulmn of the DataGrid from one table and have the DataGrid be filled from another table.

I can fill the DataGrid its just changing the HeaderText that I am having trouble with.

Any help?

FormView Text Field Being Set by A Drop Down List

Hello, I have a FormView which is used to insert a record into a database.  Outside of this formview i have a drop down list, I want to grab the value from that drop down list and set one of the text fields within the formview to it's currently selected value.  I've tried the following code, but the dynamic categorytextbox line is what seems to not be working.
