SQL Server 2008 Uninstall

I am running SQL Server 2008 on VISTA. I am having problems with SSIS components tha need to run in 32-bit.  It was recommended to unistall 2008 and re-install 2005.  However, trying to uninstall 2008 is causing my machine to freeze half-way through the process.  Before I tried to unistall I tried to repair and it also caused my screen to freeze (I issued a hard-shut down of my machine).  Now I am not sure what is happending.  How can I fix this?

SQL Server 2008 R2 fails after Windows XP Pro SP3 install

We recently encountered an issue with SQL Server 2008 R2 failing to run after the upgrade from Windows XP Pro SP2 to SP3. This was tested and reproduced (with varying results) on more than one computer. Steps to reproduce this. On a Windows XP Pro machine with Service Pack 2 installed, install SQL Server 2008 R2. Next upgrade Windows to Service Pack 3. Now upon opening SSMS or trying to start the SQL server service you receive the following message: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem". In some instances reinstalling/repairing SQL Server 2008 R2 does fix the issue.  In other cases the installer crashes and you need to use msizap to clean it up before you can reinstall.  In other cases you do not receive any errors at all. After testing in multiple virtual machines it looks like the cleaner the Windows install the more likely you are to run into this issue.  On machines with most or all windows updates (prior to SP3) installed you do not necessarily even get the failure.  On machines with just Windows XP Pro SP2 installed with no additional updates you get the failure every time. Obviously the SQL Server 2008 R2 prerequisites are installed in all cases in order to be able to install SQL server to begin with. Any help with this would be appre

SQL Server Express 2008 Setup fails. Support Rule "Restart Computer" Failed

Hi, I have been trying to install SQL Server Express for most of the day now without any luck.  Whatever I do setup fails at the stage of Setup Support Rules, Rule "Restart Computer" - Failed.  Needles to say I have restarted (several times!) and I have tried downloading  and installing the "Advanced", "Tools" and "Basic" versions, all give the same error.  Trying a repair does the same.  I have been searching the net for an answer without success, any help would be MUCH appreciated. Further info: I am trying to install a stand-alone installation on to a single PC running under XP SP 3 with .NET 3.5 SP1 installed.  The PC did have some earler versions of SQL server installed but I (?hopefully?) removed all of these through Control Panel.  Before trying the first SQL install I installed Windows installer 4.5 and PowerShell 1.0 as per the Microsoft Instructions. Running SQL Server Configuration Manager results in an error (MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap in might not have been installed correctly).  A directory structure for SQL server exists in "Program Files".  Services MSC shows SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) as Automatic Statup (not running).  Trying to start this manually gives error 14001: "application configuration incorrect - re-install to fix" .......... Which is precisely what I'm trying to do.........:(

Connection to SQL server 2008 fails randomly

I'm sure a lot of you have seen this error: "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server" Normally I would assume that this would mean that there's a problem connecting to the SQL server, but currently I'm having a hard time figuring out what the problem is and how to fix it The problem only occours randomly, but mostly it is when I from the same computer calls the server several times for example like this: For i as integer = 0 to 500 OpenConnectionToSqlServer(Bla bla) ReadData() CloseConnection() next I always makes sure to close the connection again. The more often I connect to SQL server in a row, the higher is the percentage of errors I have created my code so that if the above error happens, the program will wait for a second, then try again (after 3rd try it will stop trying)   I have several times been monitoring the SQL server at the same time, but I can't seem to see anything from there :(

how do I uninstall "Management Tools - Basic in SQL Server 2008 R2?  The regular remove program does not have this option highlighted.    I am trying use some of the advance option and learn something more and now ssms is useless.         the discovery report tells me these are installed but I have no way of uninstalling.  .  I want to replace this with my developer edition that I purchased but have lots of trouble installing because of the express version.  Please help.  I'd really appreciate it. SQL Server 2008 Installation / Uninstall failed: Error 1603

