Marshalling Your Data: Efficient Data Transfer Techniques Using COM and Windows 2000

The way you choose to transfer data is vitally important in a distributed application. Windows 2000 provides several new features that allow you to transfer data more efficiently. Lightweight handlers allow you to write smart proxies that can cache results and perform buffered reads and writes, minimizing the number of network calls. Windows 2000 also allows you to use pipe interfaces to transfer large amounts of data efficiently through a read-ahead facility. This article illustrates several ways to improve data transfer in Windows 2000 using these new features. It also reports the results of transfer time tests and provides recommendations for transferred buffer sizes.

Windows 7, IIS 7.5 and VS2010: can't edit global.asax

Hey and thanks!

As the subject line notes the software in use, anyone have an idea why I can't edit global.asax in VS2010 (being ran with the 'run as administrator' advanced property check box checked)?  The file properties in explorer show local machine admins have full control (I am in that category) and also that IIS has windows auth enabled for the default web site.  What is this other level of security on here that I'm missing?  I can edit web.config, vb files and general aspx files with no problem--just the global.asax file causing a headache...

Using WCF unable to transfer bulk data in windows base application

Hi, I am testing bulk data transfer over WCF service and my project structure is as follows. Project Structure: 1> One Console application that have the WCF service reside of it. 2> One Class library that contain the interface and a class file that implement the interface. 3> Another Windows Application type project act as a client interface that call the service using proxy. Now the scenario I have is as follows: 1> Inside of the console application their is a module that have the (following server side code) .This service is hosted in the Console app programmatically (No config file). Server Code: Dim x As New NetTcpBinding(SecurityMode.None)         With x             .TransactionFlow = False             .TransferMode = TransferMode.Streamed             .MaxReceivedMessageSize = Integer.MaxValue             .CloseTimeout = New TimeSpan(0, 10000, 0)             .OpenTimeout = New TimeSpan(0, 10000, 0)             .ReceiveTimeout = New TimeSpan(0, 10000, 0)       &n

Import Word docs with Metadata into SharePoint 2010 from Windows Server 2003

I need to import 700 Word docs (2003 & 2007) from Windows Server 2003 into a SharePoint Server 2010 library.  I only have a test server to work with right now and want to do as much pre-work before we launch the actual server.

My goal: When we launch the shpt server, import all docs into a library so that columns propagate with metatdata automatically.

I'm not sure what the best approach is...

Can I can open each doc and add custom properties (maybe with InfoPath) to import as metadata, then import managed metadata through the term store tool and have it associate with the manually entered custom properties? I don't fully understand managed metadata, which might pose a problem.  And before I start importing terms, I thought I should find out if I've completely misunderstood how taxonomies work.

Or I have an excel spreadsheet with info about each doc in columns that can act as metadata. I could upload this as a list then associate each doc with the list.  But it seems wiser to enter the metadata into the documets.

Is it possible to update my docs in advance so that uploading goes smoothly? I have help now for data entry that I won't have later.

I have no resources to spend on tools, and have to figure out and build this&nbs

Live audio-video streaming in an asp.net website using windows media encoder

The project is to provide the facility of providing live lectures in an intranet. So the bandwidth is not an issue. Also it means that I cannot use any internet streaming server like ustream (the project being limited to intranet).

I created a C# console application and successfully created a live stream using windows media encoder sdk. I was also able to capture the stream on another LAN PC in VLC player.

I want to know if I can implement this in my asp.net website. It should be something like this : The faculty visits the site and clicks on a start button on a webpage. This will start the live stream of the faculty. It will be received by the students on different computers by accessing the same website. Also, the faculty should be able to view himself on the webpage (just like in the windows media encoder predefined UI).

Is this possible to implement in the website? I mean both the facutly and the student will implement the same website. Also, the stream has to pass via a streaming server.

Or do I need to create a different application to start streaming and the students will view the stream from the website?

Also, which player do I embed to view the stream? Windows media player (I heard that it has issues with firefox) or the ever-available flash player? Will the flash player be able to capture the media encoder stream?

I am developing VB .Net application in Visual Studio 2008(64bit), SQL Server 2008(64bit) and Windows Server 2008(64bit) environment.

I need to import an Excel and Flat files data into SQL Server database using SQL Query. I tried a lot with the following SQL Queries directly with SQL Server Management Studio,

1. SELECT * INTO dbo.ExcelImportTest FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=D:\PTPLDCT\DCT Test Datasource\DCT_Excel_Test_Sample_1.xls',
'select * from [Sheet1$]')

While executing i got an error as below,

Msg 7403, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" has not been registered.

2. I have also tried with MSDASQL provider,

Select * from openrowset('MSDASQL','Driver={Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls)};
Dbq=DCT_Excel_Test_Sample_1.xls;DefaultDir=D:\PTPLDCT\DCT Test Datasource\', 'Select * from [Sheet1$]')

Then i encountered the following error,

OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified".
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)".

3. Finally i have tried the Query with Linked Server,

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = '

C#, sockets, Windows and port 21 : A simple Client-server using TCP; connection dies after transfer

I have a thread on Stackoverflow here:

In short:

In a very VERY simple Client-Server solution the TCP connection dies after sending 65535 bytes. This only happens when I am connected on port 21. If I change the server port to for example port 22 the connection does not die.

I am posting the simple code here for reference.

Panasonic HDC-SD100 MTS to FCP Converter - Edit HD Video from SD Card

I shot videos with Panasonic HDC-SD100 HD camera in AVCHD format. As the version 7 of FCP is unable to import .mts except for straight from the camera, I need to find the solution of converting all .mts footage to FCP 7 compatible HD format. While looking for solution, I also notice that some FCP users may also face the Log & Transfer problem that even the camera is connected to Apple computer, as the camera does not show up at the Log & Transfer window.

Finally, I get Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac to convert .mts (AVCHD) files for use with NLE like FCP and Avid. It helps me handle videos directly from camera SD card without camera connected to Mac and the output HD videos from converter work great on my FCP 7. Unable to import from Excel on 64-bit Win 7 workstation to a 32-bit Windows 2003 Server running SQL

I recently moved from Windows XP to Windows 7 on my primary workstation, and since then I'm unable to import from Excel to SQL from any of my SSIS scripts when I run them Locally.  The one instance I'm running into now is importing from Excel 2010 on my system (64-bit Windows 7) to SQL Server 2008 running on 32-bit Windows Server 2003.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (RTM) - 10.0.1600.22 (Intel X86)   Jul  9 2008 14:43:34   Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation  Standard Edition on Windows NT 5.2 <X86> (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

I even tried creating the import through SSMS and saving it as an SSIS script to get the same results.  The only thing I can think of is the change of architecture on my workstation.  I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 and the server is 32-bit Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2008.  Below is the Validation text SSIS returns:

Validation has started
