Upgrade SQL server 2008 R2 from Evaluation Edition to Enterprise Edition

Hello SQL Support group, I have SQl server 2008 R2 installed on a Win 2003 R2 and it is for our SharePoint and Project server 2007 environment. Today I noticed that we have only 75 days left! Seems like we installed it on evaluation mode. Here what we have on Helpàabout : Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Complete (expires in 75 days)    10.50.1352.12 We do have MSDN account, and we have the KEY that comes with the SQL server 2008 R2 enterprise. We would like to assign the key to our SQl server ( we want to have enterprise edition). It is in a production environment now. I would like to know how we can do it  with minimum of down time. I found this link: http://blogs.technet.com/b/sqlman/archive/2010/03/16/sql-server-2008-upgrading-to-standard-enterprise-edition-from-evaluation-edition.aspx On the internet, but doesn’t say anything that we are losing any data after upgrade or not. Please let us know the best way to assign the key, and if it has any impact in our data. Thanks Bahram

Problem connecting to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express from Access 2007

I have a problem with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with MS Access 2007. I am running Windows 7 with 8 gigs memory. I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. Do I now need to install SP1 because I am running with Windows 7? I can open SQL Server using the Management Screen but I cannot connect to MS Access 2007 using SQL Server Express as the database. When trying to connect to SQL Server from Access 2007, I keep getting the message that SQL Server 2005 cannot be found. It will not allow me to sign onto sql server 2008 stating that it cannot be found. Do I have to now run the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP1? Is there an upgrade to MS Access 2007 which will allow me to use SQL Server 2008 R2 Express?

SQL Server 2008 performance: Decision to spend budget to upgrade to enterprise edition

Hi, Currently, we use SQL Server 2008 standard edition. We are planning to improve the performance of our application. The application is built by 3rd party and we can’t change/modify database objects and they seem to be designed fine. The options are spending our budget to upgrade to sql server hardware, or upgrade to SQL Server Enterprise edition. I am a bit confused over the benefits of SQL Server Enterprise edition. The following chart suggests that SQL EE includes “Parallel Index Operations” and “Enhanced Read-ahead and Scan”: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/editions-compare.aspx  How significant are “Parallel Index Operations” and “Enhanced Read-ahead and Scan”? Considering the fact that new hardware is cheaper than sql enterprise license, Should I spend budget to upgrade enterprise edition instead of buying as server with faster CPU and RAM? Thank you, Max

Slow sql-server after upgrade from SQL-Server 2005 x64 standard to SQL-Server 2008 R2 x64 enterprise

We moved our databases to new hardware today (using copy database wizard)

The new hardware should be better than the old one.

We went from 28 GB ram to 128 GB.

We went from 16 cores to 32 cores (with even more cache etc.). We also moved from external SAN with 40 disks to intern disks (8 Samsung SS805 100gb ssd slc)

According to our own metrics we could get twice the IO using IO m

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Installation Problem

Good evening!

I downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (x86 and x64) from MSDNAA (i study computer science) and also  Windows 7 Professional (x86). I installed Windows 7 and i tried to install SQL Server but i receive the "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installation has failed. SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed." error. I tried installing .NET Framework but it doesn't work because it's installed by default with Windows 7 (i checked the "Turn Windows features on or off" page and the "Microsoft .NET framework 3.5.1" checkbox is checked). I understand that this means .NET framework 3.5 SP1 is also installed so i shouldn't have any errors.

Can anyone help me with this installation problem?

Thank you!

Problem uninstalling or reinstalling SQL Server 2008 Express

Hi all, as still a novice user, I am looking for some advise on a problem I am currently having with SQL Server 2008 Express. Thanks in advance.

I had a copy of SQL Server 2008 Express installed on my XP machine. Recently I tried to uninstall it, so that I can install a clean copy of 2008 R2. The uninstallation failed halfway, and subsequently, the SQL server does not start or even allow me to reinstall/uninstall or put in the Microsoft updates meant for the SQL Server 2008 express.

Need advice on how to remove it cleanly, and I do not require any of the database on the current installation. Appreciate any advice.