Hello! I've been trying to install the SQL Server 2008 CTP 5.0 on a Windows Server 2008. The installation failed and left the shared components installed but the database engine was missing. So I tried to roll back the installation and stumbled upon the problem again. Now I can't install or uninstall any SQL Server (I tried 2005 as well) without these results. This is the file *Sql_Cpu32_1_ComponentUpdateSetup.log === Verbose logging started: 01.01.2001  20:30:03  Build type: SHIP UNICODE 4.00.6001.00  Calling process: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\setup100.exe ===MSI (c) (30:CC) [20:30:03:671]: Resetting cached policy valuesMSI (c) (30:CC) [20:30:03:671]: Machine policy value 'Debug' is 0MSI (c) (30:CC) [20:30:03:671]: ******* RunEngine:           ******* Product: {8151C56C-5426-481C-96AF-F221FE1A10F2}           ******* Action:            ******* CommandLine: **********MSI (c) (30:CC) [20:30:03:687]: Client-side and UI is none or basic: Running entire install on the server.MSI (c) (30:CC) [20:30:03:687]: Grabbed execution mutex.MSI (c) (30:CC) [20:30:04:062]: Cloaking enabled.MSI (c) (30:CC) [20:30:04:062]: Attempting to enable all disabled privileges before calling Install on ServerMSI (c) (30:CC) [20:30:04:125]: Incrementing counter to disable shutdown. SQL Server 2008 Windows Authentication Mode fails for Database Engine, error 18456

I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (10.0.1600.22.080709-1414) on a Windows Vista 32-bit development machine with Windows Authentication Mode only (no SQL Server Authentication).   Since this is a development machine, I saw no need for Mixed Mode when I did the install.  The SQL Server Management Studio allows me to login to Analysis Services, Integration Services, Reporting Services, BUT NOT the Database Engine!Windows Authentication for the Database Engine gives the following error: EventID: 18456Login failed for user MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]The 'fix' I have found online is to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine.  Unfortunately, I can't since I didn't install SQL Server Authentication mode (only Windows Authentication Mode).  It appears my only recourse is to uninstall, then reinstall in Mixed mode, then to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine. Before I do so, does anyone know of a better approach?Scott D Duncan

Cannot uninstall SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer from Vista 32 bit SP2

Hi, I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer and I now wish to go back to an earlier configuration (2008) but I cannot uninstall it. I do have Visual Studio 2008 and 2010 installed (with their instance of SQLEXPRESS), is this blocking the total removal of SQL Server 2008 or is their another issue here? The uninstall reports that all worked fine. Thanks for your help, Bex

SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup fails to install properly

Hello, I am not able to install 2008 R2 on my laptop. I have 2005 and 2008 installed previously. It says in one of the attached screenshots that the OLAP service cannot be started. I have attached the errors in screenshots and also my summary log, please advise thank you.

Edit: I am able to manually startup the SQL 2008 R2 service, and can login as "sa" without a password... but strangely I did select mix mode authentication and did supply a password during the installation wizard too..

Silent install of SQL Server 2005 fails when SQL Server 2008 is installed

We currently install SQL Server 2005 Express silently during our installation, using the following switches

We also attach a 2005-created database immediately after using the following command line (^ is a path concat operator in Installshield):

sqlcmd.exe -S .\\SQLEXPRESS -E -i \"" + svConfigPath ^ "SetupUapDB.sql\" -vmdfpath=\"" + svConfigPath ^ "UapCfg.mdf\" -vldfpath=\"" + svConfigPath ^ "UapCfg_log.ldf\" -o \"" + svConfigPath ^ "SqlCreateDB.txt\" -e

Note that we do not specify an instance name.  We ran into a situation where someone had installed SQL Server 2008 on a box using a default instance name and our install then failed.  I am considering 2 possible fixes, and have questions for both.

Fix #1: Specify an instance name.  Ideally this would install SQL Server 2005 Express side by side with SQL Server 2008, create a unique instance name and we'd be good to go right?  If yes, what is the accepted convention for specifying instance names?

Fix #2: Not sure if this is possible.  Can we detect if SQL Server 2008 is on the box, and if yes, apply our 2005 database to it instead?  In this case (tell me
