Cannot modify the Search Topology

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 10, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
I am finalizing a deployment of SharePoint 2010 and search is fighting me. When I try to modify farm search topology it fails right away with the following error: Error An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception Information: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.   Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation. Correlation ID: 5281c12c-0283-4c1f-bb79-7cab776e5afe Date and Time: 9/10/2010 11:07:33 AM   Any help would be great I am willing to provide what ever other info you need. I have tried to create a new Search App as well and it tells me: The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component. Verify that the administration component 'cf4f5e91-5a2d-49aa-aa73-0006aa034b42' in search application 'Search Service Application 1' is in a good state and try again. I am assuming that I need to get into the topology to fix this but I get the same failure that I started with.

Search Searver 2010 - scaling farm topology

I am trying to make sure I fully understand how to scale out my small search server 2010 farm topology.

I understand that in 2010 a server is generic and flexible, providing any number of services and is not role specific (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/sharepoint2010setup/thread/A3CA629C-C006-4002-AACF-74FDBFD6F06D)

I have reviewed Microsoft's various Sharepoint Search 2010 PDF documentation for planning search deployments.

I seem to be confused on probably the easiest part of all this.

Here is my server architecture I would like to implement (typical small farm architecture):

- app-msss-3 query server, WFE, index partition 1, query component 1m
- app-msss-2 query server, WFE, index partition 1, query component 1
- app-msss-1 crawl server, hosts CA
- app-db (contains search DB instance)

Here are the steps I performed.

1. Install Search Server 2010 on app-msss-1 (farm install, complete), create farm
2. Setup CA and search center on app-msss-1
3. Install Search Server 2010 on app-msss-2 (farm install, complete), join existing farm
4. Add index partition to app-msss-2

    Best Topology : :Configure Search for fast and best results?

    Hi Team,

    I have 2 WFE and 1 indexserver. I have to define the topology in a way that I get the best result in term of search.

    Should I configure the INDEX and QUERY on INDEX server. And crawling on 2 WFE for the fast search results. Keeping in mind the that it will take the network bandwidth if I configure INDEX and Query on separate index server.

    Please let me know the best topology with a reason?

    SPS 2010 Search :: Search Topology Queries?

    Hi All,

    I have search topology as shown below.

    Check if this is ok : -

     (sERVER1)  WFE    (sERVER2)  WFE

    (sERVER 3)  QUERY      (sERVER4) QUERY

    (sERVER 7) aPPLICATION sERVER                   (sERVER 8) MYSITE

    I guess will work good.

    I have a query here : -

    Query 1) As I have 2 Query server , is that i need to assign a virtual IP pointing to these two query server and load balance them?

     Query 2 As I have 2 Crawl server , is that i need to assign a virtual IP pointing to these two query server and load balance them?

    If we need not to put them in load balance then how will the two server handle the request?

    Modify Search Control for a Publishing Site

    Hello all,

    We are currently implementing a search control in a master page for a publishing site.  The current control that we are using is as follows:<asp:ContentPlaceHolder id="PlaceHolderSearchArea" runat="server">
    <SharePoint:DelegateControl runat="server" ControlId="SmallSearchInputBox" Version="4"/>

    I am currently looking to see what I can do to specify some settings that the client is after.  First, the search is only returning results from the site level.  We want to get results back from the complete collection.  Is there a way I can specify this using a value in the above control?  Secondly, by default I am getting the "Search This Site" in the control when you view site in browser.  How can I modify this?  I either don't want to show anything for text or chance it to Search all site."  Can this be achieved just change the behavior of the control above.

    Any assistance appreciated.

    MS SQL Server: Search All Tables, Columns & Rows For Data or Keyword Query

    If you need to search your entire database for specific data, this query will come in handy.

    So when a client needs a custom report or some sort of custom development using Great Plains, most of the time I will have to track down the data in the system by running this query and find the table(s) it is in.

    SharePoint Gets Search Analytics

    Microsoft's SharePoint Portal Server 2003 was sold into a large number of organizations based solely on the strength of the search tool. Organizations hungered for a way to find the data they had generated.

    Using SharePoint Search feature in ASP.Net Application

    Integrating ASP.Net application in to MOSS 2007 to utilize SharePoint Enterprise Search Feature can be done by using Business Data Search.

    How to modify the login control

    I'd like to record more information than the default control allows as well as perform actions with the input when the form is submitted but I'm having trouble figuring out how.

    So firstly, if I want to record the middlename for example, how would I do that, and by default, where would it go if anywhere?
    When the form is submitted, I'd like to take specific input, such as just the middlename for example, and write some linq to sql code to specify when and how it's stored.
    In what event would I put this code?

    Search for a string in my datasource dynamically

    I am displaying an Rssfeed on my page by using XmlDataSource and Datalist controls.

    I want the user to be able to limit the information that is returned to my datalist.  To do this I have a textbox on the form that allows the user to enter their search criteria.

    I need to be able to dynamically create a query string utilizing the information that the user entered in the textbox.  I am also using a drop down list and allowing the user to select whether they want to search in the title, description, or all parts of the xml file.

    I am having trouble figuring out how to reference the data contained in my textbox in my query string.  Where the query string says 'asp', I want to replace 'asp' with the content from my sSearch variable.  Can anyone tell me how to reference my variable in the query string???

    string sSearch = txtSearch.Text;
            string SQuery = "";

            if (DropDownList2.SelectedIndex == 0)
                SQuery = "[contains(title), 'asp')]";

    Active Directory and .NET: paging the search result

    Hi everybody!

    I have a question about Active Directory in .NET
    For my project I need to fetch results from Active Directory search page by page, because later I would need to bind it to the pageable DataGrid.

    I tried to use .NET library DirectoryServices for that, but paging provided by this library is transparent to the user and is used only to increase the efficiency of searching, when results are too big. I.e. I cannot tell the DirectorySearcher to give me first page, then the next or previous page, it returns me all resulting pages in one bundle.

    However, what I need is to explicitely get page after page directly from the AD searcher and to be able to go at least one page forward or backward.

    The solution with copying all results to the DataBase and then do the paging is not accepeted by the clent, since it is too inefficient. And since it's a Web app, I cannot keep results in memory either.

    I found some hints about COM Interface, but I could not find good and detailed examples or explanations. I aslo found this line of code: DirectoryServices.Interop.IDirectorySearch.ExecuteSearch(), but I don't know which libraries should i add to be able to compile this code.

    If somebody could help me out with that problem, any suggestion is welcome, 'cause this issue is eating me alive :)

    Thank you!
