Upgrade Solution using a .wsp file created from a site template

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 10, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Hello, I'm creating a new site template that I will need to move from my development to production server. I have saved the template as a .wsp file and installed it on my staging server without any problems. However, I know once the site goes into production that changes will occur and I will need to upgrade the site template. I have tried to make changes to my development site and save a new site template, and then move to my staging server and upgrade the existing solution using the below PowerShell command, but I get an error that the GUIDS are different and the solution cannot be upgraded. Command: Update-SPUserSolution -Identity MyTemplate v1.wsp -Site http://webapplication/site  -ToSolution MyTemplate v2.wsp Error: Update-SPUserSolution : Given solution cannot be upgraded to the provided ToSolution because the solutions have different Guids. Does anyone know how I would upgrade the solution when using a site template as the bases for the solution? Thanks, wm5

Navigation settings not applied when site created from template?

Hi, I created a customized site on MOSS 12.0.0.6529 and disabled Quick Launch and enabled Tree View on it. But when I create new site from this template it has Quick Launch enabled and Tree View disabled. I downloaded the STP file and looked inside and in the details <Details> ... <EnableTreeView>1</EnableTreeView> <EnableQuickLaunch>0</EnableQuickLaunch> ... </Details> Does anyone have a clue why it does not work correctly? Does this work for you correctly?

Receiving error when saving site as template: [InvalidOperationException: Error generating solution

I am getting the following error when saving a site as a template (just this specific site is having this issue - other sites in collection successfully save as template): [InvalidOperationException: Error generating solution files in temporary directory.] Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSolutionExporter.ExportWebAsSolution() +26053165 Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSolutionExporter.ExportWebToGallery(SPWeb web, String solutionFileName, String title, String description, ExportMode exportMode, Boolean includeContent, String workflowTemplateName, String destinationListUrl) +1778 Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSolutionExporter.ExportWebToGallery(SPWeb web, String solutionFileName, String title, String description, ExportMode exportMode, Boolean includeContent) +44 Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationPages.SaveAsTemplatePage.BtnSaveAsTemplate_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) +331 System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.OnClick(EventArgs e) +115 System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.RaisePostBackEvent(String eventArgument) +140 System.Web.UI.Page.RaisePostBackEvent(IPostBackEventHandler sourceControl, String eventArgument) +29 System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) +2981 I'm thinking it may have something to do with permissions, but other sites can save as a template. Also, it does not specify

Site template uploaded to Solution Gallery, activated, not showing in Template Selection

I accidentally created a site on a path where I needed to create a site collection. After deleting the site and creating the site collection in its place, I arrived at the Template Selection page. I went to Solution Gallery, uploaded my solution (a package made by the consultants who built our SharePoint site) and activated it. When I activated it I got an error message, but the solution shows in the Gallery as active. I went back to Template Selection to select a template from the solution, but none are showing--just the standard templates. How do I fix this?

Create Custom Site Template & Deploy as Farm Solution

So I've seen a few posts and blogs about this, but nothing with the specific error I'm getting.  All I'm trying to do is create a custom site template from an existing site (now WSP), and make that custom template available in CA so I can create host-named site collections from that template in PowerShell.  Apparenly this was a lot easier in 2007, as you could just save your template as STP, and run some stsadm addsolution to get it in the farm.  With 2010, I've read there are 2 options:

  1. Install-SPWebTemplate
  2. Deploy via Visual Studio 2010

I've tried running Install-SPWebTemplate (which only takes CAB files), and NOTHING I do works.  I've created a cab from the WSP with makecab, I've renamed the WSP to CAB, and all I get is "cannot find or parse web template file".  So on to VS2010.

Using this article as a guide (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff408263.aspx), I created a new 2010 Import existing solution project, left all items selected, and the import was successful.  I made a change or two to the ONET.xml to fix some things, and then I just try to deploy it to the farm.  Whether I set the URL to the root intranet site, or the CA URL, I get deployment conflict errors:

"The URL or

site created from template but URL results in 404 unless full path is used

I'm fairly new to Sharepoint 2010, but after two days of playing around with this, I feel like I've tried all possible permutations and need some assistance.  Here is the scenario:

Basically, we have a site, a blank site, created by a predecessor, that we've been using as a 'template' for new subsites.  It's not a real template though, native to Sharepoint, it's an actual subsite that we use stsadm.exe to import. (STSADM.EXE -o import -url http://aaaaa/bbbbbbb/NewToolName -includeusersecurity -filename C:\ddddddddd\ffffffffff.dat).

