Composite control: How to bubble a textbox's TextChanged event?

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I've created a composite control that contains several controls, including a textbox. I'm trying to expose the TextChanged event of the textbox as an event on the composite control. I understand that events can be bubbled up the control hierarchy and handled at a higher level, which I've attempted to do, but I can't get the bubbled event to fire. When I drop the control on an aspx I can see the TextChanged event, I can subscribe to the event, but nothing ever happens. Any suggestions? Here is what I think is the relevant code:

// My event
private static readonly object EventTextChanged = new object();

//Handle the bubbled event
EventHandler textChangedHandler = (EventHandler)Events[EventTextChanged];

protected override bool OnBubbleEvent(object source, EventArgs e)
    bool handled = false;

asp:textbox TextChanged event

I have a textbox in my app in which I have code behind in the "onTextChanged" event that I'd like to execute  without doing an entire page post back .

I can't use use AJAX not an option for me (corporate thing).

Anyways, I have been struggling with the specifics on implementing ICallbackEventHandler. Or is than another way I can/should do this.

The code in the textChanged event pulls a dataset from the DB and does a validation.

Any advice is appreciated.

TextBox TextChanged event not triggered

I have a textbox, under a specific circumstance, its textchanged event doesn't fired.

the keydown and previewkeydown do fired.

I assume there are other control intercept the keydown event and fool around it, probably did something over it.

but what can caused the textchanged event being cut off?

or any debugging approach for this?

i tried the AddHandler to the textchanged, in case its handled prop set to true that caused the cut off. but same, the event still don't get triggered under that special circumstance.

TextBox in UserControl: "TextChanged" event does not see other controls

I am building a UserControl with several TextBox controls. The behavior I'm looking for, is everytime a value is changed in any TextBox, the UserControl refreshes a couple labels contained within it. Here's the code behind file that does the work:

Public Sub Refresh(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Controls.TextChangedEventArgs)
    lblTotalHours.Content = txtHours.Text
End Sub

Now, here's a way to hook it up that works, however, "PreviewTextInput" gives the old textbox value to Refresh() and not the new one (as expected). I'm just writing this example because I had to confirm that my method of linking the event worked - and it does. My application runs fine even though the result isn't what I am looking for: (edit: to make it work, i also adapted the Refresh() declaration to match the PreviewTextInput delegate to TextCompositionEventArgs, if I recall correctly...)

<UserControl ...>
        <Style TargetType="x:Key TextBox">
            <EventSetter Event="PreviewTextInput" Handler="Refresh" />
        <TextBox Name=&q

TextChanged event of TextBox in Repeater

            if (typeof window.onload != 'function') {

            for (var i = 0; i < inputs.length; i++) {
                inputs[i].onfocus = function() {
                    this.parentNode.getElementsByTagName("span")[0].style.display = "inline";
                inputs[i].onblur = function() {
                    this.parentNode.getElementsByTagName("span")[0].style.display = "none";

Composite Control which contains arbitrary content defined in .aspx of parent and thier ViewState

I want to write own control which can contain other. And I want to define content of the control in the .aspx file where the control is defined. I have written such control. But now I have issue with ViewState of inner controls of my control. The following samle illustrates the issue: I defined two asp:DropDownList ID="ddl1" and ID="ddl2" One of them is inside of my control and other is outside. When posback is occurred asp:DropDownList ID="ddl1 loses state and becomes empty. How to say ASP.net to store state of inner controls defined by this way?

Localization not working in class library (composite control)

I have a class library called WEM.portal which used Resource files to localise text in my composite controls.

I store my resource files (eg MyResourceFile1.resx) in App_GlobalResources folder and then refer to them using

MyLabel1.text = My.Resources.MyResourceFile1.MyResourceKey1

This is all working ok until I create seperate files for each language such as MyResourceFile1.FR-fr.resx.

I have implemented this throughout my other web applications but the Class Library doesnt seem to want to work the same way

When I load the page it correctly showes the resourced keys which I have done through the web application BUT the resource keys in the composite controls does not seem to pick up the culture code.

Am I missing something stupid. Ive tried

  • changing the Build Action on the resource file to Content and Custom tool to GlobalResourceProxyGenerator
  • Creating a resourceManager but to no avail

User Control as Composite Control Property

I have a composite control (Called Dialog) which has a property "ContentControl"

At design time, I'd like this property to bind to a user control that is on the page.

When I add the items in the designer, the designer loads as expected.

However, when I try to run the web page, I get the following error:

Parser Error Message: Cannot create an object of type 'System.Web.UI.UserControl' from its string representation 'EditTerm1' for the 'ContentControl' property.

Please let me know if there is another way to bind a user control as a property of a composite control.

Designer Code:

	<cc1:Dialog ID="Dialog1" runat="server" Buttons="SaveCancel"
Title="Edit Term" ContentControl="EditTerm1" />

Creating an integer only textbox control

Im close I just cant figure out why its not working. public partial class IntegerTextBox : TextBox { public IntegerTextBox() { } private void OnTextChanged(KeyPressEventArgs e) { if (!char.IsControl(e.KeyChar) && !char.IsDigit(e.KeyChar)) e.Handled = true; } }

Binding an event method from a control in a seperate window

How would you bind a event method from a control back to a seperate window?  I have a ActiveX control hosted in a WindowsFormsIntegration wrapper.  That is operating in its own window along with all its events.  The properties of the control are handled by a class that defines the dependency objects (thanks Bob) to provide a view model between it and a window with controls for setting/getting those properties.  Since events constrained to Window 2, is it possible to bind the events back to Window 1?

Need help with validating an alphanumeric string within a textbox control.

Hi everyone,I am developing a simple WinForms app for a presentation next week and need to validate that a particular string in a particular textbox is alphanumeric.  I have included the code from the button click event handler below: // Alphanumeric private void btnValidate4_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { try { if (txtAlphanumeric.Text == "") MessageBox.Show("Please enter an alphanumeric string before clicking the 'Validate' button.", "Whoa there, pardner!!", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Information); else { Regex rgxAlphanumeric = new Regex("^[a-zA-Z0-9]*$"); Match alphaNumericMatch = rgxAlphanumeric.Match(txtAlphanumeric.Text); if (!alphaNumericMatch.Success) MessageBox.Show("The string supplied does NOT match the specified pattern.", "Error!", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Error); else { MessageBox.Show("The supplied string matches the specified pattern.", "Success!", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Exclamation);
