Data Deployment: Streamline Your Database Setup Process with a Custom Installer

Database setup can be a tough and time-consuming process and sometimes fall victim to human error. Microsoft Installer or InstallShield can help, as can your own custom installer. In this article, the author tackles one approach to writing database installers and demonstrates the process with a working code sample.

setup/deployment issues

I have built an installation (MSI) for a project I'm designing. I'm using Visual Studio 2008.  Mostly it works fine; however, I have two issues:

1) for some reason, it insists on installing .NET 3.5, even though all the projects within the install use .NET 2.0. Is this because the installer requires 3.5? If so, I guess I can live with it.

2) I want one of the programs to run on startup, and actually, it does. I assigned the Primary Output of the program to the User's startup folder. HOwever, the install also copies the .config file to startup; so it launches it notepad, leaving the user looking at a config file they obviously shouldn't be seeing.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance...

BDC deployment failing because Identifier1 cannot be found

I am trying to create a BDC Model in VS 2010. I started with the VS 2010 template "Business Data Connectivity Model". I changed Entity1 to Products and its Identifier to ProductID. Then in the BDC Explorer changed the ReadItem and ReadList methods to reflect these changes including changing Identifier1 to ProductID. web setup project failing

I am trying to create a web setup project for a web service.  When I run the installer, I get an "Installation Incomplete" dialog that says: "The installer was interrupted before ... could be installed.  You need to restart the installer to try again."  Any ideas on what is causing this or how to fix it? Thanks!

Reporting Services Deployment Failing

Hi, I am deploying Data Sources & RDLs on SharePoint 2010 and SSRS 2008 r2. I am using 2 box deployment with SharePoint FE and SQL Server 2008 r2 BE with Reporting Services Installed. I have created and given the permissions to sharepoint groups and databases on the Reporting Server Instance. I am using .net utility using sharepoint dlls that deploy the data sources on rdl. If i have SharePoint + BE on the same box deployment works fine. When i have 2 box deployment i am getting the following error in the reporting service log. ERROR: Error when calling GetSPItemMetaData on path: http://iposerver/Reporting/Sales_DW20.rdl library!ReportServer_0-1!804!09/15/2010-14:03:13:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.SharePointException: , Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.SharePointException: Report Server has encountered a SharePoint error. ---> System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range.    at Microsoft.SharePoint.Library.SPRequestInternalClass.GetMetadataForUrl(String bstrUrl, Int32 METADATAFLAGS, Guid& pgListId, Int32& plItemId, Int32& plType, Object& pvarFileOrFolder)    at Microsoft.SharePoint.Library.SPRequest.GetMetadataForUrl(String bstrUrl, Int32 METADATAFLAGS, Guid& pgListId, Int32& plItemId, Int32& plType, Object& pvarFileOrFolder) &nb

Failing Connection String Environmental Variable, XML Variable, System Variable (SQL Server) Setup

We attempted to implement the Chapter 2 Framework from the Knight, Vermeen, Moss, Hackney book on SSIS 2008: Problem Design Solution. We see a couple of problem areas (at least) in our interpretation of the guidelines from the book.

1. We are attempting to have one connection string per server: dev/prod

2. We have set up environmental variables per server: dev/prod

3. We have set up XML Package Variables per server: dev/prod

4. We have set up System Variables per server in SQL Server: dev/prod

Problem 1:

We've had to manually key in the common connection string to all packages on a server environment in the component properties area (control flow; not data flow--ok there)

Shouldn't the connection property find the connection that we've instantiated and provide us with a pull down to select it?

The components are un-editable after we select the common connection string, but they still run properly in our SQL Server Agent Job.

Problem 2:

The dev server variable overlays the prod server variable information duringprod component editing

We are'nt sure if these problems are related.

Here is our package variable:

Here is our DTSconfig file; we have a few variations of this that we've tried.

