Access denied to Search Service Application

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 01, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
I just "upgraded" my installation of SharePoint 2010 Foundation with Search Server Express 2010.  During the installation, I was able to access and configure the Search Service Application. However, a day later, I cannot access the application management page: I get an access denied error.  I am the farm administrator, so supposedly I am supposed to have access to the management page.  I've also tried adding my login to the "Full Control" group of the Search Application; it gives me the same error.  It appears that the only account that can access the administration page is the service/system account.  Obviously this would not be ideal. I've tried looking around for logs to see if anything is amiss, but there appears to be nothing logged. What gives?  How do I fix it?

Search Server Express 2010 - Access Denied when attempting to manage Search Service Application or P

I first noticed this error with the Search Service Application when I was no longer able to use the search portal, but have since noticed the issue with the PowerPoint Service Application.  When I navigate in Central Administration to either the "Farm Search Administration" or the "Manage service applications" pages and attempt to manage the "Search Service Application", I get this error: Error: Access Denied  Current User You are currently signed in as:  WHEELERS\MyUserName   Sign in as a different user    I have tried removing the service application and re-adding it, changing the application pool to running under an existing application pool as the farm administrator, as another application pool with the same identity as the primary web application, and as another application pool running under the SP-SearchService identity. The big recent change with SharePoint, aside from fixing the previous issue where I was incorrectly using CNAMEs with Kerberos, was to switch the main web application to claims authentication. That site correctly works with claims based authentication and Kerberos.

Access denied when Searc Service Application tries to crawl Sharepoint content

I have just set up a new SP2010 environtment(3 servers: WFE, App, SQL).

When I try to get my Search Service Application to crawl my main SP site and my MySite location, I get the following error in the crawl log:

"Access is denied. Verify that either the Default Content Access Account has access to this repository, or add a crawl rule to crawl this repository. If the repository being crawled is a SharePoint repository, verify that the account you are using has "Full Read" permissions on the SharePoint Web Application being crawled."

Things I have checked:
I have ensured that the default access account has "Full Read" on the web application
-I set up crawl rules for both sources specifying a service account that has admin access to the content on those sites
-I logged in to the SP sites using the service account that the Service Application is using to crawl
-I even created a brand new search service application from scratch and got the exact same results

The only difference between this environment and my test environment, where search works just fine, is that this is the production environment and so it uses FQDN with a host header: http://portal.company.org.

SharePoint 2010 Search Service Application: "All Content" scope contains 0 items?

I've encountered a nasty bug in our setup. Our Search Service Application manages to crawl all content just fine. However, the scopes don't work. We've got a total of 570 items currently in our crawl database. 350 of these are of class 'People', and appear in the 'People' scope. The remaining 220 items should appear in 'All Content' as part of the intra (sites, documents etc), however the 'All Content' scope reports 0 items. I've tried the following: -Creating custom scopes (still 0 items) -Recreating the Search Service Application twice -Tried different accounts as the content access account. -Ensuring that the content access accounts do have 'full read policy' -Checked the crawl log for successful content (such as sites and documents). However, despite my efforts I still get 0 items for 'All Content'.  Has anyone else encountered this problem, or do you have any recommendation for us? Currently I don't see any other option than to reinstall everything.

problem rename sharepoint 2010 search service application admin database

Hi all, i have a problem that hopefully someone has an answer to.  i am not too familiar with sharepoint so please excuse my ignorance. we have sharepoint 2010 on a windows 2008r2 server.  everything seems to work fine.  but as you know, the default database names are horrendous.  i have managed to rename all of them, except for the "search service application" admin database. the default is: Search_Service_Application_DB_<guid> the other 2 databases (crawl and property) were renamed without a problem. we are following the article from technet on how to rename the search service admin db (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-nz/library/ff851878%28en-us%29.aspx).  it says to enter the following command: $searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication -DatabaseName "new database name" -DatabaseServer "dbserver" however, i get an error about identity being null.  no big deal, i add the -Identity switch and the name of my search service application.  but the real problem comes the error it throws:   Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication : The requested database move was aborted as the associated search application is not paused. At line:1 char:54 + $searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication <<<<  -Identity "Search Service Application" -DatabaseName "ShareP

Search Service Application missing in SharePoint 2010

I installed SharePoint 2010 (Enterprise edition), enabled Enterprise features but it is missing Search Service Application when I look under Central Administration > Application Management > Manage Service Application.   When I click on New it doesn't even list "Search Service Application".    When I goto Upgrade and Patch Management > Check Product and Patch Installation Status, it tells me that "Microsoft Search Server 2010 Core" was Installed.  Under Manage services of server, "Sharepoint Foundation Search" is started.  Does anyone have an idea why the "Search Service Application" is missing and how can I install it?

