Dynamic Binding of a Public Property in a User Control

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 03, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net
Hi, I am not sure how to pass a variable from an .aspx page to an .ascx page.  I have a Control that puts rotating banners on a page.  The control has several public properties.  However, only one of those properties changes on the page level.  All the other properties are the same for every page site-wide.  So, instead of setting all the properties on every page in my sites (many sites), I want to set it up so I only have to setup the sitewide properties once and only the page level properties on each page.   I want to create a control with a property of AdKeyword="somename" and pass it to another control that will grab that page-level property and add it to all the other site-wide properties.  I guess what I need could be called a Dynamic Control Property.   My .aspx page has:<%@ Register TagPrefix="uc1" TagName="Banner1" Src="banner1.ascx" %> <asp:Content ID="Leaderboard" runat="server" ContentPlaceHolderID="Leaderboard"> <uc1:Banner1 AdKeyword="L2Chamber" runat="server" OverrideHeight="90" /> </asp:Content> My banner1.ascx page has:<%@ Control Language="VB" ClassName="UserControl297" %> <%@ register tagprefix="uc1&

Accessing a public property of a nested user control in a master page from a pages' user control

Hi  I've got a web site that has a master page and that master page (mpMaster that has a user control (ucControl1) which has a sub user control (ucControl2), this user control has a property which accepts a value. Now, I have a page that uses the master page and on this page I have another user control (ucPageControl), I need to  find a way of setting the value in ucControl2 from ucPageControl. Is this possible at all? Many thanks Ed

Category attribute of user control property does not work correctly in categories tab.

I have a User Control (ascx) and a property which a want to display in my categories tab in Visual Studio in the category named "Styles".

[Category("Styles"), DefaultValue(""), Description("The value for formating something.")]
public String MyFormatProperty
set { /* the code for set */; }
get { /* the code for get */; }

And here is the problem: Actually I do not need a get, because I only have to set the property (write only property). But when I omit the get, the property is displayed in the "Misc" category in the categories tab in Visual Studio. Only when I code the get as well, then the property is displayed correctly in the "Styles" category in the categories tab in Visual Studio.

Does anybody know why? How can I display the category correctly only with set?

Thanks, S.

"Type ASP.x is not defined" error for dynamic user control when publishing updateable

I have a user control (ContainerCtrl) which programmatically instantiates another user control (SimpleCtrl) in OnLoad. It builds and runs fine, but when I publish it I get the error "error BC30002: Type 'ASP.SimpleCtrl' is not defined." (If I publish without the "updateable" option there's no error, but I need the site to be updateable.)

I assume this has to do with the particulars of how the assembly(ies) are built for the different compiler options. My question is, how can I get it to work properly for "updateable" publishing?

VS 2008 / .NET 3.5 sp1

The code follows (web.config is the default from Visual Studio).

Many thanks, Dave

<%@ Control Language="VB" ClassName="SimpleCtrl" CodeFile="SimpleCtrl.ascx.vb" Inherits="_SimpleCtrl" %>

    Simple control

Partial Class _SimpleCtrl
    Inherits UserControl

    'Nothing to see here.

End Class

<%@ Control Language="VB" CodeFile="ContainerCtrl.ascx.vb" Inherits="_ContainerCtrl"

User Control and DataSourceID Property

I created a user control (.ascx) that contains a paging-user-control, a repeater and some other controls.
I want to use the property DataSourceID. How should I get the data from the datasource and when?
What is the recommended way?

I did it this way:
- Create a method to get the data by reflection, like:

private void PerformSelect()
	if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(this.DataSourceID))
		Control control = Page.FindControl(this.DataSourceID);
		if (control == null)
			control = Parent.FindControl(this.DataSourceID);

		MethodInfo method = control.GetType().GetMethod("Select");
		IEnumerable data = (IEnumerable)method.Invoke(control, new object[0]);

		this.DataSource = data;
 - Call this method
In PageLoad when no postback
Changing the current page (paging-user-control)
Changing the current tab (tab-user-control)
Switching Visibility to true

I think that way is not the optimum, is there any better way?
Do you have any suggestions or links?

Thanks for your help, Andreas

User Control as Composite Control Property

I have a composite control (Called Dialog) which has a property "ContentControl"

At design time, I'd like this property to bind to a user control that is on the page.

When I add the items in the designer, the designer loads as expected.

However, when I try to run the web page, I get the following error:

Parser Error Message: Cannot create an object of type 'System.Web.UI.UserControl' from its string representation 'EditTerm1' for the 'ContentControl' property.

Please let me know if there is another way to bind a user control as a property of a composite control.

