reading values from config files in NUnit tests

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

One of my NUnit tests has to read in some values from config files.  In my main application this process works perfectly well, however when I run the unit test, the code that reads in the values from the config files doesnt read anything in.  Ive tried putting app.config in my unit test project (I even tried web.config) but nothing seems to work.  Are there any special steps involved when reading from config files in an nunit test ?

NUnit and config files

Ive created an NUnit test project in my solution and have added 3 tests.  They all fail with the same error

Reading Web.Config to pass values to silverlight Application

In asp.net application we often use to save the connection string and some other information like user name , web service URL etc in the web.config and then in application read them and use in the application and even we can easily changes these value at later time.However, this scenario does not work out of the box from a Silverlight application, which doesn't seem to even have access to web.config.The reason is simple: a Silverlight application runs on the client side. The XAP -just like the browser- cannot access server resources such as web.config. In this post I will show you how you can read the web.config and pass to the silverlight application and then on the silverlight application how can you read the passed parameters.

Clean Web.Config Files (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

.NET 4 includes a new version of the CLR, and a new .NET 4 specific machine.config file (which is installed side-by-side with the one used by .NET 2, .NET 3 and .NET 3.5).

The new .NET 4 machine.config file now automatically registers all of the ASP.NET tag sections, handlers and modules that we've added over the years, including the functionality for:

.ASP.NET AJAX
.ASP.NET Dynamic Data
.ASP.NET Routing (which can now be used for both ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC)
.ASP.NET Chart Control (which now ships built-into ASP.NET V4)
What this means is that when you create a new "Empty ASP.NET application" project in VS 2010, you'll find that the new default application-level web.config file is now clean and simple:

The ASP Column: What's in ASP.NET Config Files?

Even though you've been using ASP. NET for a while, how much do you really know about ASP. NET configuration files? While you've probably touched the Web. config file from time to time, there are some nuances involved in configuring ASP.

Reading values from data access component individually

Hi,

I am trying to pick data from the database through data access layer and use those values in different text boxes on the page.Basically on a click on the form, modal popup is planned to read the database and put the values into different text boxes which can be latter changed/ updated.

 What I am unable to do is accessing those values on the form itself progamatically. I will be thankful for any ideas and help.

My data access component is as follows:

cmd.Parameters.Add(

cmd.Parameters[

new SqlParameter ("@reg_id", SqlDbType.Int ));"@reg_id"].Value=reg_id;try

{

con.Open();

Problem when using Activator.CreateObject and reading App.Config file

Hello, this is the scenario. I have an application that load at runtime severals dll. these dll are actually "adapters" that wraps calls to web services, database and so on. The app.config of the "main" application stores in config sections all information necessary to each adapter (i.e.Web ServiceURL..) and I have created inside each adapter a class to ready those values the loading at run time the DLL has been implemented by storing all necessary types into a dictionary of generics and when I need to instanciate it I call the Activate.CreateObject and I pass the specific type (I means the name of the Adapter class) The problem is that the adapter class itself is not able to get the config value because ConfigSection has not been initialized. If I write: IInterfaceAdap adapt = new myAdapter() -> I read the config data IInterfaceAdap adapt = (IInterfaceAdap)Activator.CreateObject (type) -> now way to read the data stored in the App.Config. I think that I undertood the problem but I'm not able to find a workaround to read data store in the app.config!! I need help please!!

Updating Config Files in Sharepoint Farm

I am trying to update config files web.comnfig in the Virtual Directory of my server so that users are allowed to upload more that 50 MB of files in my IIS 7 server. Everytime i do the update it works fine but after few days when there are few changes then it removes the added elements itself and restore in the Original Stage. I used to edit my config files manually. I found a way of creating a config files and saving it to the Config Directory under 12 Hive in Server. Like the Content will be similar as follows <actions>    <add path="configuration/SharePoint/SafeControls">       <SafeControl          Assembly="System.Web, Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral,             PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"          Namespace="System.Web.UI.WebControls"          TypeName="*"          Safe="True"/>    </add>   </actions> I have to add following line <system.webServer>     <security>       <requestFiltering>         <requestLimits maxAllowedCon

Need Best Practices for SSI packages (dtsx-files + ONE config)

Please advice hot to keep connection string for many packages at one place. Idea is to have one .dtsConfig-file for each iteas is not acceptable. DEV, TEST and PROD - different virtual computers. Each one can have it's own config-file lying in one and the same folder (c:\bi\configs\)

Error while reading values on postback

I have some problems with trying to read values on a postback.The fields, textboxes and dynamiclly created fields doesn't keep their values or I'm doing something wrong when trying to read the values. Reading Excel files from 64-bit ASP.Net app

I have an ASP.Net app that is running on a 64-bit server. Part of that app reads data from Excel files and loads that data into our SQL_Server database.I am using the ACE OLE driver to read the Excel files and it works great on my 32-bit development machine. When we deploy the app (from a 64-bit client machine) to our 64-bit server, I get this exception when trying to open the connection:"System.InvalidOperationException: The 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' provider is not registered on the local machine."There are many posts about addressing this issue, so I think these are my options:1. Compile the app for any cpu from a 32-bit machine and deploy it to the server (making the app 32-bit) - not desirable as ideally we would like to run the app in 64-bit mode2. Convert the excel file to csv then use more base .Net libraries to get the data out3. Install Office on the server and use the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel library to access the data - not sure if this will work though4. Purchase a conversion library5.  Wait for the 64-bit version of Office and use the new Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.14.0 driver. - Can I get a Beta version now?I am looking for confirmation that my options are accurate/complete and guidance on which of these (or another option) are the most viable.Thanks, Mike

Changing Firefox values in about:config via Javascript

Hi WebGurus, I am currently facing a problem with Mozilla firefox JavaScript window.close() not working / does not work in firefox Is there any way of changing the values in about:config (specifically dom.allow_scripts_to_close_windows ) using Javascript, or via any other method when a page loads? Why are folder web.config files excluded?

I am asking this mainly out of curiosity. When access rules are created for folders using WSAT, web.config files are generated in these folders. I thought these rules should be deployed with the application (It is at least the case for all my applications), but these file are not included after creation so they are not deployed by default. What is the rationale behind this?

Error reading .config file in Windows Forms app - Access is denied

I'm attempting to read a connection string from a .config file in a Windows Forms app on a test laptop. A previous version of the application worked just fine, but now I get a configuration exception thrown - "Configuration system failed to initialize." The inner exception message says - "An error occurred loading a configuration file: Access is denied". The user I'm logged in as is in the Administrators group and there's no obvious problems with the config file. The same config file works just fine on my dev machine so it's not an issue with ordering of the XML. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.If a response to your question is helpful or answers it please mark it as such!

Custom membership provider not returning values from my web.config

I created a custom membership provider in my ASP.NET 4.0 web site, stored  in App_Code, and referenced in my web.config.

However, it doesn't appear to be pulling values out of web.config during initialization.

The code was taken from http://www.asp.net/general/videos/how-do-i-create-a-custom-membership-provider, and the only modifications were changing "connectionStringName" here to the name of my connection string:

    Dim ConnectionStringSettings As ConnectionStringSettings = _
      ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings(config("connectionStringName"))

The connection string always comes back as nothing in this line:

    If ConnectionStringSettings Is Nothing OrElse ConnectionStringSettings.ConnectionString.Trim() = String.Empty Then
      Throw New ProviderException("Connection string cannot be blank.")
    End If

No matter what I change the password format to in web.config, the default value here is always used:

    Dim temp_format As String = config("passwordFormat")
    If temp_format Is Nothing Then
      temp_format = "Has