Difficulties with the .NET Famework Setup and Deployment

The Background: Some 2 years ago (Sep-Nov 2008) I downloaded  some .NET packages and the "2008 .NET Framework SDK QuickStart Configuration Details"suite. At that time, I had already the SP1,SP2 and SP3 installed. And then an illnes forced me to suspend all my computer activities, untill now.  A couple of month ago, I started  my computer activities by trying to activate the "2008 .NET Framework SDK QuickStart Configuration Details" until I reached a point where, according to the Installment requirements, I was directed to install the IIS that Is required by the .NET Framework. At some stage during the installation of the IIS package, the procedure stopped, indicating an error  while tryinf to load some .dll programs from a SP. The Question: I saw that there exists a new "2010.NET Framework SDK QuickStart Configuration Details"suite. Should I abamdon to try to correct the error that the "2008" package is causing and download the more updated "2010" hoping that it will behave better, or remain with the tricky "2008" ? . In that case I will reconstruct exactly the error and report it to you. can you help please. hotlub1.

Setup & Deployment In Visual Studio 2005.

I am using Visual Studio 2005. i have created setup, and installed it successfully.

Now if i run it again it give messageBox =  Another Version Of this product is already installed.Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove on the Control Panel.

But I want, if the is product is already installed, then it shoule uninstall and install new setup.

Or if product already installed it should tell user that product is already installed. If u want to install it first uninstall it and then run setup again.

How to achive that.

Please tell me if anybody knows.

Thanks in Advance.

How to setup a Mobile Browser Emulator in Windows Mobile 6:

In the following tutorial, I cover the process of Setting up Windows Mobile 6 for Mobile Browser Emulation using the Microsoft Device Emulator. This enables a user to experience Windows Mobile 6 on a PC via Emulation without even owning a Windows Mobile 6 product. It can be a great way to test drive Windows Mobile 6 before purchasing a product with it installed. In our case, it allowed us to Emulate Windows Mobile Browsing so that we could optimize our sites for the Mobile viewing audience. Installation and Emulation is simple and fairly straight forward.

Can this code be setup to run against the whole database instead of just 1 record at a time?

We have made some changes to this code to start capturing 1 new field of data and updating it as new records are added. But there is currently about 120,000 records more or less.. those records of course dont have the new field populated with anything..

We would like to run this logic that already in place and run it against the tables to update the fields 1 time. I think to make it easier, if it can be setup to expect the "valueTwo" variable, so that we can run it againt the individual codes instead of doing all the records at one time.. there are codes that only have a few records, so it would be best to test initially against the small code group.

            strSqual = "insert into trans (trans_type_name, trans_date,sys_id,mod_user_id,show_ind, remoteCode, techName) values('" & valueTwo & "','" & TransDate & "',"&strSystemID&", 1,'T', '" & dbQuote(strUser) & "', '" & strTechName & "')"
'get the new transaction_id out for just inserted alarm
strSqual = "select max(transaction_id) as transaction_id from trans"
            set rst = getStaticRecordSet(strSqual)

Debugging ASHX after deployment

I'm finished with a part of my ASHX handler and need to test it against the software that'll be calling it using HTTP POST. The software required an https url so I created an internally hosted site in IIS and published the project there.

Question now is how do I do any debugging on the script to see what data is coming out of it before the data goes back into the software that's calling it? Do I set something on the project itself to be able to step into the published DLL?

Best Way to Upgrade Using Web Setup Project

Hi there,

I am using VS2005.

I don't have much experience with web setup projects, but I now need to create a decent windows installer in order to allow customers to install one of our web applications. I have created a simple web setup project and it works fine, but not when it comes to upgrades of the application.

If for instance I install version 1.0 on a machine, and then later I try to install version 2.0, I don't seem to have the control that I would like... I can specify in the web setup project that the installer must enforce an uninstall of previous version, but then all application files and logs are uninstalled as well. If I let the application just install itself over the older version, it seems to leave some old DLL's there - it then causes issues in the application because DLL version conflicts.

My basic requirement is that I would like th installer to upgrade the old version with all the files required, but leave any application and log files in tact - this way the customer won't have to reconfigure the application after install.

What is the best way to handle this?
