How would you retrieve large number of items from the list?

To Retrieve a large number of items with better performance use SPQuery

Using(SPSite  Osite=new SPSite(SPContext.Current.Site.Url))

{

     Using (SPWeb  Oweb=Osite.OpenWeb())

    {

             SPList OList=Oweb.Lists.TryGetList("Mylist");

             SPQuery  SPqur=new SPQuery();

             Spqur.Query="<Where>><Eq><FieldRef Name='DeptName'/><Value Type='Text'>IT</Value></Eq></Where>";

         Spqur.RowLimit=100;

      SPListIltemCollection CurrntItems= OList.GetIltems(Spqur);

      Foreach(SPListItems Oitem in CurrntItems)

       {

         String  Result= Oitem["Title"].Tostring();

       }

    }

}
