Cannot start SQL Server 2005

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 08, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
Hi;I've been using SQL Server 2005 on vista and everything was fine until today. I cannot start the SQL Server service from the services list; it gives the error "Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) on Local Computer....., and refer to service-specific error code -2146885628.". I looked at the evet log; the first error message is "FallBack certificate initialization failed with error code 1." then an information message: "Unable to initialize SSL encryption because a valid certificate could not be found, and it is not possible to create a self-signed certificate.".I've created many test certificates till now (to test WCF services security features) using makecert.exe and nothing went wrong; the last certificate I made was named "localhost"; so I thought there's a problem because of that; I deleted that certificate but still cannot start SQL Server.Any help is appreciated. Thanks-AA

How to start SQL Server 2005 (Visual Studio 2008)

I am just starting to work with Visual Studio 2008 (VB) to creat WPF apps and am trying to work with sql server. I want to create databases on my computer to be used with single client applications. When I try to see if the server is running it doesn't appear to be. Is there some special process that I need to do to start the server so I can create some sample databases to work with in Visual Studio? Working with Windows XP, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005.

The SQL Server(2005 express) service failed to start. Error 29503

Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition -- Error 29503. The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
The error is  (1067) The process terminated unexpectedly.

Initially the SQL Server was running over there, later one day it stopped. When trying to start manually I got "The process terminated unexpectedly" error. Tthen I uninstalled it and tried to install again, but got "Error 29503. The SQL Server service failed to start" error while installation and installation rolled back. If I install it using Local System and without "Enable User Instance" I get same error but after multiple retry it started. However my desktop application is not running and giving error message "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure process for the user instance. The connection will be closed".

I tried "sp_Configure .......... " and "Reconfigure" to enable user instance but still got "Failed to generate......" error.

Another problem is that SQL Server service starts in multiple retry.

I have tried most of the forum solutions however I am still getting the same error in my desktop application. Mos

I went through the whole log but I couldnt figure out anything in this. Can anyone help us out trying to figure out whats wrong by checking this below.

Server 2005 won't start - get 1814 error

I am not a database guy, but am trying to get this issue resolved.  Yesterday I got a call that nobody could connect to our databases.  I checked the services and saw that the SQL server service wasn't running, and when I tried to start it manually, I'm getting a 1814 error.

I did see that trying a sqlservr -f might shed some light on the problem, so I've attached the output of that.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be most grateful.....

SQL server 2005 cluster - second node - sql service will not start - node is showing down in cluster

I am tryng to get the second node in a two node cluster to start sql services and come up in the cluster.  The second node was configured and running in a cluster when at some point, the sql service and/or cluster service went down.  Now the node will not start...as in SQL service fails and the system log error is:

"The disk associated with cluster disk resource 'Disk Q:' could not be found. The expected signature of the disk was BF17D33C. If the disk was removed from the server cluster, the resource should be deleted. If the disk was replaced, the resource must be deleted and created again in order to bring the disk online. If the disk has not been removed or replaced, it may be inaccessible at this time because it is reserved by another server cluster node."

and the Application log shows:

Error 2(The system cannot find the file specified.) occurred while opening file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' to obtain configuration information at startup. An invalid startup option might have caused the error. Verify your startup options, and correct or remove them if necessary.

I had to edit the startup parameters on the second node because it appears it cannot "see" the original path, which was a network driv

SQL Server 2005 fails to start after install on Server 2008 R2 SP1 64-bit

New install of Server 2008 R2 64-bit upgraded to SP1.

I have SQL Server 2005, no matter how I install it, it fails to start the main SQL Service giving me the error:

"The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually.""

It then rolls back just that portion of the install and completes the install. I thought the following article might be the ticket, but no matter which SQL Server 2005 SP I try this with or which method they describe (reducing processor count, etc), I get the same error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954835/en-us

Is it SP1 on Server 2008 R2 that is the problem? I have found various articles online speaking of pretty much the same issue, but these are posted before SP1 and people seem to be able to get things working.

Any thoughts?

Cannot start SSIS of SQL Server 2005 9.00.1399.

The SSIS of SQL Server 2005 (9.00.1399) cannot be started.  I suspect that some files in the DTS\BINN may not be the right version.  The MsDtsSrvr.exe has product version 9.00.3042.  How to troubleshoot/correct this type of problem?

SQL Server 2005 Try and Catch Exception Handling

I'm pretty excited to see that there is some real error handling for T-SQL code in SQL Server 2005. It's pretty painful to have your wonderfully architected .NET solution tainted by less-than-VBScript error handling for stored procedures in the database. The big difference being the addition of TRY..CATCH blocks. Let's take a look:
