Social network analysis and data mining

Hello everybody,

I am a newbie coming with a problem in my project which is talking about how can we study the behavior of  the people inside a given dataset in order to:

identifying the students who is studying in the same department or have a common subject or a project.

I have read about different algorithms like Decision tree, association rule and others but I still have the problem how can I apply theses algorithms on my project. So please anyone can help me or recommend something for me not to hesitate and post that.

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2005: Unearth the New Data Mining Features of Analysis Services 2005

In SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services you'll find new algorithms, enhancements to existing algorithms, and more than a dozen added visualizations to help you get a handle on your data relationships. Plus, enhancements to the Data Mining Extensions to SQL along with OLAP, DTS, and Reporting Services integration make it possible to create a new breed of intelligent apps with embedded data mining technology. Here the author explains it all.

Data Mining requirement specifications

Hello All, Kindly I'm working now in a data mining project and we decided to use SQL server 2008 analysis services data mining algorithms. Now as we are at the start of the project we need to prepare all the required documentations like the requirement specification documents. can anyone help me in getting a template or guidance for the requirement document template or contents.   Regards, HebaHeba El-Desouky

Data Mining - Business User's view

Using BIDS, when I create a Mining model solution I can see lot's of useful utilities like Mining Model viewer, Mining Model Prediction etc that comes with lot's of graphs' etc. What would be the best approach to display these graph's to business users. Can I do this efficiently using SSRS or Do I need to use PowerPivot etc..

Data Mining solution - SSRS Problem

I have created a Data Mining - Time Series solution and I am getting proper results from SSAS(Mining Model prediction tab) & SQL Management Studio query. However when I try to create an report using SSRS, In the field where I am expecting the predicted value, I am getting "#Error" Any suggestions as why this is happening.

Microsoft Data Mining VS SAS Enterprise Miner

Hi We are thinking about using either Microsoft's data mining module for a task or use SAS Enterprise Miner. Price is not a factor. It is my impression that SAS Enterprise Miner is stronger concerning configuring the models with the statistical parameters etc. Does anyone know good arguments for using or not using Microsoft when price is NOT an issue? Thanks, Dennis

Extracting Association Rules from Data Mining Model

Hi I have succesfully created a Data Mining Model using the Association Model. I have deployed and processed it. I need to extract all the rules that is generated by the model. I know that you normally query the model using DMX prediction queries, but in this case I need to extract the rules to a separate table for further processing. I have tried the following approaches unsuccessfully: 1. Linked server in MSSQL Management Studio. DMX query using OpenQuery. The DMX query looks like this: SELECT FLATTENED NODE_CAPTION, NODE_SUPPORT, NODE_PROBABILITY, MSOLAP_NODE_SCORE FROM DataMiningModel.CONTENT WHERE NODE_TYPE = 8   On small models this method works. On larger models with many rules I receive an exception: "XML for Analysis parser: The XML for Analysis request timed out" before it was completed This always happens after 70min. I might have missed a timeout option? 2. Using SSIS to run the same DMX query as above. The method is presented here: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/MDX/64697/ This method works on small models. On larger models that did not work with method 1, it return rules. The number of rules returned is sometimes different for the same package run multiple times. For the largest models it simply returns 0 rules. I suspect that the same XML Parser error happens under the hood of SSIS. I'm currently stuck, and need some inp

Data Mining Solution Question

Hi, I am working for a company that would like to use Aanalysis Services for predictive analytics. My problem is that there are only 40 or so months worth of data. I am wondering if this is enough to even make anything relevant and/or accurate.   So far I've made a time series mining structure, that just uses the booking number as input and predict. I am having a hard time justifying this as they view it as something that could have just been done in excel.   Also I have made a neural network. The company has several (continuous) metrics that they track along with bookings. So I made a neural network to use these inputs to predict the bookings.   This made another problem. The prediction that the neural network makes is different from the next month that that time series predicts and is causing distrust by the potential end users.   I've thought about combining the two models. I could use the output of the neural net and do a natural prediction join of that result into the time series.   Seeking advice, and something that I can do with Analysis Services that could be useful to a company with only a small number of months of data to work with.   -S

Optimizing Data Mining processing time for a Time Series model in SQL Server 2008 R2

Does anyone have any references around optimizing the initial processing time for a data mining model? Books, blogs, etc. I have the Wiley “Data Mining with SQL Server 2008” book, and while I’ve learned a lot from it, it doesn’t seem to cover much around trouble shooting things like processing time. I also have a few other books that have a chapter or two on data mining, but again just basic “here’s what it is and how to set it up”, nothing that quite covers trouble shooting or optimization. I’ve also checked out the various Data Mining blogs/sites.

I’ve got a Microsoft Time Series model I’m basing on a Cube. Very simple, trying to forecast sales. I have one dimension which is the list of products (about 1600), a second which is the time dimension, finally the measure is daily sales figures for each, about 3.2 million rows in total. On a brand new server, with two quad core processors and 16 gig of ram it took 40 hours to process. Seems rather high?

SSAS for heavy network data to serve around 12-15 million rows per day

I am a fresher with the analytics.

Presently, working on a system which tracks the data from Network giants like Bing, Google, Yahoo, Facebook etc. depending upon the profile of customers using our system.

So we our tracking data of around 5-6 million rows in a day. Apart from that, dimensions like Search Keywords and all also contain data of around 50-60 million of rows. Although, daily addition will be low in dimension tables, but it will keep on increasing as customers will increase. Tracking data is expected to grow beyond 15 million.

To provide analytics, I must have minimum of 3 months of data in a cube. To provide trends, it should increase to around 1-4 years (in our future road map).

Presently, I am suffering with fatal issues while processing a cube, like, "The operation cannot be completed because the memory quota estimate xxxx exceeds the available system memory yyyy" - while processing dimensions

Please guide with some good thought process how to manage such a huge data and provide analytics over it. As well throw some light over the approach to follow for testing cubes and data loading packages of ssis.

Please provide the links of articles/videos/blogs & name of books to discuss and decide design the analytics for data-extensive systems. Any kind of reading mater

is it possible to keep data file to network fileshare??

can any one please tell is it possible to keep database files(data or log) to some shared location.and if possible, what will be the performance benifit from this?

Data Mining With Direct Marketing

Hello Data Miners!

I have been reading about Data Mining in preperation for my assignment titled 'How are data fusion and data mining used to improve the effectiveness of direct marketing?' , as you are all no doubt the tip top brains of Data Mining, I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of anything useful you can see for my assignment, I have currently been reading 'Mastering Data Mining' and 'Data Mining Cookbook'.

Thank you all! Smile

How to use the library Data Mining Web Content Viewer

Hi all!

I am developing a web application that will work with Data Mining-models deployed to Analysis Services. I downloaded the library Data Mining Web Content Viewer of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Feature Pack (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ceb4346f-657f-4d28-83f5-aae0c5c83d52&displaylang=en). Installed it in the Program Files folder appears Microsoft SQL Server 2008 DM Content Viewer, in which many assemblies
