Custom Entity Framework template and access to the database type

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 07, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

First and foremost ... I already made a few changes in the template, the most important one changing the methods generated for stored procedures with OUTPUT parameters and no resultset so that instead of instantiating a few OutputParameter objects, passing them to the method and extracting the values (all without any type checking) you just call the method with a few "out someType?" parameters so I do not need the very basics. I am totally confused by all those GlobalItem, EdmProperty, BuiltInTypeKind, TypeUsage and all this made of objects, all alike and all different though so as soon as I need more data than what's already used by the template I run into problems :-(What I would like is to change the WritePrimitiveTypeProperty() so that it outputs [StringLength(xxx)]  for all char, varchar, nchar and nvarchar properties. But I can't find a way to get from an EdmProperty in the model to the database type in the store. Can anyone help me?In case anyone is interested here's the modified stored procedure mapping code for the template. The first code replaces the original in the .tt: //////// //////// Write EntityContainer and ObjectContext Function Import methods. //////// region.Begin(GetResourceString("Template_RegionFunctionImports")); foreach (EdmFunction edmFunction in container.FunctionIm

Multiple database support with Entity Framework

One of the features introduced in Entity Framework is being database independent. Which mean each database provider can support Entity Framework by implementing its provider.

This feature allows you build applications independent from the underplaying database provider. In this post I'm going to show how to build an application that support multiple databases using same conceptual model made by Entity Framework.

Data Points: Deny Table Access to the Entity Framework Without Causing a Mutiny

Julie Lerman shows database administrators how to limit access to databases from the Entity Framework by allowing it to work only with views and stored procedures instead of tables-without impacting application code or alienating developers.

SOA Data Access: Flexible Data Access With LINQ To SQL And The Entity Framework

Building a data access layer using LINQ to SQL and the ADO.NET Entity Framework allows you to decouple your application from the persistence technology you're using.

ADO.NET: Building a Custom Data Provider for Use with the .NET Data Access Framework

The System.Data.dll assembly in the .NET Framework contains namespaces whose base classes can be used to create custom data providers. These namespaces also define a number of data access interfaces and base classes that let developers create data providers that will interoperate with other custom providers. Using the ADO.NET classes Connection, Command, DataReader, and DataAdapter, writing a provider is easier than writing one for OLE DB. This article explains these classes and their implementation, and how they can be used to write a variety of different kinds of data providers.

Errors in the back-end database access module. OLE DB reported an overflow of the data type for colu

Getting an error when processing a dimension, Errors in the back-end database access module. OLE DB reported an overflow of the data type for column 0. Errors in the OLAP storage engine: An error occurred while the 'xxxxxx' attribute of the 'Dim XXXXXX' dimension from the 'XXXXXXX' database was being processed. Content of this dimension is very similar to one that is processing no problem. The content of the dimension is one field only of type date.  The original content was imported through SSIS from a DB2 database on an iseries machine.  Thought a first the issue was because of the data contains some null values but the dimension the process OK also has some null  values.  The dimension that processes ok is also a single field of type date. Any help greatly appreciated, Roscoe

Update Database Schema without redeployment in Entity Framework

Hello. we build an app with 2 layers i.e the presentation and the Business layer which holds the business logic and have the entity framework provide us wtih entities. my question here is is there a way we can change the database schema and not have to redeploy the app to the client.

Access database with help of entity

Hello Everyone,

I am slightly new to this part of .Net and I will need your help.

There is a framework in Java known as JPA/Hibernate which uses classes to map tables of databases. I want to know can we achieve the same result in .Net. I think that is possible through ORM but I am not very much sure how to use it.

Can anyone please explain me with an example.

Thanks in advance

Databinding of WPF DataGrid with database via ADO.NET Entity framework

I develop WPF 4.0 desktop-based application that has to work with SQL Server database. In order to connect database with my GUI WPF-application I decided to use ADO.Net Entity Framework. I made edmx-connection, all works as expected, I see the structure of my DB in model browser.

