Rebooting one Instance on a SQL 2008 Server with multiple instances installed

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 10, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hello, Hoping someone can answer the following questions ... If I have SQL Server 2008 with multiple Named Instances configured on it, can I reboot one Named Instance without rebooting any of the other Named Instances, or without having to reboot the entire server ? For example, if I have an application that needs to be re-booted and it requires the Database to be re-booted. Regards, JD

installed ms sql server 2008 and there is no db instance

I had the 2005 version on installed on my pc...I installed visual studio 2010 professional but the sql 2005 did not work. I tried to install sql 2008 but I was unable to. Searched on the web and found out that I had to uninstall sql 2005 for some reason. I did. I successfully installed sql 2008 now but there is no database instance. I tried sqlcmd -L and there where no servers available.   Can I install I new instance now? How can I do that?

Installing multiple instances of SQL Server R2 creates permissions issues - first instance won't st

After installing two named instances of SQL Server 2008 R2 DataCenter edition (R2D2 and C3P0) I found the first instance would no longer start.  The errorlog showed the reason to be an invalid path. 2010-09-14 18:15:39.12 Server      Error: 17113, Severity: 16, State: 1. 2010-09-14 18:15:39.12 Server      Error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.) occurred while opening file 'C:\MSSQL\SQLDAT\MSSQL10_50.R2D2\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' to obtain configuration information at startup. An invalid startup option might have caused the error. Verify your startup options, and correct or remove them if necessary. Finding the files in the proper location I check the ACLs and found the Local Group created for the second instance on the ACL for the first instance.  That is to say for instance R2D2 I found MSP-JANHONJ7\SQLServerMSSQLUser$MSP-janhonj7$C3P0 instead of the MSP-JANHONJ7\SQLServerMSSQLUser$MSP-janhonj7$R2D2 that was originally there. named instance sql server 2008 install on cluster

I have a production two-node cluster with sql server 2008 sp1 cu7 running over windows server 2008 sp2. If I were to install a new named instance on this live environment, would it impair the default sql server instance functionality? I'm not referring to processor/io while the install is in progress. My question specifically is would the install process by its nature bring down the default instance. I'm pretty sure it won't, but don't see any documentation that would confirm this. thanks.

Can not connect to user instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services in Visual Studio 2

I used SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services (not SQL Server 2008 Express) in Visual Studio 2010 because it is the fast and easy way to developed and managed data-driven applications with powerful built-in reporting and full-text search functionality. I received Sql Server 2008 Service Pack 1 with Windows Update. It's ok if I connect to instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services (with SP1) through SQL Server Management, but if I try to attach a database in Server Explorer (Visual Studio 2010), I get the following error: "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I'm stuck at this point. Is there a fix or a workaround? I've already tried deleting the 'C:\Users\Administrtor\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS' directory as mentioned in other posts, with no luck. VS 2008, in addition to VSeWSS, has to be installed to the WSS3.0/MOSS2007 web server?

We just started to develop SharePoint Intranet by using WSS 3.0.  To get a first hand experience in developing SharePoint Web Parts in VS 2008, I plan to install VSeWSS to the web server where we installed WSS3.0, and MOSS2007 in the future. Do I still need to install VS 2008 to this web server, or I can develop SharePoint web parts from my workstation where VS 2008 was already installed?

How to use single windows service to host multiple WCF Services instances (Each instance of WCF is i

How to use single windows service to host multiple WCF Services. I have a mutiple instance of same WCF service in different folder, each instance has unique service name and port. WCFService has reference to Reg-Free COM Reference, i have Native.WCFService.manifest in each folder. Ex: WCFService1 is in "C:\WCFService01\WCFService.dll, Native.OCWCFService.manifest, OCWCFService.dll.config WCFService2 is in "C:\WCFService02\WCFService.dll, Native.OCWCFService.manifest, OCWCFService.dll.config Now i need host above services from single Windows Service. I am trying to create AppDomain for each above WCFService Instance from Windows Service and then host. Its working if i register COM dll in the server using regsvr32, but when i un register COM dll, i am getting unable to load COM component .... This looks like AppDomain is not loading COM DLL and Manifest files. Its looks strange but we need it in this way because we have production and test environment in the same server. Everything works fine if create a seperate Windows Service for each WCFService Instance, but my manager wants single Windows Service :). Any help whould be really appreciated.  ravi kumar reddy

