How do I gather user input at the start of a workflow?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 10, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
I'm a complete sharepoint newbie, so please forgive me :) I have developed a Sharepoint 2007 Sequential workflow in Visual Studio 2010. I have 'bound' it to a particular contact list, and set it such that it will be activated when a contact is edited. (I did this so that I had an easy way of starting the workflow (I just go in and edit a contact)). The workflow itself, on the designer just shows: onWorkflowActivated1 -> codeActivity1 -> logHistoryListActivity1 The workflow works and does the work in the codeActivity1 part. My problem now is how to ask the user for input. At present the code has some hard-coded values in it, for example: Dim emailTemplatePath = "http://en-ecm-jplender/Shared%20Documents/FATF%20Documents/EmailTemplate01.htm" Dim emailTemplate = (New System.Net.WebClient() With {.UseDefaultCredentials = True, .Encoding = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8}).DownloadString(emailTemplatePath) Dim attachmentFilePath = "http://en-ecm-jplender/Shared%20Documents/FATF%20Documents/People.pdf" Dim attachmentData = (New System.Net.WebClient() With {.UseDefaultCredentials = True, .Encoding = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8}).DownloadData(attachmentFilePath) However, I'd like for the user to be able to choose the PDF attachment, and the EmailTemplate document from Sharepoint. I tried fiddling with InfoPath, but it didn't seem to bind to t

Sequential workflow with user input in SPD 2007

I'm just getting in to workflows, so I assume this will result in a simple "do this" or "use VS" answer... anyways..

I am looking to create a sequential workflow in SPD 2007 for MOSS 2007 that will basically be a 5+ step approval workflow.  It will start either on-demand or when a new item is created in a list.  The first part will prompt a user to enter one or more reviewers, then the workflow will route the document through the specific reviewers and several static reviewers.  Each person will accept or deny the document, and write comments as necessary.  The only part I am having trouble with is prompting the user for reviewers, and then properly routing the document to those reviewers.  I have tried to collect the data via an initiation parameter, and I have tried to collect it as an action without much luck.  If possible, what’s the best way to do this without resorting to using VS?

Workflow User Input

I need users to fill 2 text fields before launching my workflow.

How can i make such an input form appear?

Custom Workflow won't auto start, but only for one user.

Hi, I have a custom worklfow which is associated with a list.  The workflow is set to auto start when a new item is added to the list.  This happens fine for every user in my organisation, but not for one particular user.  When he submits a new item to the list, nothing happens. The Workflow just will not start.  There are no errors in the log and no attempt is made to start the workflow.  The user is part of a SharePoint group which has contirbute (no delete) permission on the list, just like everyone else in that group who works fine.

This user also is having problems progressing the workflow, if I start the workflow for him and assign it to him.

The workflow above, manages a CR process, creating tasks for users, taking their responses from custom task forms and populating a CR document held in a document library.  The first step for a user is to fill in a task form which when submitted, sets the task to 100% complete, then populates the CR document with the text the user entered.  Once the task is at 100%, the workflow process is looking for this, closes the task and creates a new task for an approver.  The problem for this same is user is that, the task gets set to 100%, but the CR doesn't progress.  Again, no errors are shown, but the tp_workflowversion value in the userdata table in the content datab

InfoPath: Turn User Input into XML with Custom Forms Using Office InfoPath 2003

Office InfoPath 2003 is a new Microsoft Office product that lets you design your own data collection forms that, when submitted, turn the user-entered data into XML for any XML-supporting process to use. With an InfoPath solution in place, you can convert all those commonly used paper forms into Microsoft Office-based forms and end the cycle of handwriting and reentering data into your systems. Today organizations are beginning to realize the value of the mountains of data they collect every day, how hard it is to access it, and are striving to mine it effectively. InfoPath will aid in the design of effective data collection systems. Here the author shows you how to get started.

Attach Workflow to Task List, don't get option to manually start workflow via dropdown on task item

I am running WSS 3.0 with other workflows which are functioning correctly.  I created a new workflow in Visual Studio 2008 and was able to successfully run it in my dev environment.  I attached the workflow to a task list in my dev environment and was able to manually start the workflow by using the drop down workflow option and using the menus to manually start it.  I installed this workflow in our production environment and attached it to the task list (which had a SPD workflow attached to it which stopped working about a month ago).  I made sure that the option to manually start the workflow was checked.  When I tried to manually start the workflow, (hover mouse over title, drop down) there isn’t a workflow option.  The workflow also will not start automatically when a task is changed.

I attached this same workflow to a different task list in production and get the option to start it.

I have tried creating a small workflow in SPD 2007 and attaching it to the task list.  It shows that it is attached, when I look at the workflows that are attached to the task list, but I still don’t get the option to manually start it.

I have checked my security and I have fu

Workflow "Failed on Start (retrying)" when new item created by BizTalk SharePoint Adapter

We've been using the BizTalk SharePoint Adapter to load various different contents into a MOSS 2007 Document Library. The library has a Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 workflow (sequential workflow created in Designer) which starts automatically when a new item is added to the Document Library. Or, at least, it eventually starts automatically.

For some unknown reason--and this is what we're hoping some of you may have some ideas on--the workflow fails to start on the first try, producing the "Failed to Start (retrying)" message. When the timer job comes back the second time, the workflow starts successfully, but this causes us to loose five minutes of potential work time (not to mention making us look bad to the VPs and CTO because they see the failure message).

