Partition sql server 2008

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 06, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
I am designing database for fleet management system. I will be getting n number of records every 3 seconds. Obviously, there will be millions of record in my table where I am going to store current Information of vehicle in the current_location table. Here performance is an BIG issue. To solve this, I received the following suggestions: Create an septate table for each vehicle. Here a table will be created at a run time as as soon as I click on create new table. And all the data related to perticular table will be inserted and retrive from that perticular table Go for partition. Please answer the following questions about these solutions. What is difference between the two? Which is best and why? At what point will the number of rows in the tables cause performance issues? Are there any other solutions? Now ---if I go for range partition in sql server 2008 what should i do to, partition useing varchar(20). i am planning to do partition based on vehicle no.eg MH30 q 1234. Here In vehicle no. lets say mh30 q 1234--only 30 & q going to change....so my question is HOW SHOULD I GO. means how should write the partition function.

SQL Server 2008 - Alter Table Switch Statement Fails Where Partition Key Defined as a Persisted Comp

Here's a very annoying and poorly (or undocumented) issue in SQL Server 2008 Ent. Ed. post-SP1, CU8:

When creating a table with a persisted computed column as the clustered primary and partitioning key (see below), where the computation includes a call to CONVERT, watch out for the representation of this calculation on sys.computed_columns.  The query parser will modify the definition at table creation to insert a default style parameter of "(0)", if no other style is specified.  If the original definition did not include any style parameter and you later attempt to programmatically recreate the table using the stored definition contained on sys.computed_columns, the query optimizer will throw an error when you then attempt to switch partitions from the original table into the new programmatically created table, as follows:

Msg 4966, Level 16, State 1, Line 72

ALTER TABLE SWITCH statement failed. Computed column '%' defined as '%' in table %' is different from the same column in table %' defined as '%'.

This is so, eventhough the two definitions are completely functionally equivalent, considering the default value of the style parameter.  This can cause a lot of headaches, because correcting the problem requires dropping and rebuilding the computed column with a definition that include

Partition set up in transactional replication SQL Server 2008

Currently The partition strategy with switching works fine on a non replication enviornment. But I know there any few steps that needed to be considered before setting transaction replication.
I know we have to set 'allow_partition_switch' and replicate_partition_switch to true on the publication.
Inspite of setting them my replication fails while doing partition slide saying 'The <archived table> is not found'.
Any help is appreciated

Seven reasons to care about SQL Server 2008 R2

Microsoft begins to fully realize its vision of SQL Server as an information platform and not "just" a database. Hence the main theme for this release -- at least according to Microsoft -- is self-service BI. The PowerPivot plug-ins for Excel 2010 and SharePoint 2010 are easily going to make the biggest splash of all the new features, not least because they're the most complete. But then, SQL Server 2008 R2 isn't strictly necessary for PowerPivot for Excel, which works with plenty of other data sources.

sql server 2008 adventureworks database

dear Friends

For my MCTS 70 -433 examination, I recently installed sql server 2008 and installed the sample databases too. but my issue is, in that book they have mentioned a database called "AdventureWorks2008" and the nice thing is I don't have a such a database with me in my sql server 2008.

And the query is

-- MERGE Statement
USE AdventureWorks2008
MERGE INTO	Sales.SalesOrderDetailHistory AS SODH
USING Sales.SalesOrderDetail AS SOD
ON SODH.SalesOrderID = SOD.SalesOrderID
AND SODH.SalesOrderDetailID = SOD.SalesOrderDetailID
INSERT (LineTotal, SalesOrderID, SalesOrderDetailID, CarrierTrackingNumber, OrderQty
, ProductID, SpecialOfferID, UnitPrice, UnitPriceDiscount
, rowguid, ModifiedDate, Cancelled)
VALUES(LineTotal, SalesOrderID, SalesOrderDetailID, CarrierTrackingNumber, OrderQty
, ProductID, SpecialOfferID, UnitPrice, UnitPriceDiscount
, rowguid, ModifiedDate, DEFAULT)
UPDATE SET SOHD.Cancelled = 'True'
OUTPUT $action , inserted.* ;

Please help me to overcome this issue and let me know where can I download that database too.

Thanking you

happy Coding

Word Automation Issue in Windows Server 2008 Hosting

The problem I am posting here is that I was facing nearly 2 weeks around. Any body comes with this stuff please help.

Word Automation in sample ASP.NET(C#) application.

I am using Microsoft.Office.Inetrop.Word Assembly for automation. Here I am reading a XXX.dot template file and fill the contents with dynamic data.

When i am executing my code in localhost:someportnumber the automation is working fine and I could get expected result and when I am hosting in my inetmgr(Windows XP is my OS) it is also working fine.

But the problem is that when I am hosting in my production server(Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition) I am not able to perform automation and results in the following error.

Data: System.Collections.ListDictionaryInternal
Message: Word has encountered a problem.
Source: Microsoft Word

The code gets failed in the following line:

ApplicationClass wordApp = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.ApplicationClass();

Document wordDoc = wordApp.Documents.Add(ref oTemplate, ref oFalse, ref oMissing, ref oMissing); // Error in this line

I cannot able to proceed further. Can anybody please help me in solving this issue?

Thank you.

No ASPNET User in Windows Server 2008?

I have been looking everywhere online regarding this, but have not found a clear answer.

I have an ASP.Net app running on Windows Server 2008, it's basically a reporting app using Crystal Reports. I have encountered a roadblock in regards to rendering some pages. When I run the app in Visual Studio(on the same 2008 machine) everything works perfectly. Yet when I publish it and run it live the reports will not display correctly, I get a message saying Failed to render page.

I looked this error up in the Crystal Reports website and the fixes they have there refer to giving the windows "aspnet" user full access rights to certain folders on the machine. I would be happy to do this, however there is no aspnet user in Windows Server 2008.

I installed the server and set its role to be Web Server. I also checked all the options regarding ASP.Net and IIS 6 compatibility. Yet there is no ASPNET username anywhere.

Did I set the server up wrong? or do I have to do something within ASP.Net to  create this user and then give it rights?

Not working on Windows Server 2008

I had the CSS friendly adapters working great on our old server (windows server 2003 - 32bit) and now we have moved to a 64 bit environment and now I can not get the CSS friendly adapters to work.

We are using SharePoint 2007.

Is there another work thru for 64bit environment.

I notice windows server 2008 has a directory  C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64 would I be using the browser file in this directory???

Please help!

Under the Table: Programming with FileStreams in SQL Server 2008

There's always been disagreement about whether large blobs, such as document and multimedia items, should be stored in the database or file system. In SQL Server 2008 you don't have to choose; filestream storage provides the best of both approaches.

Problem opening dotnet 1.1 projet on 2008 web server

We recently upgraded to a 2008 development web server and I installed all the stuff to get dot net 1.1 app working on the server.  I can host them and they work.  My problem is that when I try to open one in VS 2003 I get the following error.  I set up the web server the same as my previous one, and I think a long time  ago I got this error when we set up current one but do not remember how to resolve it.  So I moved my project files from the old server to the new server and then I get these errors.

The web Server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the Web Project located at the following url: Http://localhost:/MobTracker. 'Http/1.1 500 server error
