The mystery of the missing metadata

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 02, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
The mystery of the missing metadata This is a problem I have been struggling with for weeks. I am writing this post because after days of persistence and attempting seemingly random disconnected changes to my code, I have found the solution. There is absolutely no information about this problem online, and the methods I have used seem mostly undocumented. I would say most of the problem is that SharePoint is infested with bugs and the SharePoint error reporting is useless. (Often it will tell you that something has worked, when really it hasn't - you will not realise this straight away because the document only becomes corrupt, or starts to lose meta data later on. I have a document list in my SharePoint site, built upon a customised content type (inherited from the document content type) that adds a number of meta data fields to my list. One of these fields is a lookup field to another list in the same type. I have been working on a web application written in asp.net that accesses the sharepoint documents through a webservice. I am using Web references and not Service references because I cannot get Service references to work (typical story when it comes to SharePoint development) My problem started when I try to give users the ability to upload to SharePoint through the web application. Using Copy.CopyIntoItems works well, it lets me set most of the metadata fields, but no

Sharepoint 2010 Missing Managed Metadata Service

According to the following MS article, the Tags feature is linked to the Managed Metadata Service, which is required to use Tags. For some reason I cannot find this feature as described in the article where it specified Managed Metadata Service is located in the Application Management section. What should I check to make sure this feature/service can be enabled?

Content Query Web Part missing in SharePoint 2010

If you don't see content query web part listed in the web parts list, this is because you have not enabled "Search Server Web Parts" feature in site collection features. Enable this feature and content query web part will show in the list of web parts.

Missing 'new item templates'

 Hi all,

I am a 'newbie' to VWD and I am slowly working through the Basic Walkthrough Help files, and learning plenty along the way.

However, when I tried to create a new database in the LINQ control walkthrough I found that the option to create a new database is missing, and further investigation has found that many other new item templates are missing.

I am using a brand new machine with Windows 7 Ultimate and have enabled IIS and .NET from Control Panel-Programs-Turn Windows Features On-Off. I used the WPI to install all basic elements eg. IIS Components, SQL Server Express.

The only 'new item templates' I have when I right-click the App_Data Folder and choose 'new item' are:-

ADO.NET Data Service

AJAX Enabled WCF Service

Dynamic Data Field

SQL Server Database

Text File

XML File

Does anyone know where I have gone wrong.

Metadata: Create a Database Schema Repository with Meta Data Services in SQL Server 2000

SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services is a repository technology that stores and manages metadata for SQL Server. Instead of building database schemas over and over, Meta Data Services allows you to freeze an entire schema for use in other projects. You can also use these schemas for training, testing, or debugging. In this article, the authors will review the various components of Meta Data Services and show how it can be programmed using a Visual Basic client, XML, and XSLT. They will also show you how to manage and manipulate your metadata by generating a simple database schema using a SQL Server repository.

Avoiding DLL Hell: Introducing Application Metadata in the Microsoft .NET Framework

The Microsoft .NET platform uses metadata and assemblies to store information about components, enabling cross-language programming and resolving the infamous DLL Hell problem. This article describes the use of metadata for easy linking and loading of assemblies, the relationship between metadata and concepts such as IDL and type libraries, and the metadata hierarchy. The process of reading metadata from assemblies for easy versioning is also described. Although Microsoft provides the MSIL disassembler, IDLASM, and MetaInfo.exe for accessing metadata, the author provides two sample programs that read metadata using the unmanaged metadata interfaces and the Reflection API.

Which ComponentModel.DataAnnotations attributes are used in the Dynamic Data metadata classes?

This namespace contains a lot of attributes for use in, I'm sure, many different applications. I'm curious to know which subset of the attributes in this namespace can be and are used in the Dynamic Data proxy class system, where the entity class is given an attribute that specifies a metadata type. That type contains properties with the same names as properties in the entity class, and the metadata provider builds MetaColumns using attributes on properties in these 'buddy' (proxy') classes.

So far my list includes, from System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations:

Required, Range, DisplayFormat, StringLength, UIHint, DataType, Regular Expression, Display Column, Editable, and CustomValidation.

And from System.ComponentModel:

DisplayName, Description, and DefaultValue.

Am I missing any?

All my server-controls became unrecognized!!! like there's compilation error or web.config missing!

please help - the problem is in post subject.

I have lots of warnings with following text:

"Warning 10 Element 'HyperLink' is not a known element. This can occur if there is a compilation error in the Web site, or the web.config file is missing. C:\Users\Pavel\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\WebSites\BioWebSite\ToScientist.aspx 26 18 C:\...\BioWebSite\"

But web.confg is there! And there's no compilation error!

Site builds just fine. And If I upload it to my hoster - it works!

But with all these errors I cant add controls to pages - VS2010 adds hyperlink without ID, and intelisens stoped to work.

Strange, but in my other project (web-application) I have no such difficuty.

Apparently missing something in my understanding of session handler...

It was doing exactly what I expected until I added more than 1 property to it.   It seems if I set the value of a property this, in turn, sets every property in the handler to the same value.  It's blatantly obvious I didn't have the understanding I thought I did on this.  :-)

Could someone point out what I'm missing?  I figured it had something to do with the "shared" but if it's not shared then I would have to declare an instance on my page which would kinda ruin the state of my variables (otherwise, I'd just put them all in my class), right??

        End Get

            HttpContext.Current.Session(SessionHandler._strStudentName) = value

Good Day Gurus!

I have a Excel user application which has a user form (named 'Registo') that displays criteria and an image that has been entered in it's corresponding spreadsheet. This works the way it should.  There's also the ability to search the spreadsheet via a form (by clicking 'Pesquisar' button) this opens a search form. However, I having a bit of a problem with it. When I try to search for something it basically doesn't do anything at all. It just sits there. So I tried to debug it and I think I'm having a problem with either the JET db engine or somethign with teh query or maybe I don't have the correct reference.

I 'borrowed' this Excel application from another forum because it's exactly what I'm looking for! However, I suck at vb.

So I was hoping somebody could take a look at the code and see if I'm missing something?  I'm kinda' desparate to get this working because I'm been trying to figure it out for days and I'm running out of time.  Cry

How can I prioritise search results to show where document metadata has a hit first and then where t

When my users run a search against a site with a bunch of document libraries they will often search for terms that are in the title of the doc, if they do know the title they will put that in. What I would like to do is have the results ordered such that if any hits are on the document metadata (eg Title) then they are presented first and any results that are from hits on the content of the documents are presented later.

So, if they get the title spot on in their search query that document will appear first .... if they don't get it right then the likelyhood is that the title is something like what they entered so similar titled docs are presented first and then those with matching content ....

How can I achieve this?
