Adding a second node to a SQL 2005 Windows 2003 cluster - NewbieQ

Hi,

I've been asked to replace the hardware for one of our SQL 2005 cluster nodes because of it's age etc etc..  I have evicted the node from the cluster and added in the new one but now have to add the SQL component to it.  I'm not familiar with this bit!  I have found this guide on Technet

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191545(v=SQL.90).aspx

Which seems to be exactly what I need but I have a few questions;

1.  Do I install SQL 2005 on the new node and then perform the steps in the guide above or will it be installed as part of the process following the steps above?

2. Will the current active node go offline or anything like that during the installation?

3. Do I run the setup from the new node or the current active node?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm new the clustering side of things and dont want to mess this bit up

Thanks in advance

Brian

Installation problem with SQL 2005 on Windows 2008 R2 x64 Failover Cluster

Hi

I have built a Windows 2008 R2 x64 Failover Cluster and I need to install SQL 2005 Enterprise x64.

The SQL installation passes all checks and then fails as soon as it attempts to do the installation.

The error message in the Core(Local) log file is:

SQL 2005/2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster - Service only starts when account is local admin

I have a single node Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster configured with SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition installed as a clustered instance.

I am having an issue where the SQL Server service will only start using TCP/IP when the service account is a member of the local admins group. To get SQL to install I had to add the sql server service account to the local admins group.

I have configured group policy with the permissions required for SQL Server 2008 and this is correctly applied to the node.

Errorlog shows the following...

SQL 2005 in a Windows 2008 cluster: Problem getting SQL to start

hello,

I have windows 2008 cluster that was running sql 2005. We suffered a crash, lost the cluster disks, and had to restore them. We have the cluster back up and running but the SQL application in the cluster Services and Applications list is not longer available (or even in the list). I can't uninstall SQL and reinstall it, so I am at a loss as to what to do.

Is there anyway to recreate the SQL application in the cluster? or can I configure the clustered instance to be a standalone so I can uninstall?

Thanks for any help!

SQLServer 2008 Tools and SQL 2005 Cluster

I recently built a SQL Server 2005 cluster on the o/s Windows Server 2008 R2.  I have been attempting to connect to the cluster from my Windows 7 dekstop with my SQL Server 2008 Tool set.  I have been unable to attach to this cluster since its creation. The firewall is temp off, remote connections in the surface area configuration is set to pipes and tcp/ip and the Browser surface is up and running. I ran Wireshark against the cluster and I could see that there was UDP conversations for ms-sql-m (SQL Port) but that was as far as it would get.  I am using a named instance so not using 1433, but I do see the cluster offering up high RPC ports but the client never responds after the initial UDP response. When I noticed that there was a two way conversation taking place, I went to a seperate machine and fired up SQL Server 2005 Tools and I was easily able to attach to the cluster.  So my question is - Are there any known incompatibilities between SQL Server 2005 cluster services and SQL Server 2008 Tool set?  I can use my 2008 tools to attach to a non-clustered SQL Server 2005 w/o issue.   Error when attempting to connect: A network-related or instance-specific error occured while establishing a connection to sql server.  The server was not found or was not accessible.  Verify that the instance name is correct and the SQL Server is con

SQL Server 2005 - Installation in Cluster Environment - "Service SQL Server Browser (SQLBrowser) fai

Trying to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition (32-bit) as a clustered application. Installation proceeds fine until it begins to install the SQL Server Database Services product. Status window says "Starting Services. Service: SQL Server Browser". Error message is presented: "Service 'SQL Server Browser' (SQLBrowser) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services". SQL Server Service Account is in the Administrators group on both local systems, and is a domain account. Account used for the installation is in the Administrators group on both local systems, and is a domain account. Have cancelled out of the install and rebooted both servers numerous times. Exact same error continues to occur. Cluster is active and all resources are owned by node #1 - the node where SQL Server Installation is being run. In the event viewer, I see: Event ID: 10 Description: The SQLBrowser service was unable to establish SQL instance and connectivity discovery". I am also seeing errors like: Source: SQLBrowser. Reinstalled SQL 2005 on cluster won't start.

OS: Windows Server 2003 32-bit. Cluster: 2-node Active/Passive We're working on upgrading from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008, and we're using this cluster to test the cluster upgrade/install procedures. So, updated the existing SQL 2005 instance to SQL 2008. This went fine. Added an additional SQL 2008 instance. This went fine. Uninstalled SQL 2008 (both instances) from both nodes. This went fine. Installed SQL 2005 (clustered setup). At the end of the install process, received a message about unable to do (something). However, the install reported successful. Windows 2008 R2/SQL 2008 SP1 CU5 active/active cluster keeps failing

I have set up many of the same clusters in the last few months, but this cluster specifically has been having lots of problems lately.  OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 latest patches SQL: SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU5 (version: 10.0.2746) Disks: VMAX SAN In the very beginning when I set up the cluster, the cluster validation kept failing when I tried to add a node.  Turned out that we had to unjoin the servers from the domain and rejoin.  Right after that the cluster validation succeeded, the second node joined the cluster, and quorum was changed to "Node and Disk Majority".  SQL was installed and set up as active/active (one sql instance on each node).  No issues then until SQL server was actually in use.  Symptoms: SQL server has heavy ETL processing plus being a subscriber of a sql replication.  The following errors first started on 4/24 when I set up sql replication (these servers are replication subscribers): EventID: 1127, Source: FailoverCluster, Task Category: Network Manager Cluster network interface 'man1fscl01a - Hartbeat to man1fscl91b' for cluster node 'man1fscl01a' on network 'ClusterHeartBeat' failed.