Getting Sql Server Management Studio 2008 installed on local computer

Hello, I have been trying to figure out this problem for a while now so hopefully someone can help me out - I would really appreciate it! Right now I have SQl Server Management Studio2005 installed on my computer for a SQL sever that we have. We recently got a 2008 sql server and if I remotely access the server, I can see that SQL Management Studio 2008 has been isntalled on the new server. I need to build new databases but need SQL Management Studio 2008 on my computer and I have no idea how to get it. I have a "Microsoft SQl Server 2008 R2" folder on my computer, and I have already tried clicking on "Configuration Tools" and then "SQL Server Installation center" and it isntalls a bunch of things, but none of them are "SQL Server Management Studio 2008."  I also found a link on a Microsoft website that says it's SQL Server Management studio 2008 R2 but it was just the same bunch of programs I already downloaded. How do I install Sql Server Managment Studio 2008 on my computer?! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

PERFMON: Cannot see SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit instance counters from remote machine

Hi, I have 2 machines X and Y. I am using X machine to run perfmon which will remote connect to Y machine and collect the counters for Y machine. I am surprised to see that I am not able to see the counters for SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit when I remote connect the perfmon on X machine to Y machine. However, when I directly log in to Y machine and open perfmon, I can see the counters for SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit !! What is not allowing me to see those counters while connecting remotely? I have same adminstrator rights on both machine for my login and use same login details to log into both machines. Both machiens X and Y are in same network and same domain. Any help will be appreciated.

Create new instance of sql 2008 R2 server

Is there a way to create a instace of sql server just using my pc name? Currently sql uses 'machine name\instance name'

Silent install of SQL Server 2005 fails when SQL Server 2008 is installed

We currently install SQL Server 2005 Express silently during our installation, using the following switches

/qn ADDLOCAL=all REBOOT=ReallySuppress DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=2 SQLAUTOSTART=1 SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=123

We also attach a 2005-created database immediately after using the following command line (^ is a path concat operator in Installshield):

sqlcmd.exe -S .\\SQLEXPRESS -E -i \"" + svConfigPath ^ "SetupUapDB.sql\" -vmdfpath=\"" + svConfigPath ^ "UapCfg.mdf\" -vldfpath=\"" + svConfigPath ^ "UapCfg_log.ldf\" -o \"" + svConfigPath ^ "SqlCreateDB.txt\" -e

Note that we do not specify an instance name.  We ran into a situation where someone had installed SQL Server 2008 on a box using a default instance name and our install then failed.  I am considering 2 possible fixes, and have questions for both.

Fix #1: Specify an instance name.  Ideally this would install SQL Server 2005 Express side by side with SQL Server 2008, create a unique instance name and we'd be good to go right?  If yes, what is the accepted convention for specifying instance names?

Fix #2: Not sure if this is possible.  Can we detect if SQL Server 2008 is on the box, and if yes, apply our 2005 database to it instead?  In this case (tell me

SQL Server 2008 multiple lines in a varchar(MAX) column?

Hi,

I'm using varchar(Max) to store a text file content. It's not taking the newline character. I tried \n and char(13) etc.. whatever solution posted in the net.

ex : update test set f='This is line 1.' + CHAR(13) + CHAR(10) + 'This is line 2.'

after updating it doesn't have any newline or linebreak. Can anyone help me in this how to have linebreaks in the varchar(max) field.

Thanks a lot.
