In this article we can go through the steps of installing SharePoint 2013 on a virtual machine. The entire operation is going to take from few hours to a day.

For overview & pre-requisites information you can check this link.

Following are the steps in this article:

1. Download Virtual Machine Player

2. Install Virtual Machine Player

3. Run Player

4. Install Operating System

5. Create Virtual Machine

6. Play with Virtual Machine

7. Configure Server

8. Install SQL Server 2012

9. Install SharePoint 2013

10. Create Web Application

11. Create Site Collection

12. Test SharePoint Site

VMware Player

I choose VMware Player as it is Free for personal use & have great features.

Step 1: Download

You can download it from the following link:

Scroll down in the page & choose the Download option from Free for Personal Use section.

You will be taken to the following page. Choose Download from Windows section.

It will be a 100 MB download.

Step 2: Installation

After download is completed run the Installer.

Before running VMware Player you might need to enable Virtualization in BIOS.

Step 3: Run VMWare Player

You can run VMware Player from the start menu.

You will get the following screen:

Step 4: Install Operating System

Please note that you need to get an Operating System disk or ISO image file for creating virtual machine. I prefer you use Windows Server 2012 operating system. A trial is available from link below.

Get the trial product key as well.

Step 5: Create Virtual Machine

From VMware Player, click on the Create a New Virtual Machine link to start creating your virtual machine. Choose the ISO file location you downloaded.

Click the Next button & in the appearing page enter the Product Key obtained, choose the Windows Server 2012 Standard option.

Enter a strong password to continue.

Click the Next button to continue. In the appearing page enter the name for VM & choose location.
The Virtual Machine created contains files in GB size & hence a separate drive other than operating system drive is preferred.

In the next page choose the VM size. Considering the size growth, I foresee the operating system requires 20 GB, SharePoint and Development Environment requires 20 GB & a free space of 10 GB, so choosing 50 GB.

(If you have more hard-disk capacity, I would even recommend using 60-80GB space)

Click the Finish button to start the installation.

You will be seeing the Operating System Installation as shown below.

You will be getting some optional dialog boxes, Choose appropriately to continue.

I waited for around 10 minutes & the Installation is completed. Hurrah! The machine is ready.

You will be having delegated Display, Network driver usage, so no worries of driver-overheads.

Step 6: Play with Virtual Machine

You can take some time to play with the VM, send key strokes, open browser, file explorer etc. The Windows Button is used to get the Start Menu

For sending Ctrl + Alt + Delete key combinations, you can use the Player Menu.

Now we are ready with the Operating System. In further steps we can install:

1. SQL Server 2012

2. SharePoint 2013

You can choose Explorer > Network > Host Machine > Shared Folders to copy file between your hosting & virtual machine.

Step 7: Configure Server

Change the Name of your Server using >My Computer > Properties.

Choose Server Manager > Add Roles & features for the server > Add Active Directory Users & Computers role >

Choose Server Manager > Promote Server as a Domain Controller.

You might need to restart your VM after this step.

Step 8: Install SQL Server 2012

As you know SQL Server is the heart of SharePoint as all the contents are stored here. You can download SQL Server 2012 evaluation from here:

Choose the Installation > New SQL Server stand-alone installation option

You can turn off the Firewall before installation.

You can choose all components of SQL Server

Click the Next button & note down the Instance name of SQL server.

Step 9: Install SharePoint 2013

Once SQL Server is ready we are good to go with SharePoint 2013.

You can download SharePoint Server 2013 Trial from the link below:

Extract the ISO file & run the pre requisites installer first, then setup executable.

After installation, run the Products and Configuration wizard.

Choose the option Create a new farm & click next to continue.

When prompted for SQL Server name, enter Machine Name and continue.

Step 10: Create Web Application

You will be getting Central Administration after Installation. Choose Manage Web Applications & Click on New button to create a new web application.

Step 11: Create Site Collection

Choose Central Administration > Application Management > Create site collections to create a Site Collection inside the newly created web application.

Step 12: Test SharePoint Site

Here you are ready with your SharePoint 2013 Site within Virtual Machine. J

After usage you can choose Exit menu of the Player & Power Off.

You can even access the Virtual Machine web site from your Hosting Machine. Below is the screen shot from my hosting machine which runs SharePoint 2010 & virtual machine which runs SharePoint 2013.

Increasing VM RAM size can induce better performance. I recommend a 4GB RAM for the SharePoint Virtual Machine. You can change it from VM Player > Right click on VM Name > Settings

For powering-off the VM, you can choose Player > Exit menu.

For installing a new browser in VM, you need to change Browser Security Settings to custom to enable disabled features.

It is recommended that you promote the VM to Domain Controller. You can do this from Server Manager > Tools > Add Roles and Features > Active Directory.

You can Copy + Paste between host computer & virtual machine.

In this article we have explored how to install SharePoint 2013 on a virtual machine.v
