Web deployment project - web.config section replacement does not add remove tag

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I have a web application that is actually installed as a component of a third party site.  In some configurations, I need to remove certain connection strings and re-add them.  I'm replacing this web.config section with a xml file that includes the following:

      <remove name="MyOverridenConnection"/>
      <add connectionString="Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=MyDb;Data Source=MyServer" name="MyOverridenConnection"

For some reason the remove tag is left out during the substitution and I end up with the following in the installed config:

      <add connectionString="Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=MyDb;Data Source=MyServer" name="MyOverridenConnection"

Is there any way to issue removes in replaced sec

Resetting properties in web deployment project based on custom build config file

I'm trying to create a general build environment for multiple projects that can take a some command line parameters and execute a build based on a custom config file.

The problem I am having is after I read in the config parameters with MSBuild.Community.Tasks XMLQuery, which works fine, I can't get aspnet_complier to see these parameters.

I keep getting "error MSB3462: Either MetabasePath or VirtualPath must be specified."

 Here is my project file:

<Project InitialTargets="PreMessage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003">
   <Target Name="PreMessage">
    <Message Text="Building..." />
 <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath)\MSBuildCommunityTasks\MSBuild.Community.Tas

Multiple MSIs from one deployment project

We have several .NET based products for which we need to generate multiple MSI files to allow for multiple instances of the same app to be installed on the same machine.  For instance, we might have a single server running version of the app that are pointed at either test or QA databases, or may use the same server box to deploy the product for multuple clients.  (So, for instance, our web server might have separate installs of the same code in different locations for product names "Client A test", "Client A QA", "Client B Test", etc., where the only real differences are in the web.cionfig files that are not overwritten by the install of a new version.)

Right now we simply have a deployment project for each named variation of the app.  This works, but is likely to become a maintenance mess as the number of instances grows.  We'd like to be able to maintain only a single deployment project and script the creation of multiple MSIs, one for each product variation, after the build of a baseline MSI.

As I understand it, this should be acheivable by building the MSI, then for each possible instance, making a copy of the MSI and giving it a unique ProductCode and PackageCode; this way Windows should recognize each instance as a unique application.  I've done this (as well as changing the produc

web deployment project (WS_deploy) on VS2008

I am building a asp.net webservice in VS2008 and the web service compiles and debug fine. The project should be using : Net 3,5

 I have

  1. VS2005 and VS208 installed
  2. .Net 1.1 - 3.5
  3. WebDeploymentSetup for VS2008 (and most likely a version for VS2005 as well)

But when I add a web deployment project the fun stops. The .WS_deploy project will not compile and I cannot find any precompiled output.

vs2010 web deployment project restarts w3svc even when restartwwwservice = false

We've updated some of our projects from VS2008 to VS2010.  When these projects are deployed the w3svc is restarted on the target machine, even when restartwwwservice = false in the vdproj file.

This was a problem in 2008 until SP1 (http://forums.asp.net/p/1300097/2534736.aspx).  Does this same problem exist in VS2010?

This is a major problem for us -  we need to be able to deploy projects without restarting IIS.

I've tried creating a new web deployment package and setting the restartWWWService field to false, but this still does a restart when it's installed.

Has anyone come across this problem in VS2010?

Could not load file or assembly - Web Deployment Project

I have the following projects in a solution :

- A Web Application

- A Class Library

- A Web Deployment project

The Web Application compiles and run fine when I don't go through the Web Deployment Project. However when I try to use that, I get the following error:

Error 1 An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for hibernate-configuration: Could not load file or assembly 'NHibernate' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. (F:\Folke\Folke.csproj_deploy\Release\web.config line 4) 1 1 Folke.csproj_deploy

"An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for hibernate-configuration: Could not load file or assembly 'NHibernate' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. (F:\Folke\Folke.csproj_deploy\Release\web.config line 4)"

This is the beginning of my Web.config:

config.web httpHandlers add and remove elements for ajax

I'm using an autocomplete contol of ajax toolkit. Yesterday a user found that it had stopped working (it wasn't generating the list as you type letters in the textbox). After hours of troubleshooting, I found that in web.config <httpHandlers>, this line -- <remove verb="*" path="*.asmx" /> was placed after the <add> line like this:

<add verb="*" path="*.asmx" validate="false" type="System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptHandlerFactory, System.Web.Extensions, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>
<add verb="*" path="*_AppService.axd" validate="false" type="System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptHandlerFactory, System.Web.Extensions, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>
<add verb="GET,HEAD" path="ScriptResource.axd" type="System.Web.Handlers.ScriptResourceHandler, System.Web.Extensions, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" validate="false"/>
<remove verb="*" path="*.asmx"/>

I fixed the problem by removing the <remove> line, but it seems I can also fix the problem by placing the <remove> line b

Web Deployment Project - "has not been pre-compiled"

I have created a Team Build that builds a solution containing a Web site, multiple class libraries (project references to the Web site) along with other compiled references, and a Web Deployment Project (WDP).  Everything is working well except when I deploy (either via Team Build or the WDP).  The deployed directory structure looks correct, but when I navigate to the first page I receive "The file '/WhatSite/FirstPage.aspx' has not been pre-compiled, and cannot be requested."

Here's the kicker:  When I set the WDP's Output Assemblies property to "Merge all outputs to a single assembly" and deploy, the default page returns the error above.  When I set the Output Assemblies to "Merge each individual folder output to its own assembly" and deploy, the default page loads correctly but all subsequent pages return the error.

If I go back to the plain Publish Web Site under the Build menu, the site works as expected.

What am I missing or does anyone have any ideas?

