Performance Issue on SQL 2008 Box

Will SSRS and SSIS running on the same machine would hinders the perfromance of a database engine. 1. If so to what extent? 2. How do you tackle this kind of issue. 3. Is there a way you can separate these services from running on the same machine. The machine also has a OLTP database running on it.

Word Automation Issue in Windows Server 2008 Hosting

Hi,

The problem I am posting here is that I was facing nearly 2 weeks around. Any body comes with this stuff please help.

Word Automation in sample ASP.NET(C#) application.

I am using Microsoft.Office.Inetrop.Word Assembly for automation. Here I am reading a XXX.dot template file and fill the contents with dynamic data.

When i am executing my code in localhost:someportnumber the automation is working fine and I could get expected result and when I am hosting in my inetmgr(Windows XP is my OS) it is also working fine.

But the problem is that when I am hosting in my production server(Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition) I am not able to perform automation and results in the following error.

Data: System.Collections.ListDictionaryInternal
Message: Word has encountered a problem.
Source: Microsoft Word

The code gets failed in the following line:

ApplicationClass wordApp = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.ApplicationClass();

Document wordDoc = wordApp.Documents.Add(ref oTemplate, ref oFalse, ref oMissing, ref oMissing); // Error in this line

I cannot able to proceed further. Can anybody please help me in solving this issue?

Thank you.

With Regards,

Ashok

Oracle Linked serve Query performance in 2000 vs 2008 R2 64 Bit

Hi everyone We have started to migrate one of our reporting systems from Sql 2000 to Sql 2008 R2.  One of the steps has been to test the perforance of certain Oracle linked server queries between each server.  We are finding on average 3 fold better perforance stats (in terms of query completion time) on the old server.  This should obviously not be the case.  The new server has signifantly more CPU/Memory/IO resources to play with, and it is 64 bit (not to mention its new!).  Here's what I got so far: Old server: SQL 2000 on W2000 both fully patched.  Old Dell Dual core with 3 GB of Ram running on two soft IDE Mirrored drives (yes I know... it sucks).  It connecting via the MS OLE DB provider for Oracle (9i client) New server: ESX VMware Server with 2 CPU's assigned, 8 GB of ram connected to large HP SAN.  CPU, ram and IO's have all been ruled out as the problem.  We've tried varying network cards with different results so we havent ruled that out yet.  Its connecting via the Oracle provider for OLE DB (11G 64 bit client) The linked server is an Oracle 9i fully patched server.  All three are on the same network backbone. Running a simple select * query on both servers returns the same number of rows (~76 000) .  It takes ~1:20 on the new server and ~0:20 on the old server. In looking at the wait stati

SQL Server 2008 Installation issue in Windows 7 64 bit

I'm trying to install SQL 2008, but an error message keeps appearing: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installation has failed. SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed.   My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits, so already has de .NET Framework 3.5, I turned on/off a lot of times and the same error occurs! I download the .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 from the links: (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6&displaylang=en http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en) But, when installing the Framework 3.5 or the SP1, I get the message: "Use turn on or off disable features in Windows control panel".   Someone can help me?! - Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits - SQL Server 2008 Developer (x86, x64, ia64).   Thanks! Help!!!! Permission issue with Analysis Services on Windows 2008 R2

Hi I'm with a project using Sql Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2. It seems I can not connect to Analysis Services server with SA acount but only with Windows Authentication (The 'Authentication' option is diabled). And when I connect to Analysis Services with my windows acount , I do not have the permission to either create a database (ERROR:Either '***' user does not have the permission to create a new object, or the object does not exist) or grant server privilege to my windows account (ERROR: Only an administrator can make changes to server properties). Also, I failed to remote connect to Analysis Services on Server with my windows account (But I can remote connect to Database engine). Any idea?  Thanks!

SQL Server 2008 Linked Server SELECT INTO issue

I have a SQL Server 2008 installation running on a clustered Windows Server 2008 R2. I am trying to execute a query on a remote SQL Server to create a table. In order to do so, I call a stored procedure on the remote SQL Server. The stored procedure's description is as follows: ------------------------------------- Create procedure [dbo].[USP_RemoteExec] @varSQL varchar(max) as declare @tempSql nvarchar(max); set @tempSql = CONVERT(nvarchar(max),@varSQL); exec sp_executesql @tempSql ------------------------------------- I pass the following command to the remote stored procedure as follows: exec [servername].[dbname].dbo.USP_RemoteExecute @varSQL='if object_id(''testdb.dbo.tmp_testEmpty3'') is not null drop table testdb.dbo.tmp_testEmpty3; create table testdb.dbo.tmp_testempty3(col1 int, col2 varchar(20));' go select * from [servername].testdb.dbo.tmp_testEmpty3 go This statement returns the following: --------------------------------- col1,col2 (0 row(s) affected) But, when I run the following statement: exec [servername].[dbname].dbo.USP_RemoteExecute @varSQL='if object_id(''testdb.dbo.tmp_testEmpty'') is not null drop table testdb.dbo.tmp_testEmpty; select * into testdb.dbo.tmp_testEmpty from (select top 10 mytab.[col1] as [col1] , mytab.[col2] as [col2] , mytab.[col3] as [col3] FROM testdb.dbo.mytab as [mytab] with (nolock)) as A' go select * from [

