Async Agents: Actor-Based Programming with the Asynchronous Agents Library

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 01, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

The agent model provides an effective method of hiding latency for efficient parallel execution. The Asynchronous Agents Library (AAL) lets you use this actor-based model with message-passing interfaces, and we'll show you how it works.Mike Chu, Krishnan VaradarajanMSDN Magazine September 2010

Wandering Code: Write Mobile Agents In .NET To Roam And Interact On Your Network

In artificial intelligence, an agent is a logical entity that has some level of autonomy within its environment or host. A mobile agent has the added capability that it can move between hosts. In this article Matt Neely brings mobile agents from the halls of academia to a dev shop near you.

Debugging Tool: Build a Logging and Event Viewing Library to Help Debug Your .NET Framework-based Ap

Building a basic, reusable application framework can make development quicker and easier. This allows you to focus more on the problems at hand and less on the repetitive tasks involved in building any application. In this article, the author presents a framework that provides facilities to access the registry and an extensible framework for logging messages to a console window or the Event Viewer. This reusable framework can be included as a library in your projects, allowing you to display an enhanced, color-coded message log and dynamically change logging levels.

Cutting Edge: Form-based Programming in ASP.NET

One of the most common snags that ASP developers encounter when they first approach ASP.NET is that managed Web applications must be written according to a single-form interface model. Find out how it works.

Detecting mobile device user agents in ASP.NET (Android)

Hi,

Last week Android updated their software (changed the display from 480px to 800px) so all the mobile tweaks we made for our apps are no longer work on Droid Phones.

I would need to identify the User Agent(e.g. Android) and switch style sheets depending. (We don't want to redirect to another page, just switch style sheets).

Anybody know any lightweight solution ?

Thanks in Advance.

(we were using 480px pixels to identify if the user was coming from iPhone or Android and switched stylesheets accordingly.  If I changed it to 800px some desktop monitors and the iPad would see the mobile version and not the desktop version. Not good.)

WCF server-agents infrastructure

Hi,I am implementing a server-agents infrastucture. The server and agents run on different machines. All the agents are identical. I am using WCF services to communicate between them. I have hosted two request-response pattern services on both server and agents so that they can communicate to each other. Server maintains the real time state of the reachability(channel state in WCF) of the agents.There are following requirements:1) When the server starts, it picks the list of agents(endpoints of agent wcf services) and "ping them"(don't want to call a service operation) to discover alive agents.2) When an agent starts(assuming server is already running), it calls a operation on the server wcf service to register itself. Then server "pings" it back to ensure service reachability and then update the agent state from unreachable to connected.3) When an agent goes down, server needs to know the particular agent is not reachable(channel faulted).4) The channels need to be "always alive" as by default WCF faults the channel after 10 mins.So basically, I want a discovery(with a list of endpoints), heartbeat(at regular intervals after initial discovery) mechanism to be implemented in wcf.Can someone give me any helpful pointer/sample code?thanks in advance,Navneet

SharePoint Programming: Replace content in documents of Document Library

HI, I have 100+ word documents in one of the document libraries on our SharePoint portal. Most of these documents contain HYPERLINKS which refer to a totally different SharePoint server. My task is to update all these HYPERLINKS to point to our server instead of external server. Any pointers on how to accomplish this would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance Mahesh B

Async programming help.

I am loosly basing my application on http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/h80ttd5f(v=VS.71).aspx

The code is as follows:

    private delegate List<string> BaseCatalogListFunction(bool designMode, string server, string partner);
. . . . .
      BaseCatalogListFunction actionFunction = new BaseCatalogListFunction(this.GetBaseCatalogs);
      actionFunction.BeginInvoke(DesignerProperties.GetIsInDesignMode(this),
                    MainWindow.Server,
                    (partnerComboBox.SelectedValue as Partner).Name,
                    new AsyncCallback((asyncResult) =>
                                   {
                                     BaseCatalogListFunction function = ((AsyncResult)asyncResult).AsyncDelegate as BaseCatalogListFunction;
                                     List<string> list = function.EndInvoke(asyncResult);
                                     baseCatalogComboBox.Dispatcher.Invoke(new Action(() => {
                                       baseCatalogComboBox.DataContext = list;
                                       baseCatalogComboBox.SelectedIndex = 0;
                                       baseCatalogComboBox.Visibility = Visibility.Visible;
                                     }));

Update datagrid and Event-Based Async calls

I’m using a datagrid (actually Infragistics XamGrid) which is bound to a custom list of business objects.  In the old WPF days, when completing the edit of a grid row, the business object’s EndEdit() method would be called via databinding.  The EndEdit() method would then save the data to the db via a web service call.  The retuning result of the web service call would tell the business object (in the EndEdit() method) of the call succeeded or failed.  If it failed, it would roll back the changes and raise an event to alert the UI.

In the world of Silverlight and Event-Based Async calls, it’s not possible to do all of this from in the EndEdit() method.

Also, I’m generating my web services using the SLsvcUtil.exe tool.  Since MS is forcing us to use Async calls, then what is the standard way to update data from a gird row and then roll it back and alert the UI when the call fails?

I found a nice article http://blog.jayway.com/2010/06/10/silverlight-prefer-synchronous-web-service-calls/ about making synchronous web service calls in SL, but the catch is that can’t be on the UI thread which – updating a gird row will be on.

Please relay any advice and resources you can offer!

Thanks!
