sql server 2008 cluster multi instance

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 07, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

we have a cluster with 2 nodes and we are thinking to add another instance so that node 1 takes care of instance 1 and node 2 takes care of instance 2, and at anytime they are watching each other's back. How is this done???? what is the procedure? thanks.

named instance sql server 2008 install on cluster

I have a production two-node cluster with sql server 2008 sp1 cu7 running over windows server 2008 sp2. If I were to install a new named instance on this live environment, would it impair the default sql server instance functionality? I'm not referring to processor/io while the install is in progress. My question specifically is would the install process by its nature bring down the default instance. I'm pretty sure it won't, but don't see any documentation that would confirm this. thanks.

I just installed SQL Server 2008 Management studio Express on my Vista machine.

Can not connect to user instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services in Visual Studio 2

I used SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services (not SQL Server 2008 Express) in Visual Studio 2010 because it is the fast and easy way to developed and managed data-driven applications with powerful built-in reporting and full-text search functionality. I received Sql Server 2008 Service Pack 1 with Windows Update. It's ok if I connect to instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services (with SP1) through SQL Server Management, but if I try to attach a database in Server Explorer (Visual Studio 2010), I get the following error: "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I'm stuck at this point. Is there a fix or a workaround? I've already tried deleting the 'C:\Users\Administrtor\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS' directory as mentioned in other posts, with no luck. The error.log at 'C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS\error.log' has the following relevant entries: 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server      Error: 17156, Severity: 16, State: 1. 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server      initeventlog: Could not initiate the EventLog Service for the key '3677F6D3-17C7-4F', last error code is 2. 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server &

SQL server 2008 failover cluster install

Hello all, Looking for the definitive answer with supporting documentation (link). Does a SQL server 2008 cluster have to be installed as or run as a domain service account or can local accounts be used?  I looked for a document that stated yes or no and could not find one. If anyone can provide info it would be much appreciated. Have all ready looked at these 2 links of interest. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx#Service_SID http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731002(WS.10).aspx Thanks in advance,

Rebooting one Instance on a SQL 2008 Server with multiple instances installed

Hello, Hoping someone can answer the following questions ... If I have SQL Server 2008 with multiple Named Instances configured on it, can I reboot one Named Instance without rebooting any of the other Named Instances, or without having to reboot the entire server ? For example, if I have an application that needs to be re-booted and it requires the Database to be re-booted. Regards, JD

SQL Server 2008 side -by-side installation in Cluster w2k3 sp2.

Hi  I am ready with In-Place and went to Sr.DBA Manager, He rejected and he want 100% Database guarantee and 100% safe, down time does not matter for him and recommended me go a head with Side by Side. 1.If detach Database from SQL2k and attach to SQL2k8,I don't think  it is possible to attach back...is it correct 2. Is it required Create new cluster group for SQL2k8? 3. In 2 case what are the cluster groups I have to Create 4. Is it required to change connecting string from application? 5. If it is where i have to modify the connecting string in application level or in Database server level? 6. What are the settings can I take care after installing new sql server instance?  7. Is it required new virtual instance name for new installation (Instance)? 8.Is there any way to use existing virtual instance name for New instance?(so I belive no Need to change connecting string in application) 10.Is it possible to change instance name?(Old instance name to some other name and new instance name as existing instance name).  SNIVAS

The SQL Server failover cluster instance name 'Server02' already exists as a clustered resource. S

Hello, I have a node of 2 servers of Win 2008 R2 Enterprise and trying to install a 2nd instance in a SQL 2008 R2 Cluster. I had SQL_INSTANCE2 previously installed that I removed from the two nodes. Now when I attempt to install it again from scratch, in setup GUI where I specify the SQL Server Network Name and enter the previously entered name "Server02", I get a failure in the setup with the following error message: "The SQL Server failover cluster instance name 'Server02' already exists as a clustered resource. Specify a different failover cluster instance name." How do I fix this problem, I don't want to enter a new name like "Server03" in order to proceed with the setup, because when I do enter "Server03" the setup does continue without an error message. So what am I missing? Do I have to ask the DNS administrator to see if there's an A record for "Server03" and have him delete it so that the setup works? Or the fix is by doing something else? I would appreciate any help. Thank you

PERFMON: Cannot see SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit instance counters from remote machine

Hi, I have 2 machines X and Y. I am using X machine to run perfmon which will remote connect to Y machine and collect the counters for Y machine. I am surprised to see that I am not able to see the counters for SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit when I remote connect the perfmon on X machine to Y machine. However, when I directly log in to Y machine and open perfmon, I can see the counters for SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit !! What is not allowing me to see those counters while connecting remotely? I have same adminstrator rights on both machine for my login and use same login details to log into both machines. Both machiens X and Y are in same network and same domain. Any help will be appreciated.

Server 2008 R2 - SQL 2008 R2 Cluster - Planning

Hey SQL Experts, I'm in the planning time for a Server 2008R2/SQL 2008 R2 Cluster. As far as I know, the SQL 2008R2 Cluster is based on the cluster functions of Server 2008R2, right? Is it right to say (view on licenses): - for a sql cluster (2 nodes) you need server 2008R2 Enterprise licenses under it? -sql server 2008r2 enterprise license is only required, when I want to build a sql cluster bigger than 2 nodes, right? so on: -I know the active/passive cluster for failover, but is there a possibility to use a active/active cluster for loadbalancing/performace improves? (and failover, too? in case of failover, I know the performance in a Active/Active cluster will be bad...) -I need for every cluster functions (related to sql) a shared storage under the server, right?   Thanks for your help! regards, Tim      Thanks, regards, tim

SQL server 2008R2 install on a server 2008 R2 failover cluster. Other resources won't failover to o

As the subject says, I've built a fresh install w2k8r2 and sql2k8r2 failover cluster. Sql works fine on the primary node, but when I test a failover it breaks. Specifically, if I were to stop the node1 cluster service (causing the cluster to switch to node2), windows changes the cluster DNS appropriatly and moves the shared storage just fine, but sql server doesn't failover.  Server Name, Disk Drives and Other Resources all go offline. I've verified that the advanced policies of the server name, IP, cluster drives all have both nodes checked as possible owners However, Other resources only lists node1 as a possible owner and there appears to be no way to add node2.  Under the Other resources, SQL Server and SQL Server Agent are listed. I'm sorta stumped, I've been combing the forums and have found similar issues, but nothing seems to explain why the two resources won't failover.

Hi, Am trying to cluster 2 SQL servers in Active/Active (multinode). All the references so far points to Active/Passive clustering using the installation wizard. Can some one help me with the detailed steps to be performed to achieve the same? SQL version: 2008 OS: Windows server 2008 SP2Thanks & Regards, Hari
