SQL Server 2008 Express Management Studio fails to install because it thinks visual studio is instal

I tried to install SQL Server 2008 R1 Express with Tools on Windows Server 2008 R2. It installed, but the management studio failed to install because it said I already had Visual Studio installed and it needed Visual Studio service pack 1 before Management Studio could install.

Visual Studio is nowhere to be found in Programs and Features, and when I try to install Visual Studio SP1, it won't install, saying:

A compatible version of Visual Studio 2008 was not detected on the system. This update is designed for only the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (ENU) product family, and is not compatible with any Express editions.

Though I can't find any Express version of SP1 to try, and there is no SP1 in windows update.

Can't connect to SQL Express 2008 from Visual Studio, but can connect from SQL Server Management St

I've been struggling with the following issue for 3 days:  I can access and use my SQL Express 2008R2 database flawlessly from SQL Server Management Studio.  But I can only intermittently access it from Visual Studio (ultimate edition with TF Server).  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  I mostly see the error when I try to "Update Model from Database" within my Entity framework model, or when I try to access the database from within Server Explorer.

Here is the error I see when I try to update my Entities form the Database: An error occurred while connecting to the database.  The database might be unavailable.  An exception of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException' occurred.  The error message is: 'Cannot open user default database. Login failed.  Login failed for user 'Tim-PC\Tim'.'

I think the connection string is fine as I am able to connect

How to connect to local instance of SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express ?

I just installed SQL Server 2008 Management studio Express on my Vista machine.

i tried connecting to local machine using :

.\sqlexpress, (local)\sqlexpress, or .\SQLExpress, MyPCNAME\SQLExpress

nothing is working, getting this error:

Cannot connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

SQL Server 2008 Management Studio

Been around SQL Server since 7.0 days.   In SQL Server 2008 Management Studio I don't seem to be able to display Created Date for Views. I can't really believe MS have taken this away so hence my Q.   I find it useful to see Created Data to script my recently developed View and other objects.   Robert, Edinburgh    Bob as MCSD.NET 2003

Cannot Create Database Diagrams - SQL Server 2008 Management Studio

I cannot create a database diagram with my client-side SQL Server Management Studio.  I can do this if I am on the actual db server itself.  Please help.

SQL Server 2008 Management Studio - Summary Windows.

I am using SQL Server 2008 (10.0.1600), now came across an issue to display Summary Windows but unfortunately found that F7 (Keyboard shortcut to display summary window) is not working and even Summary windows is not available in View Menu of SQL Server Management Studio. Maybe it’s a minor issue but I failed to find solution. Thanks (in advance) for the help.

Can not connect to user instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services in Visual Studio 2

I used SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services (not SQL Server 2008 Express) in Visual Studio 2010 because it is the fast and easy way to developed and managed data-driven applications with powerful built-in reporting and full-text search functionality. I received Sql Server 2008 Service Pack 1 with Windows Update. It's ok if I connect to instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services (with SP1) through SQL Server Management, but if I try to attach a database in Server Explorer (Visual Studio 2010), I get the following error: "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I'm stuck at this point. Is there a fix or a workaround? I've already tried deleting the 'C:\Users\Administrtor\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS' directory as mentioned in other posts, with no luck. SQL server management studio 2008 freezes when running a query to Grid result

Hello, I've got problems when I run a Query to a grid result using SQL server management studio 2008 under W7 pro. When I execute the query, the first part of the grid returns, but then it freezes. The query should present a double resultset and contains approx 6100 records, devided over 2 grids. Strange enough, the query runs fine when I export to TXT or to a file. It seems though that the problem is building the grid. When it occurs I cannot end the application bij shutting down de SSMS window, but have to kill the Ssms.exe. In task manager I see only 25% CPU usage and approx 20% memory usage. Nothing exiting there I guess. Suggestions anybody? Visual Studio 2010 Lab Environment for Student to deploy to a IIS 7.5 web server with SQL 2008

Currently the environment I am trying to create is a teaching lab for Visual Studio 2010 and ASP.NET website development. The intent is to setup an environment where students can create a website with an attached database written with the assistance of Visual Studio 2010. When the website is completed they need to use one of the Visual Studio deploy technologies to upload the website to a locally run server (Windows 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5 running and SQL Server 2008.) I am responsible for setting up the correct deploy technology in Visual Studio as well as setting up the IIS 7.5 deployment server that is running the right version of SQL Server. I have already started this process and figured out how to configure a deployment package in visual studio and have it published on our local server. I am trying to get a very streamlined environment that does not require students have to configure a lot of SQL strings and IIS settings because this is not really what the teaching lab is all about. Just to let you know, we have had  this exact setup using Visual Studio 2008, Server 2003 with front page server extensions on IIS 6.0 and SQL Server Compact edition running on the server. My issue is that since it is now time to update everything there does not seem to be something comparable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If someone has an idea of the

How to start SQL Server 2005 (Visual Studio 2008)

I am just starting to work with Visual Studio 2008 (VB) to creat WPF apps and am trying to work with sql server. I want to create databases on my computer to be used with single client applications. When I try to see if the server is running it doesn't appear to be. Is there some special process that I need to do to start the server so I can create some sample databases to work with in Visual Studio? Working with Windows XP, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005.

Visual Studio 2008 Asp.net Development Server Launches When use local IIS is project option

I have a visual studio 2008 asp.net MVC webapp project.  The project is set to use local IIS WebServer. When I run without debugging, it runs just fine.  However when i run with debugging Visual studio launches the Asp.net Development Server on top of IIS.  I would not care if it wasnt for the fact that any time i make a web request to the MVC Site it seems to be creating duplicate requests resulting in a very painful debugging experience. Thanks,Giovanni

Getting Sql Server Management Studio 2008 installed on local computer

Hello, I have been trying to figure out this problem for a while now so hopefully someone can help me out - I would really appreciate it! Right now I have SQl Server Management Studio2005 installed on my computer for a SQL sever that we have. We recently got a 2008 sql server and if I remotely access the server, I can see that SQL Management Studio 2008 has been isntalled on the new server. I need to build new databases but need SQL Management Studio 2008 on my computer and I have no idea how to get it. I have a "Microsoft SQl Server 2008 R2" folder on my computer, and I have already tried clicking on "Configuration Tools" and then "SQL Server Installation center" and it isntalls a bunch of things, but none of them are "SQL Server Management Studio 2008."  I also found a link on a Microsoft website that says it's SQL Server Management studio 2008 R2 but it was just the same bunch of programs I already downloaded. How do I install Sql Server Managment Studio 2008 on my computer?! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