In checking the log, I find the following pair of error messages each time the "Failed to Start (retrying)" status occurs:

08/27/2007 13:49:43.24  w3wp.exe (0x0CA0)                        0x1438 Windows SharePoint Services    Workflow Infrastructure        72fs Unexpected RunWorkflow: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: <Error><CompilerError Line="1" Column="1" Text="The root activity type is invalid.&q

SharePoint 2010 Long Starting if start workflow programatically

In SharePoint 2010, I'm starting workflow #2 programatically from my workflow #1. See code below:

					SPList currentList = web.Lists[new Guid(ListId)];
					SPListItem currentListItem = currentList.GetItemById(ListItem);

					//resolve any lookup parameters
					string workflowId = base.ProcessStringField(WorkflowIdentifier);

					//find workflow association by name
					SPWorkflowAssociation workflowAssoc = currentList.WorkflowAssociations.GetAssociationByName(workflowId, Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture);

					if (workflowAssoc != null)
						//start the workflow
						SPWorkflow workflow = site.WorkflowManager.StartWorkflow(currentListItem, workflowAssoc, workflowAssoc.AssociationData, SPWorkflowRunOptions.Synchronous);

And workflow #2  will hang with Starting status (1-10 minutes), Then the workflow #2 status would be modified  to Completed.

I couldn't find how to start the workflow # 2 immediately and complete immediately without several minutes delay

Using a workflow to create a user task

Hi, we have a inforpath form that our HR Team fill out when we have a new user join the company, the form once submitted will upload to a sharepoint forms library and also put and entry in a shared calendar that the HR , Facilities and Corp IT team have access to.

what i am trying to do though is get it to create a task in a task list on the same site using some of the fields on the form to populate fields in the task list. i have used Sharepopint desginer to create the workflow and when i test it the workflow status show completed but the task never shows in the task list on the site

any ideas would be greatfully recieved

Modify User in Collect Data from User Workflow

I've created a workflow with a Collect Data from User action that emails a Group when the task is created. Once the task is claimed by an individual, the Assigned To column in the task list is updated to display that person's name but once the task is completed the email variable for the action is not updated and the group is emailed instead of the person listed as Assigned To.

So the question is this: Is there a way to update the user varialbe in the workflow task once the task is completed, or would I need to build my own workflow and use the Send Email action?

Automatic Workflow start through Excel

Dear all,

I have a SPD WF and I want to start it automatically by channging a value in a dropdown inside Excel.

Instead of going to Office button --> Workflows --> Start "Budget Approval", start the workflow by setting a value inside Excel (and maybe saving the file) to "Completed".

SPD workflow, emails sent for one user, not for the other

Good day,

I have a SPD workflow (WSS/2007) that take a date field from a document list and when that date occurs it sends an email.  If the date is in the past, it will send the email out right away.  It is working fine for one user, not for another.  Both users have the same permissions.  The workflow goes as follows:

ACTION: Set Variable: vTermdate to DocumentsNotificationDate
       then log Documents:Email Date to the workflow history list

CONDITION: if Variable: vTermdate is not Empty
ACTION: Log term not empty to the workflow history list

CONDITION: if Variable: vTermdate is Empty
ACTION: Set Variable: vTermdate to N/A

ACTION: Add 0 minutes to Documents:Email Date (out to

VS Studio WorkFlow Failed on Start in MOSS 2007 ON Windows Server 2008 64 Bit

But the workflows says Failed on start and retrying ans stops there forever says couldn't start the workflow.

I repaired .NET Framework 3.5sp1 installed

 1. I tried again, in C Prompt:  Lodctr "c:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v3.0\Windows Workflow Foundation\perfcounters.ini"  it says initiation file cannot be found

2   i again tried this C prompt Lodctr /R "c:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v3.0\Windows Workflow Foundation\perfcounters.ini"

it says reloaded  from the system restored

i am still getting the same error.

When i manually go to my  C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\Windows Workflow Foundation i can see a folder for SQL that's it nothing more than that..

I dont know what is happening i am trying it from 2 days and still no solution.

Programmatically creating a SharePoint Site based on user input

I am working on developing a “Create Website Wizard” for SharePoint 2007 that would do the following (I am simplifying a little for the sake of this post):

1.      Take user input as follows:

The category will be a choice field (radio buttons or a dropdown)

how to include a user defined table type as input for stored procedure

Storing and displaying user input (encoding query)

Hello,I've just been reading up a little on security regarding user input and how to handle html and scripts.My question is, what if I build my own CMS?Isn't it inevitable that I'll want to store html code, possibly scripts, and almost certainly apostrophes and special characters, and then display them again.What's the best way to do this, since I wont want to display the encoded html, but the html itself.Would it be to encode everything then when I want to actually display the html, decode it, but everywhere else, keep it encoded?I'm just trying to think of all the scenario's that I could come across when I accept user input where I don't know what they could be typing in.What if I WANT the user to be able to display html?Is it possible to decode only some tags but leave all other tags encoded?

How to tell if TextChanged fired in response to user input

I have a TextBox that triggers a calculation when the user types text.  I am recalculating any time that the user enters a new value by responding to the TextChanged event.  This calculation can be manually overridden. I am finding that the TextChanged event is firing during databinding, as it should, but this is blowing away the manually overridden calculation.  I used to be able to tell if the user had initiated this change by checking the Modified property in a System.Windows.Forms.TextBox. Is there a way to tell if the TextChanged event is in response to user input?  I only want my calculation to take place in response to user input and not in response to databinding or other in code changes to the Text property.
