I really wasn't sure where to put this, and this seemed like a decent enough place.
I'm sure like a lot of other small businesses we are in the process of moving from Visual Studio 6 and Office 2000 up to Visual Studio 2010 and Office 2010. All of our applications are run inhouse so distribution isn't a issue here as everything is "local".
We are now running into the question of do we really need to use and spend money on Access. I'm going to say that 98% of our applications that use access are just using it as a database and not using Access (i.e. using C++, C# or VB as the front
end). Now that SQL Server Express Edition is around would that be a better alternative for what we are doing? We do run SQL Server 2000 (moving to 2008) for our "bigger" needs but our DBA would rather keep the smaller things away from it (his
choice and there is no changing his mind). We currently run 4 servers and would be able to put SQL Server Express on one of the other servers. Would this be something that would work, are there user limits I'm not aware of? Looking for input
on this.
Thanks everyone in advance!
