Hyphens in domain names get trimmed from account names in user profiles

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 07, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
We've been trying to launch an internal deployment of SharePoint 2010 MySites but we've run in to a problem with the user profile import. We've reviewed all of the relevant guidance and have been able to complete an import successfully, but all of the characters before a hyphen in our domain name are getting truncated from the imported username. To illustrate:   PREFIX-BLAH\tristan.watkins becomes BLAH\tristan.watkins after it is imported. When I log in, a new user profile is created for PREFIX-BLAH\tristan.watkins and all of the imported profile data is useless, since it is associated with a non-existent BLAH\tristan.watkins.   I'm assuming this is an issue with the beta version of Forefront Identity Manager 2010 that shipped with SharePoint 2010 beta, but I can't find any information suggesting this is a known issue and for all I know it may actually be a SharePoint issue rather than a problem with FIM. For what it's worth, this was not a problem in SharePoint 2007. Can anyone help?

User Profile Synchronization, checking if NetBIOS Domain Names was enabled.

After multiple tries I finally got User Profile Synchronization setup... or so I thought.  I was down to the very last step of starting the sync...when I start the synchronization it never starts and the status remains "Idle".  The timer job is not giving me very helpful information and is reporting "Generic Error".

I had fallowed two separate articles.  I did the Enable NetBIOS domain names but I am unsure which example I did it from or if it took.  Is there a way to check this?  Is there any harm in running it again?  Do I have to restart anything to pick up the changes?

Thank you very much for any information.

During Install get "No mapping between account names and security IDs" error when picking domain acc

Test environment with 2008 servers set up from an image I've taken of a win 2008 r2 sp1 server. I restore that image to a vmware virtual machine, set up a domain controller and added the service accounts I'm going to use later for my sql 2008 r2 install.

Then I take the same image, restore it to another new virtual machine, rename it, give it a new ip address, reboot, join it to the domain, reboot, and begin the SQL install.

On the Server Configuration step, when I click the account name drop down and pick <<browse...>> It opens the "select user, computer, or group" dialog and I enter in [domain]\[login] for the service account and click "check names". It resolves that into the "[login] ([login]@[FQDN])" line. I click ok.

I get the "S-1-5-XX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-1104: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done." error.

The frustrating part is if I create a new virtual machine win 2008 r2 server from scratch and start the SQL install and use the same login, no error and I can continue with the install.

I'm stuck, can I not create images and use them in this manner?

The specified user account "domain\username" is a local account. Local accounts should only be used

Issues with updating Lists with Manager Names and User Profile Imports in SharePoint 2010 Server

I am having a curious problem with SharePoint 2010 Server. I have imported all the user profiles of our organization into SharePoint User Profile Service Application from our Active Directory. When the Manager name imports it comes in as domain/login. The organizational browser seems to work for MOST people, but not all. I believe this is contributing to my second problem, which is, I have setup a very simple workflow in SharePoint Designer that simply looks up the persons Manager, then places that information into a field called "Approval 1". After that it looks at Approval 1 and get the Manager name and populated "Approval 2" with that information, and so on. I have used an Impersonation Step as the Farm Administrator in the workflow and I have done it without the impersonation step. Both results in the same problem. When I enter my name into the list and run the workflow it runs beautifully give every manager up the chain to the top. However, if I put any other person's name in there it gives me the error "Workflow failed to get user profile for user: ____". I went to my supervisor's office and asked him to run the workflow. Using his login he had the exact same result--if my name was in there it worked great, otherwise, it gave an error. Any help with this strange error would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

User Profile Synchronization: Name of user account / id uses wrong Netbios domain name?!