Below is a copy SQL Server Error Log when I tried to redo the uninstallation:

Usage of SQL Express from Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition (64-bit) to Windows 7

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 was being used along with SQL Express for website development on the Operating System, Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition of Intel Xeon CPU @ 2.13 GHz (2 Processors) containing 12 GB RAM with 64-bit Operating System. Whether the developed website along with the databases may be used on the Operating System, Windows 7 of 64-bit? The website will used within Intranet. Which Operating System and configuration to be used for the Intranet Website? Kindly guide me.

sql server express 2008 problem

We just recently switched from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. I have an application which uses sql express database locally. The problem is after installing new Visual Studio, I can't access the Sql Server 2008 express. When I try to create a new database, or change the existing one, I get following message:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, Error 0 - No connection could be made because target machine is actively refused it.)

When I check the sqlexpress windows service, it is stopped. If I try to enable it, it runs for a few seconds and then stops again.

How do I upgrade and overlay SQL Server 2005 Express with SQL Server 2008 R2

We are upgrading SQL server2005 Express to SQL Server 2008 R2.  We want to replace 2005 Express with 2008 R2 on existing system.  We have lots of questions about how to perform the upgrade safely and pull in our existing databases.  The existing database files are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1.  Also, we'll want to use the existing instance name to avoid having to reconfigure all of the installed clients at our user's workstations.

Should we uninstall the 2005 Express version first?  Will that keep the existing databases on the system?

Or can we install 2008 R2 while the databases are live under the 2005 Express, or should we shut down 2005 Express first?

Will  2008 R2 use the same data folder or create a new one?  If it uses the same folder will it automatically recognize our existing databases?  If it creates a new one, I suppose we can use the migration Wizard.

Thanks for any help....

SQL Server Express 2008 vista x64 installation rpc problem

Hi Folks,

I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 Express in a brand new workstation with Vista Business x64 and I am keep on getting this error:

"The following error has ocurred: The RPC server is unavailable..."

At the same time this alert message is displayed:

"Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work now"

After a while (~1 minute) the computer reboots, but I am not able to log on as usual. I have to reboot manually the computer in "safe mode" first.

Trying to reduce the problem I reinstalled the OS and only run the recommended Windows updates. Other than that the computer is in the absolute initial state. (The firewall is not the problem since I already tried it after disabling it)

Any clue !!!!!

Problem remotely connecting to sql server 2008 express

I am trying to connect to sql server 2008 express remotely from visual studio 2010. On the server, I've enabled the sql browser service, enabled the TCP/IP and named pipes protocols. Also for firewall I added exceptions for the sqlserver and sqlbrowser instances. I tried connecting to the server through telnet by specifying the ip and port and it worked. But when I try connecting from visual studio through sql client I get the following error:

Timeout expired, the timeout period ellapsed prior to the completion of the operation or the server is not responding. Any ideas what might be the problem?

Thank you,

How to Upgrade SQL Server Express 2008 SP1 to SP2

I have downloaded SQL Server Express 2008 SP2 installation and want to upgrade an existing SQL Server Express 2008 SP1 to SP2.

However I cannot seem to find out to do this. I have tried using the /ACTION=UPGRADE, at some point in the installation there comes a choice of which SQL instance to upgrade but the SQL Server Express (SP1) does not show up in the list.

Does anyone know how to run this upgrade to get SP1 to SP2?

Note this is being run and Windows XP SP3.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Upgrade SQL Server 2005 Express 32-bit SP1 to SQL Server 2008 Standard on a 64-bit Server for use wi

When installing & configuring MOSS 2007 the default settings were choosen. So now when we try to access the SSMS I get a message "The evaluation period has expired. Please buy the product at the following url.". I do have a product key for SQL Server 2008 standard but when I am trying to perform a edition upgrade it doesn't detect the SQL Server Instance "OFFICESERVERS" so I am unable to upgrade the server. Because of the limitation in size we are unable to create new doc libraries or pages on the SP site.

Here are the details of the environment:

OS : Windows Server 2008 Standard SP1 64-bit

MOSS 2007 version :, Current License : Office SharePoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License

Database : SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 32-bit

Is there no way to upgrade from SQL Server 2008 Standard to SQL Server 2008 Enterprise with MSDN?

There are no Product Keys for MSDN copies?  I'm in the SQL Upgrade wizard and it needs a Product Key to upgrade?
