Speed SQL: Tuning Your Database Calls with Tier Interaction Profiling

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

Tier interaction profiling (TIP) is a feature of the Visual Studio profiling tools that measures the duration of synchronous calls to ADO.NET-compliant data stores. We'll show you how TIP works and provide some best practices for using TIP to diagnose performance problems in your apps.

Performance tuning tips for database developers

Performance tuning is not easy and there aren't any silver bullets, but you can go a surprisingly long way with a few basic guidelines.

In theory, performance tuning is done by a DBA. But in practice, the DBA is not going to have time to scrutinize every change made to a stored procedure. Learning to do basic tuning might save you from reworking code late in the game.

Below is my list of the top 15 things I believe developers should do as a matter of course to tune performance when coding. These are the low hanging fruit of SQL Server performance - they are easy to do and often have a substantial impact. Doing these won't guarantee lightening fast performance, but it won't be slow either.

Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning (exit code: -1073741819). (DTAClient)

Hello,This is the first time I am using this forum. I am stuck and need some help. I received this error message both on SQL 2005 and 2008. I am currently using SQL 2008 DEV for testing purposes and I am experiencing this error message when trying to connect to Database Engine Tuning Advisor. I am using the SA account so I should not have any security issues. Also this is a fresh install of SQL 2008 DEV on a fresh install of Windows XP Pro with all SP. Can some please help.Error:"Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning (exit code: -1073741819). Database Tuning Advisor, Stored Procedure with datetime parameters, syntax error

I receive these error(s) in the Tuning Log. I have several stored procedures and they all use a datetime parameter.

E000    exec <some sproc name> ''2009-01-01 00:00:00:000'',''2010-09-30 00:00:00:000'',N'',N'',NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL         1    [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Incorrect syntax near '2009'.

I am using SQL 2005. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Reece

database tuning

hi,

After nearly  8 month (of current financial year) of lots of working in my database ,it is now taking long time to respond even to  a simple query.

Here is what i have tried to tune the database response time.

1.shrinking of database

2.defragment of  hdd where .mdf and .ldf  reside

3..rebuilding of  indexes

4.deletion of temporary tables.

What else i can do to achieve the quickest response time from the database

plz  suggest me the way and correct me if something wrong in the above list.

Thanks n Regards

Database engine tuning advisor - statistics

This is a two part question:

First, is the primary reason DTA suggests new statistics because it generates multi-column stats whereas autoupdate stats only computes single-column ones?  Or is that because the current statistics are out of date (i.e. if you ran sp_updatestats first, would DTA then not need to recommend any?)

Second, is it fair to say that if you have a multi-column index, you should manually create a multi-column statistic to go along with it?

Multiple database support with Entity Framework

One of the features introduced in Entity Framework is being database independent. Which mean each database provider can support Entity Framework by implementing its provider.

This feature allows you build applications independent from the underplaying database provider. In this post I'm going to show how to build an application that support multiple databases using same conceptual model made by Entity Framework.

Export Visio Database Table Names to Excel

If you use the Enterprise Architect edition of Microsoft Visio for data modeling regularly, then there is a good chance that at some point you've wanted to export just the table names into Excel. You might want to do this to map logical ERD entities to physical data model tables, track project status by entity, or track overlap between database versions.

MS SQL Server: Disconnect Users From Database - Kill User Session

If you ever wanted to restore your database from a SQL backup file (.bak), but there are still users connected to your database, the backup operation will fail causing the error: Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use.

Publishing SQL Server Database using Publishing Wizard : Tips & Tricks

We can use SQL Server Publishing Wizard to deploy our local Database to remote hosting server/production server. This feature is available in SQL Server 2008/VWD 2008.

Below is the complete step by step guide of this process.

Three Tier Architecture with ASP.NET

ASP.NET supports layered architecture, and this article will illustrate how it can work with the ASP.NET presentation controls. This article focuses mainly on the GridView control, mostly because it is prevalently used in .NET development. However, the concepts work for other controls as well.

Adding Rows in GridView without using a Database

This article describes on how to add rows in GridView without using a database. Basically the GridView will be populated with data based on the values entered in the TextBox on Button Click and retain the GridView data on post back.

Adding Multiple Columns and Rows in GridView without using a Database

This article describes on how to add multiple columns and rows in GridView without using a database. Basically the GridView will be populated with data based on the values entered in each TextBoxes on Button Click and retain the GridView data on post back.

3-tier architecture in C# sample

This article discusses and implements 3-tier architecture using C# and a dummy customer using MS Access database. In this article I am trying to implement a small reusable component that maintains customers in 3-tier architecture. It shows how to add, update and find customer details.

Three Tier Architecture with ASP.NET

In my previous two articles, we talked about the use of layers, and the many different options that can be used to develop layered architecture. Layered architectures are essentially objects and work in object-oriented environments, such as ASP.NET. ASP.NET supports layered architecture, and this article will illustrate how it can work with the ASP.NET presentation controls. This article focuses mainly on the GridView control, mostly because it is prevalently used in .NET development. However, the concepts work for other controls as well.

Three Tier Architecture in ASP.NET

These layers are described below.

1. Application layer or Business layer
2. Business layer
a. Property layer(Sub layer of business layer)
3. data layer

Advantages of three Tier Architecture.

Logic behind N -Tier Application Development

In the arena of application development, developers all over the world use various programming languages, technical processes, and technical tools. While using number of technical & non technical elements the processes or methods become complex, for simplification of the application development process, developers use various techniques such as dividing the application architecture into layers or parts. In the professional & technical language this separation or division process is called N-Tier Application Development process, where "N" stands for number and "tire" stands for layers or parts.

Building a 3-Tier App with Silverlight 3, .NET RIA Services, and Azure Table Storage

Silverlight 3, .NET RIA Services, and Windows Azure Services Platform makes a 3-tier Cloud application easier to build: Silverlight 3 as presentation tier, .NET RIA services as the business logic and data access tier, and Windows Azure Table as the data storage tier. The sample application in this article demonstrates the architecture with a simple Survey application with all these technologies working together from Windows Azure.
