Setting up Visual Studio with a cloud based SharePoint site

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 09, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I have a SharePoint site on the cloud where I access it through a URL like this one; https://exampleemeamicrosoftonlinecom-1.sharepoint.emea.microsoftonline.com I can also edit the site with SharePoint Designer by pointing to the same URL. I'm at the stage in the project where I want to do some specific things so I am going to use Visual Studio, but I don't know how to set up Visual Studio with a cloud based SharePoint site? When I go to add a SharePoint site I get the following error; A SharePoint server is not installed on this computer. A SharePoint server must be installed to work with SharePoint projects. I also tried to add the URL as a server in Visual Studio but I get the error; Server name "https://exampleemeamicrosoftonlinecom-1.sharepoint.emea.microsoftonline.com" could not be found. Make sure the server name is correct. I have SharePoint Designer working with the SharePoint site, why won't Visual Studio work?

Session State throws error in ASP.NET Site Pages for SharePoint 2010 portal using Visual Studio 2010

I'm developing Visual Studio 2010 solution for site pages. I’ve created Site Pages in SharePoint 2010 and I’m trying to access Session variables in code behind in ASP.NET but it throws the following error.

Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. Please also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the <configuration>\<system.web>\<httpModules> section in the application configuration.

I set the page directive as enableSessionState=&quo

Is cloud based SharePoint site suitable for Intranet?

Could anyone provide some guidelines for moving to the cloud based SharePoint such as the recent offering of Office365 for enterprise users? Currently we are hosting SharePoint site ourselves and consider to move to cloud based SharePoint, but we heavily depends on custom solutions such as 3rd party solutions, web parts, in-house development using Visual Studio and SharePoint designer.

When moving to cloud based SharePoint, We expect most of these customizations will not be able to be deployed. Does this mean a real cloud based SharePoint for enterprise like us is still far the in future or may never come?
