Can SharePoint be linked to a SQL database?

Please tell me whether sharepoint be linked to a sql database

yes we can link sharepoint with SQL database, as same procedure for dotnet project,
Add conncetion string in web.config and get connection with sql database.
objdata.connectionstring = @"server=SQLservername;database=CustomDB;uid=sa;password=sa;";
objdata.Cmd.CommandText = "createfunction
objdata.Cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