After that in WinWorkers.xaml.cs I wrote basic LINQ-query that returns all data from tbl_users and I put it to IBindingList, here is a code fragment:
//databinding with database via LINQ query
IBindingList users = ((from d in App.glidusContext.tbl_users
            select new { d.userID, d.userName, d.userPassword }
          ) as IListSource).GetList() as IBindingList;

In order to show this data I chose to use DataGrid control inside of XAML-code, here is a code fragment of that:
<!--databinded content from database-->
<DataGrid

Could not establish connection database. ASP.NET Membership and Entity Framework

Ok, so this is my first Solution using the Entity Framework (EF). Here are my steps so far:

1) Created Database named: BSA with an owner of username/password (AspNetServicesUser/password)
2) Created Entity Data Model (EDM) in a separate project (contained within the same solution)
3) Created an ASP.NET Web Application with basic functionality (new project within the same solution)
4) Added Reference to the EDM in Web App and added Connection String to the EF
5) Decided I wanted ASP.NET Membership added to the Web App
6) Configured SQL Server for Application Services using aspnet_regsql.exe on BSA database

Now, I need to know:
a) Should I keep the ASP.NET Membership Tables in a Separate DB altogether?
b) Should I update the EDM to include the ASP.NET Membership Tables?
c) Then, how do I create the connectionString for the Web.config file in the WebApp?

FYI: I get this error using the ASP.NET Configuration Tool under the "Security" Tab:
Login failed for user 'AspNetServicesUser'.

FYI: I get this error using the ASP.NET Configuration Tool under the "Provider" Tab --> Select a single provider for all site management data --> Test
Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the

Custom document library list template issues with custom content type

Either I don't know what SharePoint is doing or I don't know what I'm doing (or both, which is more likely).

I'm attempting to create a Custom Document Library template with a custom content type association (Custom Document), all using a feature. When I create
a document library based on the installed template, the content type association is there. However, when I click on New Custom Document, the template.dotx does not reflect the Custom Document content type association. The Word document information panel does not show any Custom Document content type properties (like Title and Comments).

Here are the steps I've taken:

1. Create the feature.xml with element manifests of contentType.xml and CustomDocumentLibrary.xml
2. Create the contentType.xml (Custom Document) with an additional field reference for Comments
3. Create the CustomDocumentLibrary.xml for the list template
4. Create a Custom Document Library subfolder that contains the same files that are in the 12\TEMPLATE\FEATURES\DocumentLibrary\doclib folder.
5. Edit the schema.xml to use the new content type and field reference
6. Deploy and activate the feature
7. Create a new "Custom Document Library"
8. Go to Custom Document Library Settings and verify the Custom Document content type is being used
9. Click on New Custom D

Missing Entity Framework Template in Visual Studio ASP.NET 4.0

I just installed Visual Studio 2010 on my Windows 7 laptop in order to start learning the Entity Framework.  For some reason that I haven't been able to figure out, when I try to add a new item, there is no template for the ADO.NET Entity Framework.   Can anyone offer me any help as to why the template doesn't exist and what I need to do in order to get the template?

Thanks

ps. I came across a post that stated that in order restore the template that I needed to do the following:

 devenv /installvstemplates

This didn't help.

How to get the value from a in a wizard? (custom entity template)

I have a question about the Dynamic Data API... trying to figure out how to get the value the user entered in an <asp:DynamicControl> that's in a different wizard step.

I am using an <asp:Wizard> as the entity template for one of my tables.  This works well so far...I basically hijacked the Finish button of the wizard and make changed CommandName="Update" or CommandName="Insert" instead of the wizard default command, so that the finish command will be treated as the update or insert command of the entity template.  I also added <asp:DynamicControl>'s in the different steps for all of my fields which works nicely because I don't have to have custom code for each field.  This works very well and my records are edited and inserted successfully.

But I'm a bit puzzled about how to make the preview step ... I would need to look up the values that the user entered in the <asp:DynamicControl>'s in the previous steps, and I'm not sure how to do that.  Seems like the process of getting values from those fields is taken care of automatically when I edit or insert records and I'm not sure if there's a way to get the values manually.

Anyway I'll be investigating this today so I'll report back if I find an answer... thanks in advance!

Access report server database connection information from custom security extension

Hi,

Is there any way from my custom security extension that I can get to and unencrypt the database connection information held within the RSReportServer.config file?

Cheers,
