Accessing Session State in a User Control

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 01, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net
We have a web site that implements a custom SiteMapProvider using a User Control added in the master page. I need to be able to limit the sitemap nodes added depending on the logged in user, that is, certain users should not see certain sitemap nodes. Currently, the login processing code determines if users are in the certain category or role and then sets a value in session state, for example, Session["UserInRoleXXX"] = "Yes"; I tried changing the code in the user control to check the session state, but I got the following error: NullReferenceException ... Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Can session state be accessed in a user control? If so, how? If not, any suggested solutions? Thanks in advance for any help.

User Control not accessing the value of the properties send to it from the aspx page.

I have a dynamic accordion on a page. Set its datasource to an object of paged data source.The user control is in the accordions content template. When i was writing code the properties were showing but after giving the values of databases as

<uc:UserControl1  runat="server" Property1='<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem,"columname1")%>' Property2='<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem,"columname2")%>'  ></uc:UserControl1>

but the values shows null, these properties are shown as textboxes text property by user control.

MoreOver when I checked the values of database Items.So i made a textbox instead of usercontrol here as

<asp:TextBox ID="txtTest" runat="server" Text='<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem,"Columname1")%>'></asp:TextBox>

It is showing the correct value. And if i pass the value directly it is also showing correctly like

<uc:UserControl1  runat="server" Property1="XYZ")%>' Property2="ABC")%>'  ></uc:UserControl1>

. where I am wrong

the problem is eval is not passing the value to usercont

Accessing User Control that is in a Master Page

I have looked everywhere for how to do this and all I come up with is threads describing how to expose public properties.  I have a USER CONTROL in my  Master page. It is a search box with a text box and a dropdown for search type (last name, account number, etc) and a search button.  When the user clicks the search button, I open a new page that displays the results.  How do I pass the values from the USER CONTROL search fields to the new page?  I would post code, but I have nothing to post yet since I don't know where to start. I have tried exposing the public property of the user control, but I don't know how to retrieve those values on the results page.  Anyone have any sample code on how this is done? Thank you in advance for your help!

Accessing a public property of a nested user control in a master page from a pages' user control

Now, I have a page that uses the master page and on this page I have another user control (ucPageControl), I need to  find a way of setting the value in ucControl2 from ucPageControl. Is this possible at all? Many thanks Ed

programmatically set hyperlink state in code behind of a web user control

I am writing a web user control that is basically a vertical single level menu.  The layout would look like this:

<asp:Table ID="myTable" runat="server">
            <asp:HyperLink>Menu Choice</asp:HyperLink>  /* which would resolve to the following line.
            <a onclick="__doPostBack('theUniqueIdOfTheUserControl','myArguments');">Menu choice</a>
    . . . etc.

However, I am externalizing the layout to an XML file and am building the table content dynamically.  The source view of the ascx actually looks like this:

<asp:Table ID="myTable" runat="server">

In the Page_Load of the code behind, I read and parse the XML file and save all the pertinent data in the viewstate on the first load.  On all loads including postbacks, I create the rows, cells, and hyperlinks from the viewstate so I don't have to parse the XML file on every postback.

The XML file also specifies CssClasse

Accessing the different controls inside a GridView control

how we can access a particular control which resides inside a GridView control. In this article I will show you how you can access different controls inside a GridView control. We will see how we can access a TextBox control, a DropDownList control and a ListBox control. Choosing Between a User Control or Web Part for SharePoint

SharePoint will only display Web Parts on a page. However, there are publicly available shims that allow you to write user controls and have them be displayed as a Web Part. From SharePoint's point of view, the shim is a Web Part. From the point of view of the user control, the shim is simply a control in .NET that is including the user control

I am having problems with a user control. I want my solution to have a separate project for holding my user controls.

Multiple Instances of User Control

I have a user control that I place on a page severl times.  When I make a selection on a ddl in one one control the SelectedIndexChanged event fires for all the control on the page for that ddl.  So I get duplication of an insert that I do.  Is there a way to make sure these events are isolated so this doesn't happen.

SQL Server Session state problem.

Hi to all,

I have some things that I want to know. I am right now using a free asp.net webhosting ("somee.com"). The problem is that when I am visiting a page, there's a tendency that values stored in my session variables are lost. Therefore, it causes an error when the requested page is loaded.

1. I am thinking of using sessionState mode="SqlServer". Will it solve my problem?

Actualy Im working on it but Im having problems when connecting to the sql database.

2.  Is that a problem in the webhost?

3. Do free webhosting sites provide allow session state in the sql server?. Because ive tried it locally into my computer and error say's i should intall the ASP.NET Session State SQL Server version 2.0 or above.

Custom Server Control Property not maintaining state

I have created a server control consisting of a TextArea and a div under it.  My goal is to create my own asp:TextArea type control.  the div is for a Character count of the text area and seems to work ok but i added a CharacterCountVisible property to the control that is always returning true.  See Proptery definition below

<Bindable(False), Category("Appearance"), DefaultValue("True"), Localizable(True)> Property CharacterCountVisible() As Boolean
        Return _CountBoxVisible
    End Get
    Set(ByVal value As Boolean)
        _CountBoxVisible = value
    End Set
End Property

Note the _CountBoxVisible variable is define inside the class as :

Dim _CountBoxVisible as Boolean = True

What I am trying to do is give the user/coder the option to show/utilize the char count feature.  Can make it disappear with textarea1.CharacterCountVisible = False but setting it to true will not make it display.

What am i missing

Persist data in a dynamically populated ListBox in a user control

Hi All,

I am trying to persist data in a dynamically populated ListBox in a user control. Here are the details

I have a user control which contains a a listBox and button. On Page_Load of user control I am populating the ListBox control with some values. On Click of button, I am trying to fetch the values which I have selected in ListBox. Though this seems very simple and straight forward I am unable to fetch values.

My Page_Load Function

void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)

My Click Function

Protected Void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

       string strValue = listBox.SelectedValue

I have placed brake point at Page_Load and on click function, I am seeing that the moment the breakpoin

Category attribute of user control property does not work correctly in categories tab.

I have a User Control (ascx) and a property which a want to display in my categories tab in Visual Studio in the category named "Styles".

[Category("Styles"), DefaultValue(""), Description("The value for formating something.")]
public String MyFormatProperty
set { /* the code for set */; }
get { /* the code for get */; }

And here is the problem: Actually I do not need a get, because I only have to set the property (write only property). But when I omit the get, the property is displayed in the "Misc" category in the categories tab in Visual Studio. Only when I code the get as well, then the property is displayed correctly in the "Styles" category in the categories tab in Visual Studio.

Does anybody know why? How can I display the category correctly only with set?

Thanks, S.

OnItemCommand not firing in Templated User Control

I have a templated user control with single instance template attribute. It works great for everything except the following scenario:

"Type ASP.x is not defined" error for dynamic user control when publishing updateable

I have a user control (ContainerCtrl) which programmatically instantiates another user control (SimpleCtrl) in OnLoad. It builds and runs fine, but when I publish it I get the error "error BC30002: Type 'ASP.SimpleCtrl' is not defined." (If I publish without the "updateable" option there's no error, but I need the site to be updateable.)

I assume this has to do with the particulars of how the assembly(ies) are built for the different compiler options. My question is, how can I get it to work properly for "updateable" publishing?

The code follows (web.config is the default from Visual Studio).
