Migrate an ASP.NET application to SharePoint

We have a requirement where we need to migrate an existing ASP.NET application to SharePoint(MOSS 2007). The current ASP.NET application uses different BAL and DAL layers to talk to backend systems, there around 300 dynamic pages for different kind of forms and to display data from backend, 100 static aspx pages, around 20 user contorls. It also uses the a custom build javascript library for AJAX functioanlity.

Whats should be startgies to migrate a typical ASP.NET 2.0 application to MOSS 2007 portal?

This is what I thought of:
  1. Convert all the dynamic ASPX pages to Web Parts(WPs). Should I do this or use the existing aspx pages in sharepoint, i.e. copying the exising aspx pages in _layout folder
  2. Use the same BAL and DAL components without any change. Should I write wrapper components for exisitng BAL & DAL components and use the wrapper components in SharePoint application?

How to move or migrate document library with all data from one web application to another web applic

Script to migrate content from one sharepoint We application to another sharepoint Web Application

Hello Everybody,

I have a requirement where in I will have to move content from one web app to another web app in the same far. Well this migration process has to be automated and scheduled at midnight everyday.

My thoughts for this requirement are:

1. Have a batch script scheduled. And basically this script is gary lapointe extensions where in it will copy the content from one list to another list.

2. have a Workflow running at background (this is tedious and I am convinced by this approach)

3. Content Deployment path in central admin

Can somebody suggest me a better approach for this or if any of the above approaches are correct then let me know pros and cons of that method.

thanks in advance

Migrate Sharepoint 2007 DB to 64-bit Windows Application Error

Hi All,

I am in the process of migrating my companies MOSS environment to 64bit.

I am following the directions on the technet article here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd622865(office.12).aspx

Phase 1 of the plan is to migrate the databases to their new server first.

I have followed the given instructions, and all databases are on the new server (and deleted off the old) but something in Sharepoint is still pointing to the old SQL server. On the application servers, I am getting the following windows event every few seconds:

Cannot connect to SQL Server. SOMSQL01\MOSSTEST not found. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

Central Admin also says that the SQL server is the old one. I know that it is actually using the new server because the old server has been switched off and all the sites are still functioning correctly.

Central Admin also shows that the main database server is still the old one, but has the new one listed under Operations - Servers in Farm.

Trying to remove the old server using the 'Remove Server' link under Operations - Servers in Farm simply reloa

Microsoft's Collaborative Application Markup Language (CAML) Loop

discovered an interesting error recently while working with Microsoft's Collaborative Application Markup Language (CAML) that, surprisingly, had received no ink. Partly what surprises me about this is that the error may require you to rewrite large sections of your code if you haven't previously considered this SharePoint limitation. I'll start with some context, but first of all the error is:

Integrating a Legacy Web Application in SharePoint

This month we will continue with the theme of deploying Microsoft's SharePoint as a company intranet by describing a method for integrating a legacy Web application inside a SharePoint site.

In many companies the intranet site is not just a home page with announcements. It houses Web applications used by many different departments. In last month's article, I built a page to search the employee table in Northwind (the sample database included in Microsoft's SQL Server). This month, I will move the Web pages used to add/remove records from the table into the SharePoint intranet.

MVC architecture in ASP.Net using C# and Microsoft Data Access Application block

The Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern separates the modeling of the domain, the presentation, and the actions based on user input into three separate classes [Burbeck92]:

Model. The model manages the behavior and data of the application domain, responds to requests for information about its state (usually from the view), and responds to instructions to change state (usually from the controller).

View. The view manages the display of information.

Controller. The controller interprets the mouse and keyboard inputs from the user, informing the model and/or the view to change as appropriate.

High-Performance .NET Application Development & Architecture

It has always been a goal of project architects to plan an effective strategy from the ground up in regards to an new application. All relevant factors are taken into consideration with respect to the application, from its design and layout to a functional website infrastructure. Pre-.NET strategies and design guidelines still effective now were developed with Microsoft's DNA (Distributed interNet Application) platform. This model successfully served the purpose of architecting N(any number of)-Tier (levels) applications. In its basic sense, as in most robust, distributed applications, you'll architect 3 main layers or Tiers: presentation, business rules and data access.

Application architecture in asp .net

Application Architecture is the most important process of developing a good application. Some people tends to jump into coding without any architecture laid. Later we see those people changing the architecture and finally the application had to be developed from the scratch with the correct architecture.

In this article I will describe some details about how you can improve the architecture of you application. This article is targeted to the beginner's audience.

Improving Application Performance in .Net

Application performance has always been a concern for Web Application developers. This article contains guidelines and tips for maximizing application performance in ASP.NET.

Logic behind N -Tier Application Development

In the arena of application development, developers all over the world use various programming languages, technical processes, and technical tools. While using number of technical & non technical elements the processes or methods become complex, for simplification of the application development process, developers use various techniques such as dividing the application architecture into layers or parts. In the professional & technical language this separation or division process is called N-Tier Application Development process, where "N" stands for number and "tire" stands for layers or parts.

How to create 3 tier application using LINQ

As you know that in 3 tier architecture there are three layers

User interface layer. (Is our Form in Windows application and .aspx page in Web application)
Data Access layer. (Which provides interface between Business logic layer and Database)
Business Logic layer.(Which stores your application logic)

Using Lightbox in an ASP.NET Application

The article describes Lightbox as, "... a simple, unobtrusive script used to overlay images on the current page." It delivers a nice, professional looking method for displaying images as overlays through the use of hyperlinks.

Solidify Your C# Application Architecture with Design Patterns

design pattern can solve many problems by providing a framework for building an application. Design patterns, which make the design process cleaner and more efficient, are especially well-suited for use in C# development because it is an object-oriented language. Existing design patterns make good templates for your objects, allowing you to build software faster. This article describes several popular design patterns you can use in your own applications, including the singleton, the decorator, the composite, and the state classes, which can improve the extensibility of your applications and the reuse of your objects.

Application Architecture in Windows Forms 2.0

Applications have special support in Windows Forms. For starters, you can manage and tailor your application's lifetime, and, when the work flow is disrupted by an unhandled exception, you can choose from several methods of response. Then, there are several application models that you can employ, including Single Document Interface (SDI) and Multiple Document Interface (MDI) applications, each of which can support either multiple-instance or single-instance mode, the former the VS05 default and the latter requiring special consideration. All applications, however, can discover and use a wide variety of information about the system and environment they execute in.

Application Architecture in Windows Forms 2.0-Single-MDI Applications

Consider an MDI application like Microsoft Excel; files opened from the file system (by double-clicking) are all opened as separate child windows within the parent Excel window.7 For the first instance of an MDI application to open a new child window to display the file that was passed to the second instance of the application, the second instance must be able to communicate with the initial instance.
