DTExec is MUCH slower that just running my package in Debug mode in BIDS 2005

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 11, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
I am using BIDS / SSIS 2005.  I have a large package that runs very smoothly and fairly quickly when run in debug-mode through BIDS.  When I actually deploy the package to SSIS and execute it using either DTExec or DTExecUI it is WAAAAYYY slower than when run from the development environment.  So slow that I become convinced it is hanging on steps that execute very very quickly in BIDS.  I have read this thread -> http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlintegrationservices/thread/5585fa13-dd15-4406-9d4a-e993f2af5929 which has not helped. I understand that DTExec would be faster than DTExecUI because the former does not have to deal with the GUI component but I would have expected both (and especially DTExec) to be faster than running in debug from BIDS. I realize I am not providing a ton of detail here, problem is I just don't know where to start... any advice on what I should be looking at to improve package execution through DTExec and / or DTExecUI would be greatly appreciated.  Why would DTExec be so much slower than BIDS Debug??? Thanks in advance.. - Charles

How to figure out if package runs in debug mode

Hi, I would like to know whether there is a possiblity to dynamically determine at runtime if a script is runing in debug mode or is being executed via SQL Server Agent? My goal is to prompt the user with some information e.g. initial catalog ensuring the package is being ran in the correct environment (development/production). However, as SQL Server Agent does not support MessageBoxes I would like to write some alternative code in this case. Thanks in advance!

SSIS 2005 & 2008 BIDS and VS2005/2008 Will VS2010 work with either SSIS package?

I've read the old posts about having to have the BIDS version match the SSIS package version. My question is with VS2010 is there any change? Can I edit either of the old versions of SSIS packages in VS2010 or do I have to have 3 versions of Visual Studio/BIDS on my machine? TIA J

Running SSIS package from Stored Procedure using dtexec and Pass boolean value

We are using SSIS 2005 and sql server 2005. My package has a boolean type package level variable. Eg: IsClientNull boolean type.

I call this package from stored procedure. In addition to passing values for other parameters, how can I pass boolean value.

My code is like this:

SET @CMD='dtexec ' +
'/FILE ' + @pShareName + @pPackageName + ' ' +
'/MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " ' +
'/SET "\Package.Variables[User::StartDate].Properties[Value]";' +
CONVERT(char(10), @pStartDate, 120) + ' ' +
'/SET "\Package.Variables[User::EndDate].Properties[Value]";' +
CONVERT(char(10), @pEndDate, 120)
IF (@pClient IS NULL)

 SET @CMD = @CMD + ' ' +
 '/SET "\Package.Variables[User::IsClientNull].Properties[Value]";' +

Visual Studio 2005 won't enter debug mode.

I am developing asp.net 2.0 using c# and when I place a break point on a line of code and hit f5 or "start debugging" it just brings up the website without stopping at the breakpoint.

 It is set for debug not release and I don't know what else to do? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Error Running SSIS Package as SQL Agent Job loading a file from network drive, works fine in bids an

Having problems reading an excel file from a networked drive while running a package as a SQL Agent job step as a type "SQL Server Integration Services Package". I have agent running as an AD account, and I can use the execute package utility logged in as this account and it works. When I log into the server as this account, I can see the network drive, read/write/create to folders on the drive but when I try to run the agent job it cant find the file. I tried using the unc path in the config file rather than a mapped drive, still no luck. If I use a local drive (c) in the config file, the job works fine so it has to do with the network drive. Running windows server 2003 standard R2, SQL Server 2005 standard sp3. Any ideas out there?

SSRS 2005 "Mixed" Authentication Mode

I have a web application where users can authenticate using either SiteMinder or Windows domain accounts.  This is actually configured as two separate virtual directories within IIS 6.  Both applications need to use the same instance of SSRS.  Is it possible to configure the SSRS web application so that if a user is authenticated by SiteMinder it impersonates a Windows account, but if they are already Windows-authenticated that account is used instead?

SSIS package Scheduled Job Not Running

I'm not sure which way to research this issue.. I have an SSIS package that we can run just fine manually. But, when we put it into a scheduled job, it won't run. The package is on the same system as the SQL Server (2005), but it does call for updates from tables on another SQL Server (2000) on another domain (trusted). So, I'm thinking this might be a permissions / security issue, but not sure where to start... The package ProtectionLevel is "don't save sensitive", but that didn't help. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. jill

My Sql server 2005 Database in recovery mode for 3 -4 hours every day

No logging when running package from job!!

