Windows Service Applications Tutorials

You can easily create services by creating an application that is installed as a service. For example, suppose you want to monitor performance counter data and react to threshold values. You could write a Windows Service application that listens to the performance counter data, deploy the application, and begin collecting and analyzing data.

DataTable - Load from IDataReader - CreateDataReader - ReadXml WriteXml - Free ADO.NET Tutorials

The DataTable in ADO.NET 2.0 has been seriously beefed up and I absolutely love it. Not everything we consume deals with multiple resultsets and requires the ever popular DataSet. With the cool new features in the ADO.NET 2.0 DataTable, we can get many of the cool features in the DataSet without all the extra baggage and memory footprint particular to multiple resultsets.

Any good Approval-type workflow tutorials for VS 2010?

Greetings.  I'm looking for some good tutorials (or books) on creating SharePoint 2010 Approval workflows in Visual Studio 2010.  I've spent a few hours digging through the search results on bing/google, but almost all of the examples (including content from Microsoft) show a very simple workflow in Visual Studio 2010 that doesn't contain approval steps.  I am looking for a more comprehensive tutorial on how to build a workflow that contains approval steps and evaluates the column values (i.e. evaluate a list column  if(Total Cost > 10000)) to determine branching.  InfoPath integration is a bonus but not required.  Anyone have any good links with solid tutorials?  Thanks in advance.

display image in gridview - unlucky with tutorials

I'm trying to display images in a gridview, but after following the examples of maybe 7 different tutorials I still haven't succeded. There are always some things that go unexplained. My latest attempt is according to this tutorial:http://www.aspdotnetcodes.com/Insert_Images_Database.aspxProblem No1: what exactly should I write in my ashx-file? Following the example in the tutorial this is the code so far:<%@ WebHandler Language="C#" Class="ImageHandler" %> using System; using System.Web; using System.Configuration; using System.Data.SqlClient; public void ProcessRequest (HttpContext context) { SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection("DBPejganConnectionString1"); myConnection.Open(); string sql = "Select Image_Content, Image_Type from ImageGallery where Img_Id=@ID"; SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(sql, myConnection); cmd.Parameters.Add("@ID", SqlDbType.Int).Value = context.Request.QueryString["id"]; cmd.Prepare(); SqlDataReader dr = cmd.ExecuteReader(); dr.Read(); context.Response.ContentType = dr["BildTyp"].ToString(); context.Response.BinaryWrite((byte[])dr["BildData"]); dr.Close(); myConnection.Close(); }Please give me a hint (or rather the answer) on what's missing. The rest of the problems comes later... :)

Starting Data Access Layer Tutorials - Confusion on Database downloads

Hello.I have really enjoyed going through the Security Tutorials. They were well done and I think I learned a lot.I am just about to start the first Data Access Layer Tutorial. I am a little bit confused.I have MS SQL Server 2005 and MS Visual Studio 2005 on my laptop. The first tutorial says to download and use the Northwind database. But, the link in the tutorial goes to a MS page that says that the Northwind database is for SQL Server 2000 - although it will work with 2005. The page suggests that I use the AdventureWorks database with 2005. But, when I click on the link for that page it says that this database is now on CodePlex servers and gives me yet another link.I just want to use the right database for this tutorial. Can someone please explain to me what is the right process for this tutorial? Will I just be able to download and run the EXE for the Northwind database with what I have and immediately be able to start going throgh the tutorial? Or, will I need to make some adjustments since the Northwind DB is for SQL Server 2000? I just don't want to get something installed and then have to back out of it.Thanks.

Where can I find theme & skin libraries

Hi I'm in the process of building a webforms site. In the grand tradition of programmers, I have been looking for collections of skins/themes/css for asp.net controls to avoid the work of building them myself. Especially since I'm graphically challenged. I've found numerous sites with templates for drupal, DNN, etc but the only places I've found asp.net control themes/skin/css collections is within commercial component libs that cost more than i'm able to afford. The absence of these collections is also making me question how I'm building the site since I assume the "theme" sites would be providing these collections if there was a demand. Can anyone point me to where I can find inexpensive or free asp.net theme/skin collections or give me some pointers about how to build a site without requiring a bunch of work to create them from scratch. Thanks in advance!

Where can I find written tutorials?

I'm coming back to developing and want to refresh my skills and familiarity with the latest Vs2010/.Net 4.0 platform.

My particular focus right now is asp.net and developing a modern, data-driven (sql server) css based web site.

All I can find is videos... what happened to the writtten word?

Blogs and forum questions (especially) are helpful on individuals, but where are the well written, structured documents that you can scan for relevance and content, and work through to make sure you're in touch with the latest practices and standards?

Does msdn still offer that?

Or is it yet another £40 book to add to the library?

Tutorials on creating a "News & Comments" page please...

I'm not "new" to .Net, but it's been a long time since I've done any "real" programming and need some refresshers and/or tutorials. Specifically, I need to know what can & can't be done with the current Ajax/VB.Net controls. Here's what I am trying to do:

I need  a daily "news" space for my client to write a blog-like post on her website, and on the same page, a place for her readers to post comments. I also need to count how many comments are made and dsiplay them in the header (exactly as shown here at the bottom where comments can be added: http://www.asp.net/general/videos/lesson-8-working-with-the-gridview-and-formview)

Are there any plug-ins to allow me to easily create this type of a page with the comments table already set up? No reason to re-invent the wheel if this has already been done and there is an add-in for this. Any suggestions, tutorials, links, would be greatly appreciated. I am using VS 2010 with VB.Net, HTML & CSS.