Unfortunately, our server is about to be absorbed into a larger Sharepoint farm, and we'll no longer have access to the box, to run direct admin commands.

I've been testing the actual template functionality, and it's coming up far short of what we currently get by importing that site via cmd line.  What I've done is essentially saved that blank site as a template, then tested it by creating sites based on that template.  And it's pretty messy!

- permission are lost (noted in the help so that's not unexpected, just inconvenient)
- subsites don't carry over--in this case, a blog
- links don't function properly, due to a relativity issue,

Who Goes There?: Upgrade Your Site's Authentication with the New ASP.NET 2.0 Membership API

Here Dino Esposito and Andrea Saltarello cover the plumbing of the Membership API and its inherently extensible nature, based on pluggable providers. To demonstrate the features, they take an existing ASP.NET 1.x authentication mechanism and port it to ASP.NET 2.0, exposing the legacy authentication mechanism through the new Membership API.

Build an Easy Maintenance Intranet Site: Using Office Docs, File System Object, and OLE Structured S

If you've ever needed to build an easy-to-maintain intranet site, here's a solution based on Microsoft Office documents. Many sites require constant updating of their HTML, but the use of Word documents can simplify the process. This article details the construction of a human resources site that exploits the File System Object (FSO), OLE Structured Storage, and ActiveX capabilities of Word documents. This allows the HR staff to copy their revised or newly created Word files to the site, dynamically generate a list of links to their files, and free IS from the constant recoding of HR updates into new HTML pages.

An example of packaging web application containing database upgrade SQL file

A few months ago, we have a blog talking about extending the web publishing pipeline to package database project deployed SQL file.  In this blog, I'll show step by step example of packaging web application with SQL Server database upgrade SQL file using Visual Studio 2010.  This way, we can generate a web package with incremental SQL script to certain database version.  The scenario may help distributions of a web upgrade package which needs to be installed on many different locations, each with their own SQL server database.   1. Create a Web Application Project 2. Add a new "SQL Server 2008 Database Project" to the solution 3. Prepare a development database, such as my test1 database as the following: 4. Trying to launch a .exe file on my local computer from intranet site.

I have been told I can launch a local program on my PC from my intranet site but it has to be done with Active X or vbscript and not javascript.  I found the following little sample html code that will launch notepad.  However, I cannot figure out how to put this in a button, etc., within my aspx or code behind to execute it.  Does anybody have any idea how to do this?  I have a lot of javascript code I am launching urls with and I have even tried using that but again, I have been told that to do it client side it needs to be vbscript or something like this.  Any ideas?

file upload in Create User Wizard Created User event with UpdatePanel Tag wont work?

Hi,

In my Create User Wizard1 Created User Wizard Event, I am collecting extra information from text boxes and allowing

the user to uplad a file.

I have put the Submit button within an Update Panel Tag but since I have done this it does not work.

Is there a way round it. In this situation would you use a trigger.?

workflows when saving site as template with content

I have have a MOSS 2007 site on a production server with custom workflows.  I saved the site as a template with content and used the template to create a sibling site.  I am testing it and the workflows aren't working.  Is this to be expected? I have read that workflow don't work when saving between development and production, but I can't find anything that addresses both sites being on production. Will I need to recreate the custom workflows by hand?

Is there a way to update the template of a site?

I am looking for a best practice for managing and applying site design changes.

For instance, in another platform, I could release a site for testing or production use, so content would be added.  At some later date, a change* to the design would be needed and I would take a copy of the design only, make the change and then apply the updated design to the existing site. Content would be maintained but the new design changes would be applied.

*A change might mean creating new functionality on an existing element, adding new elements or changing an existing element.

How best should this be done in WSS?

Thank you in advance!

Breaking a URL to site and file url

HI,    I have the url of  a file. Now I want to run the GetVersion webservice to get the versions of the file but this webservice takes the file url. So I need to break the full url into two parts SiteUrl + fileUrl. How can I do that using webservice. I know a method using FPRPC method "url to web url" call but that method is not working if the file url contains character of languages other than English. If someone has any idea about this issue as well than it would be a great help. Thanks and Regards