I've got an interesting situation: I've got a domain e.g. FOOBAR.FI. The Netbios domain is due to historical reasons BARFOO. When I use UPS to import accounts from the FOOBAR.FI domain, the user account names in SharePoint are given the id of FOOBAR\<useraccount>. This works so and so. Users are identified and My Sites is fine. However the organizational chart and other fields where you can specify another user don't work as they should. If the manager is specified from AD, the organizational chart works. However, if I edit a profile and check the manager, it's in the form of FOOBAR\<useraccount>. SharePoint highlights this and a tooltip says that the account cannot be found. As a suggestion, it gives BARFOO\<useraccount>, which is found from the AD. All fine and dandy, until you check the organizational chart, which turns out to be empty at this point. This is because in SharePoint there's no user with the name BARFOO\<useraccount>, but only those FOOBAR\<useraccount> users who've been imported from the AD. So bottom line question is: How does UPS select and set the user account name?

Adding user names when updating gridView

Hi All,May be this is a begineers question, could someone help on this please?I'm using a windwos authentication via intranet. I'm able to display the username in a label control on a page load event (which is very simple). I'm not storing this data anywhere in the table (MS SQL). I have all my data in a table and I'm using a gridview to diplay them. I'm using a button control to update all the rows in the gridview. I wanted to update three columns in the gridview (1. Tickbox, 2.Datetime Stamp and 3.UserId).I've created a query in the dataset, through which i can update the Tickbox and DateTime stamp using now() function. But I'm not sure how to update the UserID field with the UserName (which inturn updates all the three fields in the gridview when the button is pressed.

User Profile working, but domain in the Account Name field is incorrect

Profile import is working with a small set of users from just one OU. The synchronization connection has a Forest Name of "corp.mycompany.com", just like in our current profile settings in MOSS 07.

However, the user profiles created are listed with "corp" as the domain, not "mycompany".

E.g. my profile Account Name shows "corp\eriehl", but it should be "mycompany\eriehl".

How do I update this reserved property to contain the correct value for our domain?

Resolve AD names to Display names in SharepointDesigner Workflow emails for multiple user field

Is there a way I can resolve multiple users in a "People and Group" field to thier display name rather than Ad name in sharepoint when doing a designer workflow . The workflows job is send the mail to the business owners and request request that a certain permission be granted to User A, UserB, User C,...and so on.

SPD activities Linktitle action to my understanding only resolves a single user.

Working with User Names and Roles in Silverlight Applications

Security is a key component of applications and something that developers often struggle with to get right. How do you authenticate a user? How do you integrate roles and use them to show or hide different parts of a screen? These and other questions commonly come up as I talk with developers working on ASP.NET and Silverlight applications.

I was recently presenting a workshop on Silverlight at the DevConnections conference in Orlando and had a question from the audience on how I handle security roles in Silverlight applications. Since I had just implemented a security mechanism for a customer I gave a brief response but didn't have a sample application available to share to point people in the right direction. After the workshop was over I put together a sample application to demonstrate one potential approach for accessing user names and roles. I'll walk through the sample application in this post and highlight the key components.

The goal of the post isn't to dictate how to authenticate users since every application has unique requirements. However, I will discuss general techniques for accessing user names and working with roles to block access to views and show or hide controls.

Security Techniques

Silverlight applications can take advantage of Windows and Forms authentication techniques and can integrate user roles in

Export Visio Database Table Names to Excel

If you use the Enterprise Architect edition of Microsoft Visio for data modeling regularly, then there is a good chance that at some point you've wanted to export just the table names into Excel. You might want to do this to map logical ERD entities to physical data model tables, track project status by entity, or track overlap between database versions.

dynamically change column names in Crystal reports

I need to develop 3 pages.

On the first page user defines atmost 7 column names to be displayed on the report. I'm saving these names in a Sql DB table 'Columns' with Column_Nm and Column_ID as Table columns.

On the second page I'm retrieving column_Nm from the table and displaying them on the page so that the user enters the data. This data is saved in another table 'Summary' with the Columns column1 through column7.

on the 3rd page I need to show a report of 'Summary' table.

How do I dynamically replace column1 through column7 names with that of 'Column_Nm' on the report?

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
