Different Windows Phone 8 Templates in Visual Studio 2012

In this article we are going to see the different Windows Phone 8 Templates that are available in Visual Studio 2012 for application development. Visual Studio 2012 IDE supports application development for different mediums and platforms
 


Introduction:


In this article we are going to see the different Windows Phone 8 Templates that are available in Visual Studio 2012 for application development. Visual Studio 2012 IDE supports application development for different mediums and platforms, for Windows phone application development we need to install certain Software Development Kit which is covered in our first article of this series. Windows Phone 8 SDK comes with a new features and enhancements which enforces to have many templates in place and to the notice it has support to develop HTML5 based application as well.


Templates at a Glance:


Let us quick start and see what are the new and the old templates that are available in the Visual Studio 2012 IDE for Windows Phone 8 application development. To start with first open Visual Studio 2012 IDE in administrator mode and click on File from the menu and select New Project to see the list of templates as shown in the screen below.




Now select your preferred programming language, here we will select Visual C# and we can see an items called Windows Phone and XNA Game Studio 4.0 available along with a few list of items. If for instance the Windows Phone SDK is not installed then these 2 items will be missing from the item list. Windows Phone item is used to develop Windows Phone Applications and XNA Game Studio is used to develop XNA Games for the windows phone. Here let us target with Windows Phone and Select Windows Phone item and we can see a list of available templates as shown in the screen below.




Here we can see 11 different templates that is available for the Windows Phone application development from which we can use it across as per the requirement. Let us see the templates and its usage.

Template to create Class Library for background agent to play audio

Template to create Class Library for background agent to stream audio

Template to create Class Library for background agent to perform a periodic or resource intensive task


While designing the application we need to decide with which template we need to proceed with the development as selecting the template plays a major role in reducing the development task considerably and at the same time selecting wrong template will really end up in rework.