We are facing an issue when deploying some packages to the server. Our packages are deployed to File System in SSIS package store. We have defined a logging connection to MSDB in all packages and use that to log to msdb..sysssislog. Also, a config file(for each package) is used to store the connections and other variables Problem is, when we schedule the package through a job(using SSIS Package step type) , giving the config file...the package executes but it doesnt log anything to sysssislog. However, if I right click on the package in the Filesystem store and run it, providing the same config file. It runs and also logs.. We are trying to figure out why it wont log from the job

Shared dataset in SSRS 2008 R2 running on SSAS 2005

I am trying to create a report in SSRS 2008 R2 using SSAS 2005 as a datasource. My dataset has a date parameter. When I create an embedded dataset in my report everything works fine, but when I create a shared dataset with the exact same mdx query, I get the following error: An error occurred during local report processing. The definition of the report 'xxxx' is invalid. The Value expression for the report parameter 'DateCalendarHierarchy' contains an error: [BC30034] Bracketed identifier is missing closing ']'. Does anybody have any ideas? Is this a bug? Thanks, Louis

Problems running a bat file within a SSIS package

I have a ssis package which has 2 tasks, first it builds an excel sheet with data on the server from where I am running the ssis pkg and the second task (a sql process task), runs a bat. the bat file that basically copies the  excel sheet created from the first step to another server. Problem is that the ssis pkg runs succesful when i run it from BIDS, bust when I run is as ajon, it gets hung. It completes the first step, it is the sescond step that is get hung. I noticed that when i run from BIDs, it does come up with a window open file - security warning and says the publisher could not be verified, are you sure you want to run this software. why does it do that ??? the file I am asking to run is a .bat file. it should automatically use the cmd.exe app to run the bat file. Please help !!!   Thanks in advance.

Not Able to debug while application is running.

 Hi I am working with a Visual studio 2005 (2.0 frame work) with a windows application When I am Running the application in Debug mode and if I do some code change it is giving the following exception.   "C:\\XXX\bin\Debug\Scheduling.dll] Invalid Typeref token.     Could not load type "System.ComponentModel.Component" from assembly "Version=, CultureCould not load type "System.ComponentModel.Component" from assembly "Common, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null".=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null". 1:00:34 PM "

Using Foreach loop Container in SSIS 2005 package and scheduling the package using SQL job on 64-bit

I've an SSIS package 2005 which uses a for each loop container, this package runs fine when I run it on the local machine . My server is 64 bit SQL 2005 and I 've successfully deployed my package on the server both to the File system and SQL server. I've also set Run64bitruntime to false in my pacakge. Now I need schedule the package using SQL job. Since Microsoft Jet Provider 4.0 is not available for 64 bit, I had to write script to schedule the package. Here is my script. declare   @ssisstr varchar(8000) declare @returncode int set   @ssisstr = 'dtexec /sq Package1 /DE 123' EXEC   @returncode = xp_cmdshell @ssisstr select   @returncode I'm getting the following error when I execute the job. Could not load package "Package1" because of error 0xC0010014. Description: One or more error occurred. There should be more specific errors preceding this one that explains the details of the errors. This message is used as a return value from functions that encounter errors. I'm getting the same error if I run this from commandline. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance. PARC

Loading Decimal Number From Excel into SQL Server 2005 using SSIS Package

If you have an excel spreadsheet that displays a number .02 (because it is formated) but internally it is stored as .2654329 and you want to load .2654329 how can you do that in the SSIS package?  When we load the spreadsheet it is loading .02.  Is there some kind of option in the SSIS package to tell the package to load the internal number?lcerni

BIDS wont let me edit script tasks, Package wont open without a "temp" folder in appdata???

I have a very stupid problem, because the way BIDS works is just hilariousy idiotic.    Short Story: 1) When i try to edit script tasks it will complain about "failed to create project at some random path in temp folder" and wont open anything. I cannot edit script tasks anymore. THe project is essentialy dead to me. REboot or restart wont help. I spent five hours on this project and i dont want to do all that work from scratch! 2) I cannot port my solution to antoher computer or place because it links to the files in appdata/local/temp folder of the pc for some reason. If i delete that folder or port the solution, it will complain about some file in temp folder called "3jews....tmp" and will say that solution is unopenable. Need help to resuce my project and be able to continue working on it!   Long Story: When you make a project, BIDS stores its files in a separate folder: a solution file, a project file, a package file etc. You might have thought, you can now carry your solution over by copying this folder. WRONG! The BIDS actually stores files of  the solution in /Users/name/AppData/Local/Temp folder! And It cannot open a solution/package/project without files from that folder, now what kind of idiotism is that?   It all started with BIDS not saving my script task changes, then telling me "cannot create project in folder

SSIS 2005 Logging different events under BIDS and Scheduler

I have a package that is working and logging correctly under BIDS 2005 (SS 2005). It logs what I want (in particular "Information" log messages) to a text file. But when I run the package under the scheduler, all it logs to the text file is "Package Started" and "Package Ended". How do I get it to log the same messages under the scheduler as under BIDS?