Designer Code:

	<cc1:Dialog ID="Dialog1" runat="server" Buttons="SaveCancel"
Title="Edit Term" ContentControl="EditTerm1" />

Problem binding business objects to custom user control properties

I have created a user control (supplierPicker) intended to allows a supplier database to be searched and a supplier selected. I want to be able to use this control in a number of other user controls, by binding the suppplierID property of the supplierPicker to a supplierID property in a business object, which is set as the datacontext of the parent user control. When I do this, and there is a supplierID specified in the business ofbject, the binding sets the supplierID in the supplierPicker control and it shows the correct supplier name in the textbox. However when the supplierID DependencyProperty is changed from within the supplierPicker the newly selected supplier name is shown in the TextBox, but the SupplierID does not propogate back to the business object. Other controls on the parent form work fine, so the binding to the business object seems to be ok. Any pointers as to what I'm doing wrong here would be grately appreciated.  This one has been driving me nuts for days! Snipped code for the supplier picker:         public partial class SupplierPicker : UserControl, INotifyPropertyChanged     {         public static DependencyProperty SupplierIDProperty;         public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChan

Add property to user control design time properties VB windows forms

Problem with property editor of a web user control

I created an asp.net user control with a property named 'TabList' , the property is visible when I place my control on a page, the default editor for this property was a simple text box, but I needed a DropDownList for editing the TabList property of my control, so I added following code to implement it:

<Category("Navigation Bar"), Editor(GetType(DropDownList), GetType(System.Drawing.Design.UITypeEditor)), Description("List of Tabs"), DefaultValue("SHISHIR WAHI")> Public Property TabList() As String
            Return _tablist
        End Get

        Set(ByVal value As String)
            _tablist = value
        End Set
    End Property

The Category() and DefaultValue() are working fine but Editor() and Description() are not, what could be the problem?

Please help.

Dynamic Add of Web User Control

I want to dynamically add a web user control to a web form.  Everything I've read so implies that I should be able to use the PlaceHolder web server control for this, yet I cannot this to work.  I've created a simple test to just try to master this concept, yet I can only get non-web user controls added.  Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?  Below is the entirety of my code.  Thanks.

.aspx Page:

<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="ControlTestPage.aspx.cs" Inherits="ControlTestPage" %>
<%@ Register Src="~/testControl.ascx" TagName="tCtl" TagPrefix="Custom" %>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head runat="server">
    <form id="form1" runat="server">
    <Custom:tCtl ID="tCtl" runat="server" /> <br /> <br />
        <asp:PlaceHolder ID="mainPlc" runat="server"></asp:PlaceHolder>

User Control Lib + ComponentResourceKey + StyleDictionary = Cannot Find Public Type

I'm trying to create a style resource dictionary file that can be used across all applications that use a user control defined in a user control lib.

I added a resource dictionary called StyledUserControlLibDictionary.xaml to the StyledUserControlLib.
<ResourceDictionary xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"

How to pass control reference to its property in data binding expression

Here is data binding expression (dropdown list is nested in gridview)

<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlEmployees"
         DataSource='<%# PayCheckBO.GetEmployeesNameIdPair() %>'
         SelectedIndex='<%# GetSelectedIndex(HOW TO PASS REF of ddlemployee HERE)%>'/>

Code Behind has function which looks like

public int GetSelectedIndex(DropDownList ddl)
        //loop through the item in the dropdownlist
        //return index based on xyz checks

The whole reason for passing the reference is to save round trip to database and not to use SESSION

Adding Dynamic Rows in ASP.NET GridView Control with TextBoxes and with Delete functionality

In my previous examples, I have demonstrated on how to add dynamic rows in GridView control with TextBoxes and how to save the values into the database. Now, seems that most of the developers are asking if how to add a delete functionality with it. So in this example, I'm going to show on how to delete a certain row in the dynamic GridView with TextBoxes.

Choosing Between a User Control or Web Part for SharePoint

SharePoint will only display Web Parts on a page. However, there are publicly available shims that allow you to write user controls and have them be displayed as a Web Part. From SharePoint's point of view, the shim is a Web Part. From the point of view of the user control, the shim is simply a control in .NET that is including the user control

WPF / Silverlight tutorial: Visibility property and binding

Visibility property is a very powerful and yet often overlooked property available in both WPF and Silverlight. It enables you to set Visibility of certain UIElement objects to different states like: Visible, Collapsed and Hidden (not supported by Silverlight). This tutorial shows you how to use it and how to bind to Visibility property

Building Re-Usable ASP.NET User Control and Page Libraries with VS 2008

I am having problems with a user control. I want my solution to have a separate project for holding my user controls.

The main project can get a reference to this user control project and can import this user control dll into my main project.

Thanks in advance,

Multiple Instances of User Control

I have a user control that I place on a page severl times.  When I make a selection on a ddl in one one control the SelectedIndexChanged event fires for all the control on the page for that ddl.  So I get duplication of an insert that I do.  Is there a way to make sure these events are isolated so this doesn't happen.
