Data That is continually updated

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 09, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net
Hi,I was asked this question in an interview and wasn't exactly sure how you would implement it. I was given a brief overview of the situation. multiple wpf applications that connect ot a wcf service and a wcf service that connects to a db.The told me the data in thew db is continually changing (and not by the WPF apps). So they asked me how I would keep the wpf apps provided with the latest data. So I am assuming there is another app e.g. windows service that is continually polling the data?Its basically I guess very similar in style to a trading application.Any thoughts would be most welcome. Thanks.

SQLXML 3.0: Build Data-Driven Web Services with Updated XML Support for SQL Server 2000

XML is becoming the ubiquitous data format on the Web, and XML support in SQL Server is evolving to meet the additional demand. Using XML, SOAP, HTTP, and SQL Server, you can now build powerful Web Services easily. To show just how simple it is with SQLXML 3.0, this article walks the reader through the process step by step, from setting up a virtual directory enabling data access via HTTP to executing queries and building Web Services. Finally, the author illustrates the creation of two Web Services clients-one with C# that works with the Microsoft .NET Framework and one with the SOAP Toolkit 2.0 for anyone still using earlier development tools.

Cube Refreshment with Data updated in Table

HI All, I have cube which is MOLAP,and i have created SSIS package to process the cube,now i want to start the job as soon as data got uploaded into the Relational database. Please guide me in this as i am new to ssas. Regards Shraddha

Capture event when data is updated

I want to capture the event when a row in a table is updated and send selected items from that row in an XML format to a HTTP interface.

My thinking of how to capture the event would be either a trigger on the table or having a separate application which maybe running on another server capture the event. If I used a trigger how do I format the selected items from the table into an XML format and send it to a HTTP interface? If I used a separate application which could be a WCF Service then how do I subscribe to the table update event as to format into XML and send to a HTTP interface is straight forward.

My preference would be to use a WCF Service as it seems to me this is more flexible and I don't have to deploy anything on the SQL Server.

lost updated data after form is closed

I have a form thru which I add new user and/or edit users list. Adding a new user is okay. Edited data is also saved with the update tableadapter.update method, but as soon as I close the form, the data is set back to the original values. (However new records are there). Data is stored on table "Users", which is part of the "Database.sdf".

Please help, how can I save/update the values for existing items.

Best way to refresh windows/controls in case relevant data has been updated

I have an application with number of screens used to edit/display data. In case any of screens is edited, all dependant screens must be refreshed. I do not want to refresh data used by screens each time they become active. I was thinking of creating an interface:

interface IRefreshable { void Resfresh() }

All child windows(=screens) will implement this interface. Once any of the screens is saved it will notify it's parent window (=main app window) what kind of data was resfreshed. Main window will permanently store list of all child windows that are affected by specific change and will resfresh them.

class Main:Form{

  private  static Dictionary<DataType, List<IRefreshable>> resfreshableDict;

  static Main()

    // initialize resfreshableDict

  public Refresh(DataType type)

    // fetch IResfreshable for the type from resfreshableDict and invoke Resfresh()

class TaxesScreen: Form, IRefreshable

  private saveData()

    // save data

    // notify parent about the change of taxes data

Retrieving changed/updated data from all tables in database

I'm looking for some advise on how I could solve the problem I face, I have various instances of sqlexpress 2005 in different remote locations which are not accessible via internet vpn etc as they are all in corporate networks that will not allow access. What I think I need to do is create some sort of process/service that can be installed on the client and run at a set time/date that collects all the data from theses instances and then push the changes to our remote instance of sql server. Can anyone possibly point me in the right direction of various technologies I should be looking into to solve this problem. All clients would be running windows XP. I have been searching for a few day's but I can't find anything to get me going. If this is not the right forum for this type of question can you suggest any?

Thank you.

How can I do it?

Binding WPF Controls to an Entity Data Model

In this interview, programming writer, McLean Schofield, demonstrates how to bind WPF controls to an entity data model, using Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1. You can also learn more in the topic: Walkthrough: Binding WPF Controls to an Entity Data Model.

Surrogate vs Natural Primary Keys - Data Modeling Mistake 2 of 10

In case you're new to the series I've compiled a list of ten data modeling mistakes that I see over and over that I'm tackling one by one. I'll be speaking about these topics at the upcoming IASA conference in October, so I'm hoping to generate some discussion to at least confirm I have well founded arguments.

The last post in this series Referential Integrity was probably less controversial than this one. After all, who can argue against enforcing referential integrity? But as obvious as surrogate keys may be to some, there is a good deal of diversity of opinion as evidenced by the fact that people continue to not use them.

Editing the Data in a GridView

In addition to deleting a GridView's underlying data, another common need is to allow end users to edit the data displayed in a GridView. With ASP.NET 1.x's DataGrid control, editing the data is certainly possible, but requires creating three event handlers and writing a dozen or so lines of code. With the GridView and ASP.NET 2.0, it is possible to create an editable GridView without writing a single line of code! All of the necessary functionality is encapsulated within the GridView.

The GridView allows editing on a row-by-row basis. An editable GridView contains an additional column with an Edit button in each row. When the end user clicks on an Edit button that row becomes editable, causing the Edit button to change to Update and Cancel buttons and the other columns to become TextBoxes. The end user can then update one or more column values and click Update to save their changes.

Using ASP.NET 3.5's ListView and DataPager Controls: Displaying Data with the ListView

Prior to ASP.NET 3.5, developers who needed to display a set of records could choose between the GridView, DataList, and Repeater controls. The GridView provides rich data features, but has a very boxy layout; the DataList and Repeater allow for a more flexible layout, but lack the "point and click" data features found in the GridView, DetailsView, and FormView controls. The ListView bridges the gap between layout flexibility and built-in data features.

This article, the first in a series of articles on the ListView and DataPager controls, looks at the ListView's many available templates and illustrates how to display data. Read on to learn more!

Dynamic Data Templates in GridView ASP.NET 3.5

At a high level, Dynamic Data Templates can be seen as a system to very quickly build up a User Interface linked with the relevant data model, immediately enabling you to perform CRUD operations (Create, Read, Update, Delete) on the database using the specified data source. They provide a powerful method for building up these kinds of applications, and I'm going to focus on an overview of what Dynamic Data Templates actually are, and a few ways of customizing them to suit industry needs.

MS SQL Server: Search All Tables, Columns & Rows For Data or Keyword Query

If you need to search your entire database for specific data, this query will come in handy.

So when a client needs a custom report or some sort of custom development using Great Plains, most of the time I will have to track down the data in the system by running this query and find the table(s) it is in.

Displaying Data using ASP.NET 2.0 Repeater and C#

This tutorial will show you how to display data using the .NET Repeater Control, ASP.NET 2.0 and C#.NET

The Repeater control is a powerful tool and is easy to use.

First, you will need to import the System.Data.SqlClient namespace.

MVC architecture in ASP.Net using C# and Microsoft Data Access Application block

The Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern separates the modeling of the domain, the presentation, and the actions based on user input into three separate classes [Burbeck92]:

Model. The model manages the behavior and data of the application domain, responds to requests for information about its state (usually from the view), and responds to instructions to change state (usually from the controller).

View. The view manages the display of information.

Controller. The controller interprets the mouse and keyboard inputs from the user, informing the model and/or the view to change as appropriate.