Site File Structure, Folders, Learning project, subweb, web.config

I am just learning asp.net.  I purchased an "ASP.Net 3.5 web programming in C#" book, which I like allot.  I am on chapter 3 and want to complete a shopping cart exercise from the book.  I have to create several folders and files.  The exercise has the files and under the root directory and a few folders below that.  I already have a site that I've been learning on.  Can I create a subfolder on my site and put all the files in there?  Like the subfolder is the root of the project.   Here is list of Folders and files... Code/CartItem.cs Code/Product.cs Data/Cars.mdb Images/car.jpg Cart.aspx Order.aspx Web.config ................................ On my website I want to create a subfolder to keep alll the files in, as so... ShoppingCart/Code/CartItem.cs ShoppingCart/Code/Product.cs ShoppingCart/Data/Cars.mdb ShoppingCart/Images/car.jpg ShoppingCart/Cart.aspx ShoppingCart/Order.aspx ShoppingCart/Web.config ................................ Can I have two web.cong files?, one in the subfolder?  Or do I have to use the single, web.config file in the root directory of the site?  Are there any other pitfalls or trouble I might get into setting up my file structure like this?  Anything I should be aware of? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Project Deployment / WSPBuilder

Hello, We're following the tutorial at http://www.thesharepointblog.net/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=815f255a-d0ef-4258-be2a-28487dc9975c&ID=11 in order to create a feature to implement a custom master page and associated files.  It works great, up until we deploy it.  The feature is configured for a site level, but we get numerous errors when deploying. Our deployment process is: Use WSPBuilder to create the WSP Go to the site's solution gallery Upload and activate We've also tried putting it to a farm level and activating through management shell/Central Admin, and that doesn't work, either. Could anyone help us out with deploying a site project? Thanks!

Using Freeware SharePoint Foundation 2010 with BLOB extender for large scale deployment project.

Hi Everyone, If I'd like to deploy SharePoint 2010 Foundation with Express DB (no SQL Server) what's the limitation ? and suppose i have implemented BLOB extender from freeware 3rd partyhttp://www.avepoint.com/sharepoint-storage-extender-docave/ does that means i can deploy more than 4 GB of data and it should perform faster since the SQL Express is not loaded with BLOB (document binaries). Can anyone clarify this matter please ? Thanks. /* Infrastructure Support Engineer */

Appsettings config section in web.config cause WCFTestClient to fail

i have a WCf project, when i add the following code to the configuration file (Web.config): <configuration> <appSettings> <add key="hello" value="Monday" /> </appSettings> ..... ... .... i get this error when trying to debug: "Unable to start debugging on the web server. The web server is not configured correctly. See help for common configuration errors. Running the web page outside of the debugger may provide further information." when i drop the appsettings, the WCFTestClient opens. how do i define constants in the web.config if not in that way ?

Deployment Of SSIS With Config Files

I went through other threads and links on this subject. Still one thing which concerns me is the config files.

My current folder path is C:\Karunakaran\folder1\folder2\

Under folder2 I have the following files

4 dtsx files
1 .database file
1 .dtproj file
1 .dtproj.user file
1 .sln file
1 .suo file

Config folder ( C:\Karunakaran\folder1\folder2\Config\)

Based on some of the threads, when I enabled package configuration, I changed the path from
C:\Karunakaran\folder1\folder2\Config\common.dtsconfig -> common.dtsconfig

Once I did this, when I open the project I get a dozen of warning similar to the one below

Warning loading <package1>.dtsx: Failed to load at least one of the configuration entries for the package. Check configurations entries and previous warnings to see descriptions of which configuration failed.

What am I doing wrong here? If I have to deploy this to another box, what should I do to ensure that nothing breaks once its copied / installed?

Custom config returns NULL section despite "proper" definition

I have defined a custom config section but when I try to get the section, it's always null.

I can't see what I'm missing. The only thing that I can might be an issue is that the code is part of a library project ina a solution with a main project, so not sure if the app.config has to be under the main project instead.

Below is my code, any ideas?

    public class CustomConfiguration : ConfigurationSection
        [ConfigurationProperty("keys", IsRequired = false)]
        public KeyCollection Keys
                return this["keys"] as KeyCollection;

    public class Key : ConfigurationElement
        [ConfigurationProperty("name", IsRequired = false)]
        public string Name
                return this["name"] as string;

        [ConfigurationProperty("value", IsRequired = false)]
        public string Value
                return this["value"] as string;

    public class KeyCollection : ConfigurationElementCollection
        public Key this[int index]
                return base.Base

Where to adjust Utils Project app.config

I have a work flow exposed as service (developed in WF4 vs2010) which calls a method from "Utils" project (a c# class library) in same solution. This "Utils" project calls a webservice exposed by client for entities Upsert/Get method. It works fine on local machine when i deploy it on iis. But when i deploy it on another machine and test it in SOAPUI it gives not found 404 error.

When i added client service reference in my local dev env it generated a app.config in "Utils" project and when i made deployment package it was not included in it. Is it due this that my service is not working.

This is the exception i get in SOAPUI after deployment:

Is a Dynamic Config Possible for SSAS BIDS Projects? (Data Source / Connection, and Deployment Targe

How do we automate SSAS Project configs such that (a) RDBMS data source server (connection) and (b) SSAS deployment target server are dynamic?

As it stands, just before I script the ASDB (for deployment/promotion from Dev to QA, or QA to Prod, for example), I use BIDS designer interfaces to change the source connection and deployment targets, then script the ASDB.

Is there a more dyamic alternative?  Perhaps something analogous to SSIS package configurations?  I can't believe that everybody is doing this as manually as I've done.
