Create drop-down filter for External List

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 02, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
I hope this is an easy question. I will have an external list of a bunch of people.  There are several ways I want to display this data: All of them, Only the ones that have a value of 1-4 in the status field, Only the ones that have any other value in the status field, and people that have a value of 1-4 in the status field, but are at a certain location. I want to be able to put a drop-down filter above the list where people can select that. Could someone please point me in the right direction? Time is of the essence.

Excel External Table Data can only create new SharePoint List when Exporting from Excel?

I have a SQL Query that I refresh everyday in Excel. I want to be able to export this list over to a SharePoint list right after my refresh in Excel but I can only Export to a SharePoint list only once. If I try to export again to the same list then it will give me the error "The specified list name is already in use on this server. You must rename the list before publishing it to the server." I have web parts that have connections to this list and I do not want to export my Query to a new SharePoint list everyday. Does anyone know a way around this issue?

Filter External List by a range of data

I have an external list web part that I am currently using a choice filter on to filter by a certain status.  The options are yes, no, or (empty).  However, I would like to be able to add an additional option to filter where the person has the previous status set to no, but has a value in a different field greater than 90. I realize that the choice filter probably wouldn't do this, and that I could do this easily with separate list views, where I have some sort of web part that can change the list views on the fly. I would think I could use one of those list filters to do this, but when I tried to do that for my original problem, I was unable to connect the filter to my external list. I could connect the list view filter to any internal list without an issue however.  Somebody commented on my old thread that I posted as cptInsane0 that I could just make an infopath view form that has buttons that do this.  I have dabbled with infopath a little bit, but I wasn't able to get infopath to connect to my external list either.  I first had to connect to an internal one, and then for some reason I could add the external list as an alternate data source. I can't be the first person who has had this issue. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Create View in an External List that Gets a Field from Another External Content Type via Foreign Key

I currently have two tables in a SQL Server 2k8 database: Locations and Customers

The fields in the Locations table are:

  • LocationName
  • StreetAddress
  • City
  • State
  • ZIP
  • CusotmerID (foreign key joined to Customers table)

The fields in the Customers table are:

  • ID (primary key)
  • CustomerName
  • CurrentBalance

Through SharePoint Designer, I have both tables set up as External Content Types of the same names as the tables and have created External Lists for each External Content Type. All CRUD operations are working perfectly. I added the proper Assocaiation and I've set CustomerName to be the Title of the Customers External Content Type. I can currently use a picker for CustomerID in the Locations List and CustomerName is displayed properly. Also, the default DispForm also correctly displays the CustomerName for any single Location record.

However, I would like to modify the default ReadList so the foreign key (CustomerID) will show the Title field of Customers (CustomerName). However, I am running into trouble finding out how to do this.

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated!!

Programatically Create External List

Emp_Id  Emp_Name  Emp_Age
 1         X         40
 2         Y         50

Emp_Id   Emp_Stat   Emp_Dt
  1         A        12/12/2010
  2         N        12/12/2011
i have above table in my Database and i want to create a external list in which it shows all the columns from the two table and the condition is the Emp_Stat should be 'A'.In this case it should show only the Emp_id =1(coz emp_Stat of 1 is 'A').

How can we do this filter while creating the External List. We are creating the external list by using the BDC Model.

List views - Can I create a filter for tomorrow's items?

I'm setting up some views for a list, and I've already got "John's Tasks for Today" created.  Is there a way to create a view that shows the items that are due tomorrow?  I tried to do this with a filter.  "Show the items when column (Due Date) (is equal to)" and then I typed [Tomorrow] in the field.  I get the error message "Filter value is not in a supported date format."

How to use a drop down list to edit in the standard Edit.aspx with DD?

Hey All,

I'm brand new to Dynamic Data and to ASP.NET.  I've been able to fumble around and get the calendar extender up and running and a few other customization options implemented, but I can't seem to get this drop down list to work - even after reading tons of online info.  The good news is that my web page/application is VERY simple, so hopefully you guys can help me out.  I'm working in VB btw.

I have a list of road projects submitted to me by local governments.  One of the fields is SponsoringAgency, which has a limited number of possible entries (the names of member governments).  Thus, when they submit a new project, or edit an existing one, I want to limit the input into the field "SponsoringAgency." I'm trying to use a dropdownlist because I'm familiar with it from Access, but it may not be the best approach.  Imagine you just setup a brand new, standard DD website, how would you get this to work?

Methods tried and failed (probably because I don't understand them fully):

UIHint - The closest I can get with this is an error saying that since SponsoringAgency isn't a Foreign Key, I'm out of luck.

Creating a SponsoringAgency Table - In my data layer, I created a second table with a list of government names.  I then tried se

FormView Text Field Being Set by A Drop Down List

Hello, I have a FormView which is used to insert a record into a database.  Outside of this formview i have a drop down list, I want to grab the value from that drop down list and set one of the text fields within the formview to it's currently selected value.  I've tried the following code, but the dynamic categorytextbox line is what seems to not be working.

                    <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlCategory" runat="server" AutoPostBack="True"
DataSourceID="SqlDataSourceCategory" DataTextField="CategoryName"
DataValueField="CategoryID" Width="200px">

Text='<%# Bind("CategoryID") %>' Visible="False" />

        protected void FormView1_DataBound(object sender, EventArgs e)
dynamic varCategory = ddlCategory.SelectedValue;
dynamic categoryTextBox = FormView1.FindControl("CategoryIDText

Filter web parts in new form page of a list

I've created 2 custom lists. The 2nd list has a lookup column from the 1st list. In the new form page for this 2nd list, I've added the 1st list as a web part. Now, I want to connect the 2 web parts, but it's not available. Basically, what I wanted is that when I select an item on the lookup column, the webpart containing 1st list would show that item on the same page.

I think I'll need to use Sharepoint Designer to implement something like this, but just wanted to check if anyone has done something like this using browser only.

Create a placeholder for drop down lists

First time post here, if i'm in the wrong area please move as necessary. Thanks

I'm using VWD with a database back end. I have a list of teams which are marked off by league, level, division, teamid and then using gridview for the list of players per teams.

I've got the drop downs working correctly but running into a little snag and that is on the auto postback.

When I only have one option come up in a list, i obviously don't change that list and thus it doesn't change the next drop down because there is no post back. is there a way to use a "header" value?

Example of my data

League Level Division Team

NHL 1 West Vancouver
NHL 1 West Calgary
NHL 1 West Edmonton
NHL 1 Central Chicago

OHL 2 West London
OHL 2 West Guelph

NBA 1 Central Chicago
NBA 1 Central Detroit
NBA 1 Central Milwaukee

So my drop downs choose by league, then level then division and then team then shows the player roster for that selected team.

The problem I run into is when only one value exists based on the previous choices I've made. If I choose NHL then Central only Chicago shows up in the example above. Because I'm not choosing between it and another value, the drop down does not put in a post back and thus I don't get a list of the team and then the players
