Is Javascript validation effective ?

Are javascript validation routines effective at reducing the mumber of errors that are made in data input into HTML forms ? I

s there major flaws with javascript as a whole e.g. the simplicty of the language ?

And is there advantages to the language ?

javascript is client side. So we can avoid the round trip to server.