SSRS 2008 R2 Add-in Performance Issues

I have a very interesting issue with a customer.  They use lots of images in their reports.  The report performance is very poor after deploying the report to Sharepoint Integrated Mode and executing the report from Sharepoint Report Viewer.   The single server is setup with SQL Server 2008 R2.  Sharepoint and Reporting Services are running all on the same server.    The goal is to be able to use the Report Viewer Web Part and Sharepoint Filters to create Dashboards.   We have tried the following ways to get satisfactory performance out of these reports:  ·         When we run the reports in a page viewer web part in Sharepoint against a native SQL 2008 Report Manager on another server, they execute great ·         When we run the reports in a page viewer web part in Sharepoint against the Sharepoint Integrated Report server on same server, they execute way more quickly then when using the Report Viewer against the same Sharepoint Integrated Report server . ·         When we remove the images from the reports  and execute the reports via report viewer or in the Integrated library they execute satisfactorily in both Report Manager and Sharepoint Integrated - but th

SSRS 2008 R2 Rendering Performance

I am implementing a matrix report in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2.  There are about 37 rows and 10 columns where each cell has an Indicator graphic (so about 370 cells).  The report shows loading for a few seconds but then freezes for about 2-3 minutes before the report pops up. Other matrix reports without the indicators seem to render just fine. Is there some way to improve the performance of reports such as these with many indicators in each cell?

Issue in SMO DB transfer from SQL 2005 EE to SQL 2008 EE SP1

Hi All, I am transferring DB from SQL Server 2005 EE to SQL 2008 EE SP1 using SQL Server SMO. I am using the TransferData method of Transfer object. I am facing a problem where it creates the DB on 2008 instance but does not create any table, view and procedures. This is not getting reproduced every time. The error that caught in code reads below:   ERROR : errorCode=-1073548784 description=Executing the query "CREATE TABLE [dbo].[table1]( [ParamKe..." failed with the following error: "The log for database 'sadb20052008' is not available. Check the event log for related error messages. Resolve any errors and restart the database.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly. helpFile= helpContext=0 idofInterfaceWithError={C81DFC5A-3B22-4DA3-BD3B-10BF861A7F9C} For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.   I checked the SQL Server logs and it is reading as below. I enabled the deadlock logging by setting the SQL Server service startup parameters to -T1204, -T1205, -T3605 and found the log as given below. How can I debug it to find the root cause and resolve it?   2010-04-06 16:50:28.31 spid7s Deadlock encountered .... Printing deadlock information 201

Express 2008 R2 performance dire on VM vs Physical Machine

Like a lamb to the slaughter we upgraded a 2005 Express VM to 2008 R2 at first it seemed fine, then the users compained of poor performance. The database was now above 4GB so no going back. Performance was degrading, we noted the VM only had 512 ram, reconfiguered to 3GB and the machine ground to a halt  Literally - more than 1 user could not log on. A simple query would MAX the processor to 100% for 2 or 3 seconds. No stored proceedure was a standout as a bad performer. Only one user could log in at a time. All indexes were rebuilt (took 4 hours!) still unusable performance. Move the machine to a single processor xp with 2GB ram and 8 users can now log on simutaneously CPU bumps along at 5-20%. Is SQL 2008 R2 Express a no no on VMware? Should we recommend against SQL 2008 R2 upgrades?

SQLSERVER 2008 to SQL SERVER 2008 R2 REPORTS MIGRATION ISSUE?

Hi All, Yesterday we installed SQLSERVER 2008 R2 in our development mechine , and already it have Microsoft TFS 2008. When i open my report project it came up with the upgrade messagebox i clicked on Yes.And i try to run the reports locally its giving me exception like "An attempt has been made to  use the data extention 'custom datasource extention 1.2' that is eaither not registered for this report server or is not supported in this edition of reporting services'.So i did the changes like adding the dlls into the reportserver bin and added the data block which i have configured for SSRS 2008 i have applied the same setting for the SSRS 2008 R2 but still i am gettign the same exception do we need to do any changes in SSRS 2008 R2. because i am able to run the reports sucessuflly in SSRS 2008 but not SSRS 2008 R2? Any body have ideas on this. Thanks, Veeren.

SQL Server 2008 performance: Decision to spend budget to upgrade to enterprise edition

Hi, Currently, we use SQL Server 2008 standard edition. We are planning to improve the performance of our application. The application is built by 3rd party and we can’t change/modify database objects and they seem to be designed fine. The options are spending our budget to upgrade to sql server hardware, or upgrade to SQL Server Enterprise edition. I am a bit confused over the benefits of SQL Server Enterprise edition. The following chart suggests that SQL EE includes “Parallel Index Operations” and “Enhanced Read-ahead and Scan”: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/editions-compare.aspx  How significant are “Parallel Index Operations” and “Enhanced Read-ahead and Scan”? Considering the fact that new hardware is cheaper than sql enterprise license, Should I spend budget to upgrade enterprise edition instead of buying as server with faster CPU and RAM? Thank you, Max

SSRS 2008 Conditional Column Visibility Whitespace Issue

Hi Everyone,I am using IIF statements to show/hide tablix columns based upon a parameter value. These statements are used as expressions in the visibility properties for the columns. If the parameter value is one that causes the column to be hidden, the coulmn does not appear on the report, but there is whitespace in its place.I have used this functionality very frequently in SSRS 2005 without the whitespace issue. The 2005 report automagically closed this whitespace up by moving the column to the right of the hidden one to now be adjacent to the column to the left of the hidden one at rendering. This is what i need to happen now in 2008.Has anyone else experienced this? If so, would you please share your solution? I am getting extremely frustrated by this...Thanks!!
