Can't connect to SQL 2005 Enterprise using Management Studio with Server Name (only (local) works

This is a test system, everything running locally & no domains. Win 2003 Ent. Server & SQL Server 2005 Enterprise. I can't log into SQL Server Management Studio using the server name & using either Windows Authentication or SQL login. If I change the name of the server in the drop-down list to "(local)", I connect just fine (both Windows & SQL security modes). Shared Memory, Named Pipes & TCP/IP enabled in both server & client. Remote connections allowed. I have IP adresses (both 127.0.0.1 & external IP) in my hosts file pointing to the server name. Does SQL require a DNS server? This wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that I can't install SQL 2005 SP3 due to authentication failure since there's no way to enter (local) as the server name. SQL tools (management studio, SP install) seem to see the SQL server running but won't authenticate the user through any means other than setting server name to (local). This is driving me crazy!!!

Problem Integration SQL Reporting Service 2005 and SharePoint 2007

Hello, I'm trying to make our SQL Reports available on our SharePoint report center. I have SQL 2005 (sp3) report server that resides on a different server than our SharePoint 2007 server. So in our SRS Configuration Tool, we changed the database mode for SharePoint integration (before, we only had it in native mode), so we created a new database for this SharePoint Integration type. Next, I installed the Report Server Add-in for SharePoint 2007 server and it was successful. However when configuring the Report Server, we got stuck at the step "Grant Database Access". For some reason we keep getting error message "Named instance not found" We already installed Service Pack 3 on the Report Server... I heard that the problem is because the mismatched version between the Report Server Add-in in SharePoint and the SQL RS version... but I don't think this is the case for us. Do we need to install WSS on our Report Server too?     Another question: We already integrate our Report Server with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0. However I see that when the Report Server is in the SharePoint Integration mode, all the reports in CRM don't work (because Report Manager is no longer available in this mode). Do you think it would be the best practice to install a copy of Report Server instance in our SharePoint 2007 server? Thank you, greatly appreciate all your hel

SSIS 2005 - Send Mail Task - signature appended to email is garbled - unicode problem?

Hi, I'm pretty new to SSIS so go easy on me. I have a Send Mail Task to notify if a file cannot be imported - the mailbody is created on the previous step by a VB.NET script task to include the name of the file and the path it's been archived to. The problem I'm having is that while the body of the email I've created is displaying fine, our company's Exchange server appends a signature to all emails, and this is coming up as undisplayable characters, presumably due to some kind of unicode encoding problem. I've tried casting the email body in an expression to DT_STR (doesn't work as DT_STR "cannot be converted to a supported type" which seems a bit odd but never mind), DT_WSTR (garbled signature), DT_TEXT/DT_NTEXT (strange error on this one - "Attempted to read or write protected memory") none of those ideas worked, and I'm a bit stumped now. Can anyone help? I'm using SSIS 2005 with SP3

Export to CSV w/ grouping problem after 2005 upgrade

Hi,After upgrading to reporting services 2005 from 2000, reports that used to export to CSV correctly don't now. It appears the CSV export suddenly stops at a table with grouping. Any ideas would be appreciated...Thanks.

SQL 2005 Enterprise x64 install Fails

The install seems to fail when it gets to installing the tools.  SQL server services seem to be installed and running.  I can connect to the data base from another sql manager and see the databases, that they are running.    The log file does not indicate much. Here it is.   LMG-RPTDB : There was an unexpected failure during the setup wizard. You may review the setup logs and/or click the help button for more information.  SQL Server Setup failed. For more information, review the Setup log file in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt. Time            : Wed Sep 08 10:57:47 2010

Why doesn't SQL Server 2005 Enterprise always shrink a log file after a backup?

I have several databases that, despite being backed up regularly, do not release space to the operating system.  In one extreme case, I have a log file that is less than 1% utilized (and has been for months.) I know how to manually force a shrink, but I should not need to do that on any sort of regular basis.  In fact, it is against best practices to manually shrink a log file (or any database file for that matter) because of the very high risk of an unrecoverable error. It is my understanding that SQL Server will eventually handle these things on its own.  However, it does not appear to be doing so.  Any thoughts as to why? Thanks, Dave

Problem with Permissions on SQL 2005

I don't even know if my title is a fair explanation of my problem, sorry if it isn't. We are on a network using AD, probably a very typical scheme. My SQL Server is 2005 on a Server 2008 Enterprise machine. My boss had written for him a VBS which will prompt the user for the server name, then Database name and the upload a specific CVS into the proper SQL tables. As a user who is a member of the AD Administrator group, I can run the script no problems. However  the person who needs to run this script on a regular basis gets an error in a "Windows Script Host" dialog box. The error is "Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Login failed for user 'CC\maurice'." I thought it may be how the SQL drivers are setup on his machine, but when I log in through his computer, I can run the script fine. Is this a setting my SQL server, or is it actually an AD issue I am dealing with?   Thanks for reading.