The crashed server has been removed from the farm (manage servers, remove server). How can we get rid of the Search Service application? When we try to delete it, the job runs for hours (Processing, please wait.....) but never finishs? Thanks a lot for help Christoph

Access Denied creating a web application in SP Foundation 2010 installed on windows 7 with local acc

I've installed SharePoint foundation over windows 7 with a local account using this guide: http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/blogs/fromthefield/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=112

When I try to create a new web application the ribbon button is disabled. Using the link located in /_admin/createsite.aspx I get an "Access Denied" error message.

I access the SP Administration with the same user used during installation. This user is local admin and member of SQL server roles "securityadmin" and "dbcreator".

Any idea about this error?

Thanks in advance

Search server 2010 setup - error creating search service application

I am running in a very similar siutation as this post:

I am configuring a new Search Server 2010 production environment.

I used the search setup account to run the setup and run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard.

During the first run of the SharePoint configuration wizard (where the farm account and service applications are setup), the process failed because the search service application could not be created.

Errors were encountered during the configuration of the Search Service Application.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: User does not have permissiont to perform this action.

I was under the assumption that the setup account had securityadmin and dbcreator SQL Server roles.  However, this was not the case and I had them added.  My original thought was the setup failed because of this.  After those roles were added, I tried to recreate the search service application and I still get a failure.

I am pretty sure I have followed the prerequisites as prescribed by Microsoft in terms of account setup (

Access denied on "Configure service accounts"

Just installed a standalone, developer's instance of Sharepoint 2010 on my Windows7 workstation per the instructions outlined in the MSDN article:

When I try to click on the Configure service accounts link on Sharepoint Central Administration site, I get an access denied error.  My windows ID is local to the workstation and it has full administrator rights.  My Id is in the Farm Administrator's group plus the BUILTIN\Administrators group.  Why can't I access this link?  Everything else appears to working fine (still testing).

Webservices access denied with service account "NetworkServices"

I have created an asp.net web application on  windows server 2008. I have created a website in IIS 7 with an application pool. The application pool has the identity "NETWORKSERVICE". I have a web reference in my application with a certificate.

When I create a new web application and add the code below and add the web reference, and run the web application from the solution (and not from a website in IIS), the web service works fine. I think the local administrator has permissions and the network service account not. Is this the problem? And is there solution?

public static PartsService MyCompanyPartsService
                if (_partsService != null)
                    return _partsService;

                _partsService = new PartsService();

Access denied in Vista for AttachDatabase in SMO for click once deployed application

I have a C# click once deployed application that uses SQL Server Express.  A database is zipped and downloaded to the client computer and put in a directory.  In the application, there is a button to display mdf files that can be attached.  The SMO method attachdatabase(databasename, string collection of MDF and LDF) are used to attach the database.  When I run this under Vista, I get an access denied error message.

When I try the attach, the user has admin priviledges.  The click once program has a digital signature.

I want the database to be attached by the application.  I do not want to use SSMS.

Custom search queries not logging except to Search Service Application

I have written custom web controls that run specialised search queries under SharePoint Server 2010, using both FullTExtSQL syntax and (more recently) Keyword syntax, using both the object model and the Search web service.

Unlike the OOTB microsoft search webparts, which log to the web analytics section of the individual site collections, my controls only log the queries performed to the Web Analytics section of the Search service application (within Central Administration).

I have looked at the OOTB webparts using relflector, and followed the Federated search process for how the queries get logged, and I can't see any reason why my controls are ignored. (The QUeryInfo object is built and the information logged when the Query is executed, so it should be done when my custom queries are executed.)

Could anyone enlighten me as to what is going on here?
